Fall Festivities

As the season of fall approaches, leaves reveal their true colors, nights become cooler, and the time is ripe for spending time with your family. From orchards to pumpkin patches and nature trails to hay rides, the many fall activities provide the perfect opportunity to plan that family outing. Not sure what to do? Do a little research and load the minivan.

If time is an issue, find events or places close to home. Since the weather is usually favorable to outdoor activities, drag your kids from the computer and TV and travel to a local orchard or farmer's market. Such places usually have family-oriented activities and even kids' carnivals. Weekend fall festivals are also major activities of the season and are very enjoyable. Pay attention to the newspaper for special dates concerning these events.  College football game anyone?

Wanting to travel a little farther than usual? Try a park and hike on trails to enjoy the colors of fall. Kids may groan at the thought of physical exercise, but taking a leisurely stroll isn't too taxing. A picnic is the perfect reward for a trail mastered or a much-need break mid-hike. Finding that perfect spot may take some travel time, but quality time with the family is always worth the miles.

Whether surprising the family with an outing or planning one in advance, simply making the effort and taking time to enjoy the season with your family are very worthwhile investments.

Making time for your Kids

Average: 4.5 (4 votes)

Developing a strategy for becoming a better dad can sound like a big joke. To use the term “busy dad” in the current world is really an understatement. A lot of us dads have a difficult time trying to balance our professional or personal demands against spending valuable time with the wife and kids too. Just because your schedule is tight should not mean that you are destined to fail as a parent.

Most Dads feel obligated to give our kids as much fun as possible every time we take them for long road trips. The point is to keep them fully occupied hopefully guaranteeing us smooth rides without all the whining and crying...and hopefully keeping our sanity as well.  Here are some fun activities and games to consider playing on long (or short) car trips:

Children's Books Recommendations for Story Time

Average: 5 (2 votes)

Looking for a good book to read to your child? I have my master list of books that are can't miss choices on the first go around...and many subsequent re-reads. These books will not only be big hits with your child, but they’ll also be interesting enough to entertain you as well. After two years of children’s stories, I can assure you your child isn’t the only one that can be brought to tears with the wrong story time choice; too much of a bad read can bring a parent to the brink as well.
