Home Made Oak Threshold
I’ve been hunting through every hardware store around trying to find just the right transition threshold to go between my hardwood floors and the kitchen tile. This should be an easy purchase and install, but with the opening over 7 feet wide, most of the little three foot long pre-made thresholds just won’t work. So I made my own. Here’s how…
I bought two 8 foot long stock pieces of oak trim. One was an “L” shaped outside corner, and the other was a standard shoe molding. My plan was to join the two parts together to form the transition from the living room into the kitchen.
STEP #1 – I took the outside corner trim and (after careful measuring) ran it through my table saw to cut down one side of the “L” roughly in half. This was probably the hardest part because the trim was not very wide and getting it fed through the saw was tricky. I ended up clamping it backwards against a 2x4 and then ran the whole thing against the fence and through the blade.
STEP #2 – With both pieces cut to length, I first installed the recently ripped corner trim with the long leg of the “L” covering the tile and the short leg cornering over and down to the hardwood floor. I then installed the shoe molding up against the short leg of the corner trim and nailed it into place.
Now I had a custom made transition for my 7 foot opening into the kitchen. I took these pictures with my cell phone so apologies for the poor lighting. By the way – if you are ever going to be installing ANY trim… crown molding; baseboards; quarter round; cabinet kick plates; etc… you really must beg, borrow, or buy a nail gun. Mine is a small pneumatic one that I run off my air compressor. OMG – installing this stuff is so easy. I used to fight with those stupid little finishing nails, cursing and screaming about whoever invented trim. Now it’s just ”pop-pop” and I’m all done.
Remember, if you can’t find what you’re looking for maybe it would be easier to just make it yourself.
