Sparking Up The New Year

Today it seems like 24 hours is just too short for one day - and forget getting your work done in just 8 hours.  That does not include traffic; travel; shopping; taking care of the kids; mowing the yard; making meals; and taking out the trash.  No matter how busy we get, there’s no excuse for compromising or giving up our role as fathers and husbands.  Speaking about taking out the trash, when’s the last time you took your wife for a special night out?

Over the years of being together, our romantic flames can sometimes need to be refueled.  Also, once we have kids to deal with, we sometimes ignore our jobs as husbands and end up playing the Daddy roles. As much as we love spending time with our kids, we need not take our wives for granted. While a lot of us may not realize it, there are actually very simple ways to keep the flames of love alive.  New Years would be a good chance to impress our wives. So let’s kick-start the year with a surprise evening that is bound to put a smile on her face.  Here are a couple of suggestions to give your wife a New Year’s happy beginning.

DINNER FOR TWO - Yes, I know it seems cliché.  This always comes out in dating websites and advice blogs.  But believe me when I say that this never gets old if you just put her desires (quality time) ahead of yours (stuffing your face)!  Remember to pick a quiet restaurant with a non-traditional menu… something you don’t eat all the time.  Experiment and expand your palate.  Plus don’t forget just a little candlelight and wine too.  It’s always a good idea to celebrate the coming of the New Year with a little intimacy – and include your wife, ok?  Also - dinner could be over and done well before midnight so you would be able to make it home and have the countdown with your whole family.

FireworksMAKE HER SEE FIREWORKS – Wouldn’t it be great to see your wife’s eyes sparkle and light up just like when you were dating?  I know I would.  Taking her out to see a magnificent fireworks show is a sure fire way to impress your wife.  It would easily make them think how lucky they are to have married such a romantic husband like us.  Which we really are of course!

GIVE HER THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL - While some of us don’t have materialistic wives, it’s still not a bad idea to give her something special for New Year’s.  While most gifts are traditionally reserved for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas - a special gift on New Year’s Day is bound to surprise her because it’s unexpected.  It doesn’t have to be pricey or extravagant.  Simple jewelry or something you know that she really wants or needs will do just fine.  But make it unusual…no pots or pans, and for God’s sake do not give her a vacuum cleaner or you’re going to be the one seeing stars and fireworks... from the dog house!

NEW YEAR RESOLUTION GIFT - Oftentimes, we work so hard and go home tired that we think only of ourselves and forget that our wives work just as hard.  They have an additional work too, as they look after the kids as well as their husbands.  So it may be a good idea to tell her that you plan to help her out more this year.  Make a promise to take turns with the dishes, help out with the laundry or clean up the house once in a while. Give her the gift of time and good deeds.  Don’t just say it of course. Do it!

Making time for your Kids

Average: 4.5 (4 votes)

Developing a strategy for becoming a better dad can sound like a big joke. To use the term “busy dad” in the current world is really an understatement. A lot of us dads have a difficult time trying to balance our professional or personal demands against spending valuable time with the wife and kids too. Just because your schedule is tight should not mean that you are destined to fail as a parent.

Blue Ribbons and Good Times

Shiny blue ribbons, mooing cows, and sweaty summer days seem to epitomize 4-H for many. 4-Hers haul their animals off the family farm and drag them to the county fair where the animals are spiffed up and shown for bragging rights… right? Well, 4-H entails much more; it requires hard work and dedication and provides a time for kids and their parents to work together towards a common goal, whether that is first place for a pig or grand champion on a poster. For a busy dad, 4-H may seem daunting. Surprisingly, it’s not only manageable but truly rewarding.

Graduation Gift Giving

April showers bring May flowers, but there will be more than flowers popping up in May. A pile of graduation invitations will grow faster than the daffodils in your backyard. They flood mailboxes and might include snapshots of that niece, cousin, or distant relative. As this young person innocently smiles up at you, you might nostalgically reflect on how quickly time passes or might be wondering who on earth this person is. In either case, a dark cloud will begin to threaten your blue skies in the form of a graduation gift.
