Wedding Anniversary Gifts

Guys - Wedding anniversaries are special occasions, but only if you make them special.  Woe unto the hapless husband who forgets to recognize their wife on this one day a year.  Luckily I have never forgotten our anniversary, although I did forget my wife’s birthday once…but that tragedy is another story.  Speaking of stories let me tell you about what I did to make our 10th anniversary just a little extra spicy and special...

island beachWhen my wife and I got married we were both living in Arizona but our families were all back in Michigan.  We had to plan a long distance wedding, and because my wife was still in college we could not afford to take the time (or spend the money) for an official honeymoon.  So like a lot of young people, we had to wait.  Well that wait literally ended up lasting 10 years.  For our 10th anniversary we took a honeymoon trip to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.  We even booked a condo for the special Honeymoon Package!

But that wasn’t the “special” part.  Yes it was fun, exciting, and adventurous.  Plus we had left our kids with my parents so we were also free of parental obligations too.  To make it memorable for my wife, I snuck 10 different gifts into my luggage for the trip.  Then every day for the entire week-and-a-half I would surprise her with a gift to mark each year of our marriage.  And every day her excitement grew and the anticipation of what was coming (and when) was a thrill too.

Some days she would find a carefully wrapped package on her pillow when she woke up, and other days a waiter would magically serve it as part of our meal.  I gave her perfume on the beach one day… jewelry on a sunset cruise… a lacy Victoria’s Secret negligee on her pillow…a unique exotic desert served on the balcony.  I was having a blast just seeing her excited and wide-eyed every day.

bald guyOne evening I told her that I had an extra-special gift for her that night.  I had arranged for a strange man to spend the night with her and I needed to go pick him up.  Needless to say she was shocked and adamant that “this just isn’t gonna happen bubba!”  So off I went to a local barber shop I had seen earlier.  I had them totally shave my head… down to nothing!  Back at the condo I announced myself and said “here’s your strange man for the night”.  She definitely agreed that they didn’t come any stranger than me.  Now that was a memorable night.  However I failed to think ahead about this act of bravado and eventually suffered a terrible sun burn all over my head.  What was I thinking…shaving my head in St. Thomas?

gift pearlsThe point I’m trying to make for all you guys is to give it just a little effort and forethought.  You can make your wife happy and your marriage full of life.  I know sometimes it seems like you cannot think of a single gift to give her.  Either you have no ideas or no money…bit it doesn’t matter.  It’s not the gift that counts but the giving.  The real gift is that you cared enough to make the effort to be a better father, husband, or partner.

P.S. – The head-shaving episode was a gift that kept giving.  The week after we came home from St. Thomas, we had to have family pictures taken for the church directory.  For years afterwards, there I was with a shining bright red head!

Make it a New Year's Date

GlassesToday it seems like 24 hours is just too short for one day - and forget getting your work done in just 8 hours. That does not include traffic; travel; shopping; taking care of the kids; mowing the yard; making meals; and taking out the trash. No matter how busy we get, there’s no excuse for compromising or giving up our role as fathers and husbands. Speaking about taking out the trash, when’s the last time you took your wife for a special New Year's night out?

Graduation Gift Giving

April showers bring May flowers, but there will be more than flowers popping up in May. A pile of graduation invitations will grow faster than the daffodils in your backyard. They flood mailboxes and might include snapshots of that niece, cousin, or distant relative. As this young person innocently smiles up at you, you might nostalgically reflect on how quickly time passes or might be wondering who on earth this person is. In either case, a dark cloud will begin to threaten your blue skies in the form of a graduation gift.

Baby Gift Suggestions - My "Go To" List

Average: 4.8 (4 votes)

Two years ago I’d never changed a diaper, I’d never fed a baby, and I’d certainly never been publicly humiliated by a two-year-old on a consistent basis. But, oh, how times have changed. Routine baby duties are now second nature. I’ve learned the magical powers of prunes. And I’ve been embarrassed in public so many times that our son is going to have to truly step up his game if he wants me to ever utter “Uncle!” again. Two years with a newborn-turned-toddler has also provided me with some valuable insight into what works and what doesn’t when it comes to baby gifts. And with that in mind, here’s my can’t miss list of “Go To Gifts” for a friend who is about to enter the world of parenthood: If you have $15 to spend...
