1967 Topps Tom Seaver Rookie Card: The Ultimate Collector’s Guide

The Topps set from 1967 The rookie card of Tom Seaver from the 1960s is one of the most iconic and sought-after cards of all time. As a result of the card’s dual-panel design, Seaver had to split his rookie card with teammate Bill Denehy, yet collectors continue to adore this card. Despite the fact that he would go down in baseball history as one of the most feared pitchers of all time, the young Seaver did not appear to be very terrifying. This is a piece that I’ve had the privilege to acquire and sell a few times over the years, and it’s always been one of my personal favorites.

More.

Key Facts

Distinction: This is the only mainstream rookie card of Tom Seaver that has been identified. There was, however, another Seaver card created in 1967 as part of the New York Mets team issue postcard collection, which was available for purchase separately (picture farther down in this article). However, it is his 1967 Topps card that collectors are most interested in, and it, along with theRod Carew rookie card, is considered to be a crucial card in the entire collection. Card 581 of a deck of 609 cards has the number 581 on it.

  1. Cards with a high number of digits in any set were often printed in smaller quantities, making them more difficult to come by than other cards.
  2. In this particular instance, Seaver is shown with teammate Bill Denehy, who did not have nearly as successful a professional career as Seaver.
  3. His name and position are shown on a black backdrop underneath his photograph, with his image in the center.
  4. Overall, it’s a rather easy design that results in a fantastic-looking rookie card of one of baseball’s all-time great pitchers.
  5. His Minor League statistics are also included, despite the fact that he only spent one season in the Minors.
  6. Problems with the condition: Usually, the most difficult condition hurdles you’ll encounter with this card are those relating to centering.

This is a typical problem that occurs across the whole 1967 Topps collection. Furthermore, the green borders on the reverse side of the card can easily become worn and chipped over time.

Tom Seaver Rookie Card Value

The first question that most people have is: how much is a Tom Seaver rookie card really worth? It is, in fact, one of the most costly playing cards produced during the 1960s. It ranks with the Rod Carew rookie as one of the most important rookies in the 1967 Topps set, as well as one of the set’s most costly cards. Unless you can discover one in PSA 9 Mint condition, you’re looking at a four-figure price tag from the Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA). PSA is widely regarded as the gold standard in the vintage card market, and as a result, collectors place high value on their graded cards.

PSA 8 NM-MT: $2,000 (plus applicable taxes).

1967 Mets Team Issue Postcards

As previously noted, Seaver was also included in the 1967 Mets team issue postcards series, which was released by the team. Despite the fact that it was also issued in 1967, it is not recognized to be an authentic “mainstream” rookie card by the collecting community. But I still believe it’s a pretty good card since it displays Seaver beginning his windup in full color photography, which I think is really nice.

Tom Seaver’s Legacy

Tom Seaver will go down in baseball history as one of the greatest pitchers the game has ever seen. The man could toss the ball with authority and instill terror in the hearts of opposing hitters. As “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise,” he is one of only three Mets to have his uniform retired by the team, the other two being Gil Hodges and Mike Piazza. He is also known as “The Franchise” by his teammates. His list of accomplishments is lengthy and impressive:

  • In his professional baseball career, he has 311 wins, 3,640 strikeouts, and a 2.86 lifetime ERA. He has been selected to twelve All-Star games and has won three National League Cy Young honors. He has won one World Series championship.

10 Terrific Tom Seaver Baseball Cards

When the Hall of Fame revealed that Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver had died as a result of complications with Lewy body dementia and COVID-19, baseball mourned the loss of a legendary figure. Seaver’s professional career began in the 1960s and continued to flourish until the 1980s. His rookie season in 1967 had been a highlight, but his entire career had looked like a never-ending highlight reel for “Tom Terrific.” In 1968, he became the first Mets pitcher to strike out over 200 batters in a season for the first of nine consecutive seasons, and he led the Miracle Mets to a World Series championship in 1969.

  1. He pitched a no-hitter and went on to win 311 games in his career.
  2. What are those baseballs, Ron?
  3. pic.twitter.com/NMTjDBa8CT — SNY (@SNYtv) on Twitter The date is September 3, 2020.
  4. In addition, he had a terrific sense of humour.
  5. Many athletes attempted to deceive the photographer by posing in “the incorrect manner.” I’m not aware of any other than Seaver, who attempted it the first time he sat for a photograph.
  6. Check out some of his most essential baseball cards from some of his most memorable seasons in the following gallery.
  7. 1.Topps Rookie Card from 1967 Sharing the card with future announcer Bill Denehy, Seaver had joined the Mets after just one minor league season, and he had been a disappointment.

One of the reasons Seaver’s rookie card is among the most expensive of all time is that it is from the last series, making it extremely hard to come by.

After two seasons of mediocrity, the Mets shocked the baseball world, and Seaver was a major factor in that surprising victory.

This card, number 480 in the collection, is occasionally troubled by scuffing due to the dark backdrop and is frequently off-center, but it is still a fantastic portrait photograph.

It’s safe to say that Seaver was virtually untouchable in 1971, a year he has referred to as his finest of all time.

This is a fantastic vintage card featuring a Hall of Famer at the height of his abilities.

Large numbers of major leaguers and their families sent Topps with photographs of themselves as children, which were subsequently made into a fantastic subset of cards.

5.1974 Topps80Credit for this one goes to the Topps design staff.

It also has one of those classic drawings on the back that says, “Tom adores playing bridge.” Who would have thought it?

Seaver ended first in the National League with 251 strikeouts, 137 more than Ryan.

Both Hall of Famers on the same card, a fantastic attitude from Seaver, and those incredible statistics on the back.this is without a doubt one of the top non-rookie cards of the 1970s.

The Fresno, California native wasn’t a particularly strong hitter, but he was able to control the bat well enough to smash 12 home runs and even five triples throughout his career.

This is his first card as a member of the Red team.

One of his cheapest vintage cards, from one of his most famous seasons, may be yours for a few of dollars if you act quickly.

The debut of Donruss and Fleer transformed the landscape of Seaver’s card appearances, which were previously limited to leader cards.

Another cheapie because to the sheer number of them available and the fact that it is a little silly, but the passage of time has allowed us to appreciate some of the 1980s issues like this one a little bit more than we did previously.

Later in life, he acquired ownership of a vineyard and established a reputation as a producer of fine wine.

Fleer Update for October 19, 1984 In the midst of the frenzy over Puckett and Clemens rookie cards, several of the other jewels from the 1984 Fleer Update box set, which originally went for hundreds of dollars, were overlooked.

He still had a few of good years left in him, and it was with the Red Sox that he reached the milestone of 300 games played.

For the occasion of the number 41, here’s a look at the 41 current’most viewed’ Tom Seaver baseball cards that are now up for auction.

Tom Seaver was voted to the Baseball Hall of Fame with the greatest percentage of votes out of all of the heroes who have been inducted into the organization since its founding in 1939. In addition to demonstrating how widely esteemed he was as a pitcher, his virtually unanimous nomination demonstrates why he was given the nickname “The Franchise.” The finest Tom Seaver cards are just as well-regarded, and this list includes major card appearances from his playing career as well as his post-playing career.

  • With teammate Nolan Ryan, he would go on to become the faces of the New York Mets during their heyday in the late 1960s and early 1970s, culminating in the Miracle Mets team’s World Series victory in 1969.
  • The Topps Company Even though Tom Seaver’s rookie card is one of the most valued from the 1960s, there are several more reasonable options from the same era.
  • As a result of his dominance on the mound, he was featured on several pitching leaders cards in multiple Topps sets, and collectors should keep an eye out for his 1971 Topps National League Strikeout Leaders card, which also features Bob Gibson and Fergie Jenkins.
  • Another outstanding card that didn’t quite reach the top ten is his 1976 ToppsRecord Breaker card, which commemorated his eight consecutive seasons with 200 or more strikeouts.
  • This card, which is technically “not” displaying Tom Seaver, can be found in the 1985 Donruss collection, where a photo of pitcher Floyd Bannister was put on Seaver’s card from the set, resulting in a famous mistake card portraying Tom Seaver.
  • Tracking down the 1992 Pacific Trading Cards collection, which is dedicated completely to Tom Seaver and spans his entire career, will be a highlight for completists.
  • Because he pitched for more than two decades, Tom Seaver cards may be collected by a diverse range of collectors with varying financial means.

10. 1977 Topps Tom Seaver150

Since it was one of the first singles I ever purchased from a card shop as a youngster, I’m a bit biased in favor of Seaver’s 1977 Toppscard, which was one of my personal favorites. Along with this fantastic-looking base card, Seaver also has a Strikeout Leaders card, which he shares with his former teammate Nolan Ryan, which is also a nice addition.

9. 1970 Topps Tom Seaver195

Collectors can obtain this card, which commemorates his victory in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, in addition to his basic card from the 1970 Topps series. Seaver also earned the nickname “Tom Terrific” after winning Game 4 of the World Series in the same year.

8. 1971 Topps Super Tom Seaver53

The “Super” component of these Topps sets refers to their over-sized dimensions, as well as the higher-quality paper and high-gloss photographs that may be used in their production. In 1971 Topps Super, the corners of the cards are rounded, and there are no short-prints, making it a very simple set to complete for the time period in question.

7.1972 Topps Tom Seaver445

Pitchers wearing windbreakers or coats while pitching were a reasonably popular feature in Topps sets from the 1970s, although they aren’t as common today as they were back then. On his 1972 Topps card, Seaver is seen wearing one, with a teammate stretching in the background. He also has an In Action card from the 1972 collection, which depicts him responding to either a terrible call or a fantastic play, depending on the viewer’s point of view.

6. 1975 Topps Tom Seaver370

Another image of Tom Seaver wearing his windbreaker, but this time underneath his jersey, appears in the 1975 Topps set. Along with this brightly colored base card, there is also a miniature variant of this card that was only available in limited quantities in Michigan and the Pacific Northwest.

5. 1974 Topps Tom Seaver80

The 1974 Toppsbase card, which portrays Seaver in the midst of throwing heat, is one of the most gorgeous action images ever captured of the pitcher. The Mets’ first baseman, John Milner, is visible behind Seaver, poised to receive the ball, with a large number of spectators in the stands watching the action.

4. 1999 Upper Deck SP Signature Edition Tom Seaver Autograph

Even though Tom Seaver has signed in a number of high-end sets, it would be inaccurate to refer to him as a “regular signer.” On-card Seaver autographs depicting him as a Met can be found in the 1999 Upper Deck SP Signature Edition, which includes an excellent example of his work. There are autographed cards of Seaver in a Cincinnati Reds uniform on the backs of several Donruss goods from 2005, including Donruss Classics.

3. 1968 Topps Tom Seaver45

The All-Star Rookie Cup is awarded to Seaver by Topps in 1968, which would be a good complement to his 1967 Rookie of the Year Award. His 16-13 record may not appear to be particularly spectacular, but it was actually rather good given the Mets had lost 101 games that season. Putting up a collection of all of the All-Star Rookie Cup appearances on Topps cards throughout the years may be a fun endeavor to undertake. One can almost guarantee that Seaver’s card would be among the most costly in the collection.

2. 1968 Bazooka Tom Seaver

The All-Star Rookie Cup is awarded to Seaver by Topps in 1968, which would be a good complement to his 1967 Rookie of the Year honor. His 16-13 record may not appear to be very spectacular, but it was really fairly good considering the Mets had lost 101 games during that season, according to Baseball Reference.

Putting together a collection of all of the All-Star Rookie Cup appearances on Topps cards over the years may be a fun effort. One of the most valuable cards in the collection would undoubtedly be Seaver’s card.

1. 1967 Topps Tom Seaver, Bill Denehy RC581

Seaver receives an All-Star Rookie Cup from Topps in 1968, which complements his 1967 Rookie of the Year Award. His 16-13 record may not appear to be particularly spectacular, but it was actually rather good given the Mets lost 101 games during that season. Putting together a collection of all of the All-Star Rookie Cup appearances on Topps cards throughout the years may be a fun undertaking. Certainly one of the most valuable cards in the collection would be Seaver’s card.
