In Mickey, an American baseball drama film starring Harry Connick Jr., directed by Hugh Wilson (in what would be his final directorial effort), and written by best-selling author John Grisham, Mickey was released in 2004. During the 2004 season, Mickey was filmed in baseball grounds in Colonial Heights, Richmond, and Petersburg, Virginia, as well as South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, which is the home of baseball’sLittle League World Series (LLWS). In his native state of Mississippi, Grisham participated in Little League.

Grisham and director Wilson are both from the Virginia region, where the most of the filming took place. Until 1994’s Little Giants, Mickey was the only film to be granted authorization to utilize the Little League trademarks, with Mickey becoming only the second.

Plot

Mr. Tripp Spence (Harry Connick, Jr.) is a widower lawyer in Virginia who becomes the subject of an exhaustive Internal Revenue Service inquiry after bogus bankruptcy claims he made during his wife’s terminal illness. In the wake of realizing that his case against the inevitable criminal charges is hopeless, he takes Derrick (Shawn Salinas), his 13-year-old son who enjoys playing Little Leaguebaseball and is entering his final year of eligibility due to age restrictions, and flees from the investigation, moving out west to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Due to Derrick’s new identity, he is one year younger than he was previously, allowing him to continue playing Little League for another year, something both of them look forward to after their spontaneous move forced Derrick to miss his All-Star team’s participation in the official Little League qualifying tournaments for the first time.

  • The Fort Lauderdale narrative is recited by Tripp in order to persuade Tony to allow Mickey to participate in a private tryout session with him (Florida is known as a major “hotzone” for youth baseball).
  • Glen also develops a relationship with Patty, a teacher at Mickey’s school.
  • Mickey’s team continues to advance through the district and regional brackets, garnering widespread media attention as they prepare to compete in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
  • As Glen becomes increasingly concerned that the media attention may eventually reveal their whereabouts to the IRS, he attempts to persuade Mickey to stop playing, but Mickey refuses to back down, claiming that they were aware of the hazards from the outset.
  • An LLWS official receives information about ineligible players on both the Cuban and U.S.
  • It is discovered that the Cuban squad, which is meant to be made up of just Havana-based players, is actually made up of All-Star players from other island clubs, and the identities of Mickey and Glen are revealed.
  • ‘The truth about Derrick/Mickey’ is revealed by Tripp/Glen.
  • In front of his coach and teammates, Derrick tells the truth, but his buddies forgive him since they would not have gotten as far as they did without him.

Derrick pays a final visit to Tripp in the local police station, where they say their goodbyes. Tripp gets freed from jail after a year, and in the film’s closing scene, he tosses a baseball to Derrick that strikes the glass of Patty’s vehicle, breaking it.

It continues to be the most cinematic of our sports because, at its heart, it is about real beings and their flaws as much as their accomplishments. Baseball would have had to be invented if it hadn’t already been done so by the movies.

Hollywood apos;s Rejection, the People apos;s Gain!

  • The film was unfairly released with only a restricted theatrical run. It has proven to be another another successful novel by John Grisham! In protest of Hollywood’s perverted morals, this film was created. In the film’s setting of Little League Baseball, the plot revolves around the moral story of a father/son relationship. A widowed lawyer on the run from the Internal Revenue Service decides to assume a new identity for himself and his son, and enrolls his now thirteen-year-old son in one more season of Little League. When his son’s baseball abilities grab the attention of the media as his team comes closer to the Little League world championship, this may have posed a serious danger to their newly discovered identities, and they may have had to abandon their new identities. Exceptional family picture that avoids all of the pitfalls of the typical Hollywood success formula, such as violence, sexual content, and profane language. A real winner that leaves the spectator with a moral lesson to contemplate after watching! Read the entire review

  • It was because I was interested in watching the finished result after spending time in the bleachers at Williamsport, PA when portions of the film were being filmed that I decided to acquire the DVD. I must admit that I was pleasantly impressed by the final result. The performance was excellent, and the plot was simple to understand. As a baseball fan who who appreciates family entertainment, I would strongly suggest this film. 5 stars out of 5 for this product sbylea118Posted on July 5, 2007

  • My son has undergone three open heart surgeries and is a fantastic baseball player, to say the least. This film brought up a lot of memories of him for me. The doctors told him he couldn’t accomplish anything, but he proved them wrong by proving them wrong. He was tossing the ball at 72 miles per hour like Mickey Mouse. Baseball players in the 11-12 age range will recognize themselves in the film
  • When they reach this stage, they will always wish they could play one more year. This is a fantastic film about the ups and downs of a family dealing with many wrongs in their lives, and about the strength they have to attempt to stay together as a family through it all. It also presents the tale of baseball and little league the way it should be told, which is in a straightforward manner. WONDERFUL! My youngster was enthralled by this film to the point that I was renting it four times a week. It was purchased by me.

  • There’s a lot wrong with this, but I don’t care. As a youngster, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I enjoyed this movie. This one has a nostalgic feel about it that seeps through the seams. It is total and utter nacho cheese, but it works for me
  • The entire scenario is a little ludicrous, despite the fact that it attempts to depict it in a realistic manner. At the end of the day, the entire continuity and logic thing is a bit ridiculous. However, it is a lighthearted little baseball picture that kept my interest throughout the entire running time, and I liked watching it with my father
  • This was my favorite movie growing up, don’t ask me why, because the acting is subpar, and the narrative, while solid, can be guessed ahead of time. When I revisit this movie, it brings back fond memories, which makes it a four- to five-star film in my opinion. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this at least a hundred times already.
