A book containing baseball regulations. A tape measure is used to measure distances. A lottery ticket, to be precise. The cash and credit cards were in the pocket of Bengie Molina’s father when the latter died of a heart attack while playing baseball on a rutted Little League diamond in his Puerto Rican neighborhood. A wonderful book about his father, Molina’s lovely memoir about his father, who taught his three kids about devotion, humility, courage, and the true meaning of success via baseball, is based on these objects.

Only the DiMaggio brothers can compete with the Molinas in terms of being the most accomplished baseball siblings in history.

He was too sluggish, too sensitive, and too little for the task at hand.

All along, he believed he was realizing his father’s own failed goal of baseball stardom – only to realize that it had never been his father’s desire in the first instance.

The New York Times best-seller about the Molina brothers, who played catcher in Major League Baseball and went on to earn Gold Gloves and World Series championships: “A straightforward, emotionally touching narrative that stands out from the typical baseball book” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). Bengie and his two brothers—José and Yadier, who was a six-time All-Star—became well-known catchers in the Major Leagues, winning World Series championships among their many achievements.

Bengie had the lowest chance of making it to the Majors.

To earn the respect of his father, Bengie endured failure after humiliating failure until he was clutching the World Series trophy in a champagne-saturated clubhouse one night.

Minola, written with the emotional power of sports classics such as Field of Dreams and Friday Night Lights, is about a love story between a formidable but flawed father and a son who, while uncovering the truth about his father’s life, comes to understand his own as a result of his father’s journey.

“It’s this year’s baseball novel that has the best chance of being transformed into a fantastic movie” (Chicago Tribune).

  • Depending on how much of a baseball fan you are, it can seem obvious that they are all current or past major league catchers based on their positions.
  • In the bookMolina: The Story of the Father Who Raised an Unlikely Baseball Dynasty, Benjamin Molina serves as the inspiration for the main character.
  • Reading portions of the soft cover book isn’t quite as inspiring as hearing the words stated out in the context of the story.
  • In contrast to reading specific passages too quickly and missing the passion and feeling that is being imparted, the reading tempo is what distinguishes this passage.
  • Bengie Molina was the eldest of three brothers, and I am the youngest of two sisters, and I am the youngest of three brothers.
  • Although the exterior elements may have been different, it was the experiences and sentiments that allowed the reader to have a genuine connection to the narrative.
  • Despite the fact that the book is about his father, I was nevertheless taken aback when Bengie stopped referring to himself in the first chapter.
  • Each of the brothers has competed in and won a World Series championship.
  • The brothers are well-known for their involvement with the Puerto Rican squad in the World Baseball Classic, both as players and coaches.
  • In the same way as their father did.

  2. Ahead of the Curve, The Only Rule is it has to Work, and The Phenomenon were three baseball books I had listened to in a row, and I was eager to hear another.
  3. Because of the reasons stated above, Molina was not at the top of my list, and it simply didn’t seem like a baseball book when compared to the other titles.
  4. I was disappointed when it came to an end since it was such excellent storytelling.
  5. My favorite part of the book was the comparison between Benjamin Molina’s three boys and how they were all handled.
  6. According to Bengie, Yadier did not have as difficult a relationship with his father.
  7. The most emotional portion of the book has to be the final chapter, when Bengie talks about his father’s death and the plans for his funeral in Puerto Rico.
  8. Benjamin Molina had a profound influence on so many people, as seen by the events that transpired in the days after his death.
  9. Even if it wasn’t wholly different from what I had anticipated, the experience was vastly different from what I had anticipated.
  10. However, the quantity of family talk that took place and the influence that it had on the remainder of the novel were exceptional.
  11. All of these guys have their unique stories to tell, although many of them are similar in nature.

In order to make a little more dollars or to get their name out there, many sportsmen write books. However, I believe Bengie Molina published his book as a means to respect his father’s memory in the greatest manner possible by sharing his story with everyone else across the world.

‘Molina’ Remembers A Father Who Raised Three World Series Champs

Jose and Bengie Molina, as well as their brother Yadier, were all winners of two World Series rings during their time in the Major League Baseball. (Photo courtesy of Stephen Dunn/Getty Images) ) Originally broadcast on Only A Game, this tale was part of the “Inspiration Show,” which examined stories of motivation in sports. Bengie Molina was a major league baseball pitcher who played in the Major Leagues from 1998 to 2010. His brother Jose was a professional soccer player from 1999 until 2014.

  • Louis Cardinals.
  • BL: Early in Bengie Molina’s baseball career — when he was just 12 years old, to be exact — his manager, who also happened to be his father, instructed him to use a lighter bat than the one he preferred.
  • Despite his best efforts, he never removed the bat from his shoulder.
  • It took her a long time to drag him away from the field, over a busy street, and into the backseat of the family car, where she instructed him to wait while she returned to the game.
  • BM: I was in such a foul mood.
  • But everyone was using that bat, and gosh, that bat was a beautiful piece of equipment.
  • However, it was far too hefty for me, and I couldn’t comprehend why.

And my father returned, sat down, and got in his car to start driving.

BM: Thank you very lot.

And I promised myself, “I’ll never do that again,” and I didn’t do it after that.

But it served as a lesson for me as well, not just because he is my father, but also because if I did it to him, I could easily do it to so many other people, and I didn’t want that to happen.

As a result, I took it seriously and went along that path.

And it appears that you first expressed an interest in becoming a baseball player when you witnessed your father, who was then playing in a semi-professional league, hit a home run as a tiny boy.

BM: Well, on that particular day, we arrived early, and I recall having a good time with him in the stadium simply playing catch.

And I was completely at a loss for what to do.

And when my father wasn’t striking, I wasn’t paying attention to the game.

But I remember when he walked up to bat and stated, “I’m not going to take any chances.” “Guys, you’ve reached the end of the game.

Nobody took him seriously at all.

Furthermore, I recall everyone pursuing me out of the dugout.

You should know that I accompanied him to home plate to celebrate.

And then, eventually, after a long time, my father came across me and grabbed me up.

My father had three boys, to be sure, but he also had thousands of children and thousands of sons as a result of his work as a coach.

BL: Your father raised three boys who all went on to play in the Major League Baseball.

Each made it as a catcher, although that’s a little more difficult to imagine.

Your father must have worked as a coach in some capacity.

Remember, everyone in this town is familiar with the Molina brothers, who play baseball.

They aren’t aware of the two parents that made it possible for us to come to this country.

Every year, he coached a squad of sixteen children.

I mean, that’s a lot of kids, to be honest with you.

He did it because he genuinely cared about them.

He wished for them to grow up to be great men and nice people in their lives.

Did your father’s lessons influence how you interacted with pitchers during your professional baseball career with the Angels, Blue Jays, Giants, and Rangers teams?

(Photo courtesy of Brian Blanco/Getty Images) BM: Without a doubt.

It was him who remarked, “We are a family here, and we need to be able to communicate with one another.

If you wanted to be successful with the Angels, Ramon Ortiz, you had to go out there with your Spanish and attempt to fool him in his head because he wasn’t thinking too much at the time.

You were able to capture Sean White, with whom you had to communicate in hushed tones since he would become agitated if you simply screamed at him or whatever.

BL: You and your brothers believed you were following in your father’s footsteps by becoming Major League baseball players, and you were right.

What was it, exactly?

Then there’s the prospect of playing in the Major Leagues.

That’s what I felt was the ultimate goal for him, and I was right.

I’m not sure whether I want to give anything away about the book’s conclusion, but that was not the case at all.

BL: If you don’t mind, I’ll respect your request not to give anything away about the plot of the book, but I’d want to share a piece from the epilogue since I believe it puts some of what we’ve been discussing into context.

Another aspect of baseball’s allure was the fact that it could be played anywhere.

Allow the strikeouts, dropped balls, and home runs to fade away into the dirt and grass of the field.

What are your thoughts?

Before you are a baseball player, you are a human being.

Before you can be a really excellent baseball player, you must first prove yourself to be a very nice person.

His teachings on baseball came after he had taught us how to behave, to respect, how not to throw your helmet down, and how not to do all of these other things.

Bill’s Thoughts On “Molina: The Story Of The Father Who Raised An Unlikely Baseball Dynasty” Bill’s Thoughts On “Molina: The Story Of The Father Who Raised An Unlikely Baseball Dynasty” It wasn’t until I discovered that Joan Ryan had collaborated with Bengie Molina on the book that I realized that Molina would be superior to the majority of athlete autobiographies out there.

A lot of people were educated about some of the problems, hurdles, and outrages that female gymnasts and figure skaters have endured as a result of Ryan’s outstanding book ” Little Girls in Pretty Boxes,” which was published in 2012.

Throughout the book, the event is told quickly and without becoming mired down in baseball detail.

Even issues unrelated to baseball, such as Molina’s father’s criticism of Molina’s choice to divorce his first wife, are included in the story of Molina. The end effect appears to be Molina’s genuine and emotional admiration for his family, delivered with the bare minimum of cliché.
