When you attend a Major League Baseball (MLB) game and glance up at the large scoreboard that can be found in the outfield of practically every stadium, you will generally notice several columns at the end of the line score. These columns are known as the “end of the line score.” For both sides, there are the normal runs, hits, and errors, and in certain parks, there are also runners left on base (LOB) for each team. MVR, on the other hand, is a new column that has appeared recently. So, what exactly is MVR?
Starting with the 2020 season, each club will be allowed a total of five mound visits every game.
On the surface, this appears to be a straightforward regulation; yet, when you consider how frequently extra personnel other than the pitcher are called to the mound, you realize that there are certain exceptions and technicalities to this rule in place.
What Are Mound Visits in Baseball?
The key to understanding the rule that governs mound visits in baseball is to first understand what is meant by a mound visit according to the rulebook. A mound visit is defined as an occasion where a coach or player other than the pitcher calls time to go to the pitcher’s mound for the purpose to have a discussion with the pitcher. When a mound visit occurs, the home plate umpire signals to the press box the number of mound visits remaining. There are a variety of reasons why these discussions take place.
- Occasionally, mound visits will take place when the opposition announces apinch hitterlate in a close game and a coach wants to deliver the scouting report of the new batter to the pitcher.
- Also, toward the end of a pitcher’s outing, the pitching coach may go out to the mound not just to calm down a pitcher in trouble, but primarily to stall in an attempt to allow a reliever warming in thebullpenextra throws.
- Any subsequent visits after using up the total number of mound visits you’re allotted will result in the automatic removal of the pitcher.
- However, in addition to these situations, there are exceptions to the rules.
What Are the Exceptions to the Mound Visit Rule?
In light of the nature of mound visits, there are specific situations in which visits are essential and appropriate, and as a result, they are excluded from the regulation and may be made in an infinite number at the discretion of the umpire. A coach and/or another player may make a mound visit without incurring a penalty if there is reason to believe the pitcher is injured, the catcher was confused with his signs, an infielder wished to clean their spikes, or the offensive team has introduced a pinch hitter, at the discretion of the umpire.
Secondly, every now and again, a misinterpretation of signals, known as a cross-up, occurs between the pitcher and the catcher, leading to the pitcher delivering a different pitch than the catcher believed was being called.
In that situation, the catcher frequently catches the ball in an unusual manner (or fails to catch it at all) as a result of the pitch’s unexpected movement (or lack of movement).
Additionally, a scraper is located on the back of the pitcher’s rubber, which allows players to clear mud off of their spikes without incurring a mound visit.
Whenever the offensive side asks for a pinch hitter, position players (often the catcher) are permitted to visit the mound without it being counted as a visit as long as it occurs before to the start of the at-bat and there is no coach there.
Why Are Mound Visits Limited?
One issue you could have regarding mound visits is why go to all the work of restricting them and then having all the requirements for what constitutes and does not constitute an official mound visit. There’s a good reason for this, after all. Major League Baseball began limiting mound visits in 2018 in order to decrease the amount of times games are interrupted by a coach or the catcher visiting the mound. The increased duration of games was cited as the reason. This came as a result of a regulation change implemented in 2016 that limited mound visits to 30 seconds in duration.
- While this restriction has remained in place, mound visits have been reduced from an unlimited period of time to 30 seconds as of January 1, 2016.
- In order to make it apparent to all players, coaches, and spectators how many visits they still have remaining in the game, MLB scoreboards have subsequently included the “MVR” column to their displays.
- So, how well did this strategy perform?
- As a result of the regulations remaining unchanged in 2019, Major League Baseball game timings increased to the 2017 level of 3:05, and even higher to 3:07 in the shortened 2020 season.
- The regulation looks to be sticking around, so the next time you’re at a baseball game and see “MVR” shown on the baseball scoreboard, you’ll know what it means.

How to read a baseball scoreboard or line score
|BaseballLine Score The line score is the very basic display, similar to a scoreboard, that you will need to know how to read at a live game or on television.Teams:On the far left, you will see both teams listed, with the home team on the bottom. Runs by inning:The numbers 1-9 indicate the inning, while the numbers even with the team name represent the runs scored in each inning. R:Runs. The total number of runs scored by each team. This is the most important number as it represents the score. H:Hits. Total hits awarded to the team. The number of times batters successfully reached first base. E:Errors. Total errors, or mistakes that should have resulted in an out, committed by each team. Should be low, usually 0. W/L:Win or Loss for a pitcher along with their record. 3-2 would be 3 wins and 2 losses. Only one pitcher per game is awarded a win or loss. When I look at the line score above from the 2006 World Series, I can quickly tell then following. Saint Loius (STL) won the game 5 to 4 at home. They were behind from the second inning to the 7 th inning. Detroit tied up the game in the top of the eighth inning, but then St. Louis scored in the bottom of the eighth, which they were able to hold onto. Since they were up in the ninth inning, they didn’t need to bat in the bottom of the ninth because the victory was already locked up. Detriot had one more hit than St. Louis, but they also committed an error. I am curious if the error led to a run being scored, and will look into that when I examine the box score by seeing how many runs were “earned.” Wainwright was awarded the win, while Zumaya was awarded a loss.|

All rest days are calculated on the basis of calendar days. A pitcher who pitches 57 pitches on Saturday, for example, would not be able to pitch again until Wednesday since he would have exceeded his pitch limit (resting on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday). After reaching his or her daily pitch limit during an at-bat, a pitcher will be permitted to finish the at-bat but will be relieved shortly after. Scorekeepers are responsible for keeping track of each pitcher’s pitch count and notifying the relevant head coach when a pitcher has reached his or her pitch count restriction.
- Capacity for catching: A player is allowed to catch for a total of three innings each day.
- Both the regular season and make-up games, as well as Club games, will be subject to certain pitching and catching restrictions.
- STEALING BASES: Runners may lead off first and second base and steal bases at their discretion.
- After a first warning per team, runners who leave early will be called out by the referee.
- THE “DROPPED THIRD STRIKE” RULE WILL NOT APPLY IN MUSTANG: The “dropped third strike” rule will not apply in Mustang.
- An out-of-play pitcher’s pick-off attempt that is overthrew will result in the runner gaining one base if the pitcher’s foot remained on the pitching rubber, or two bases if the pitcher’s foot departed the rubber prior to making the throw.
- Head first sliding is not permitted, with the exception of while diving back to base to prevent being picked off by the other team.
CONDUCT: We’re teaching baseball and sportsmanship to the kids in our program.
Tricks involving hidden balls will not be permitted.
COACHES: The third-base dugout will be occupied by the visiting team.
During the game, all coaches are required to remain in the dugout or in the doorway.
Players who wish to warm up are only permitted to do so in specified warm-up locations.
EQUIPMENT: Metal cleats on the bottom of the shoes are not permitted.
For all male players, a protective cup is highly suggested.
Abuse of umpires will not be condoned under any circumstances.
Coaches will be held liable for the actions of their supporters on the field.
In the unlikely event that no umpire is available, coaches should designate someone to call the game for them.
INTERACTING WITH THE UMPIRES Coaches are not permitted to call into question players’ decisions.
When it comes to appeals on check swings, the umpire is under no obligation to solicit assistance.
It is also possible for the designated coach to consult with the umpire regarding interpretations of the rules.
What the umpire decides at the end of the game is final for that game.

A community stands together
On Saturday, July 10, more than 40 people gathered on the seawall in Vineyard Haven to take a stance against domestic and sexual abuse as part of the Connect to End Violence campaign organized by the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. In spite of the rain, Jennifer Neary, program director for Connect to End Violence, remained upbeat. “The Sharks baseball team came to express their support and assist me,” she explained. Russ Curran, the general manager of the MV Sharks, was the one who arranged the surprise visit.
With a sign that simply said “Mom,” Jackson, who hails from Georgia, made his way through the crowd.
A native of New Hampshire, Shapiro has previously competed in two earlier competitions this year, in 2018 and 2019.
Seidl, who hails from Wellesley, Massachusetts, paid tribute to his mother and sister, Shanon.
Malowski has put forth a lot of effort on behalf of this cause.
“When you personalize, you begin to think about the women in your lives who have been subjected to some form of inappropriate behavior by men,” he explained.
It was the first time the pair from West Tisbury had taken part in a demonstration of solidarity.
Darin was born in 1960 and died in 1988, according to her sign.
“Violence against women is not an acceptable mode of conduct,” he stated.
Domestic abuse, in my opinion, must be stopped.
It is expected that they will be held accountable as well if they do not speak out against other guys.” The following is how Neary put it: “Domestic and sexual violence against women is not only a women’s issue; it is a human one.”
