Steve Rushin: 44 is a magic number in sports
When I forget my age – which is something I do a lot at my age – I simply think about how old the Super Bowl is: we’re both 44 at the moment. Super Bowl and I were born three months apart, but we’ve grown up together as fat, prone to wardrobe mishaps, and possessors of horrible musical taste in our respective fields. Because it was born at the age of one, the Super Bowl claims to be 45 years old, but I was born at the age of zero. But the reality is that we’ve both reached the age of 44, which is a number – possibly the number – that represents the outer limits of athletic vigor.
- As of last week, White Sox infielder Omar Vizquel was the second-oldest player in the major leagues, trailing only Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who is also 44 years old.
- Someone had scribbled “Happy 49th, Omar” on the wipe board outside the Red Sox clubhouse on his birthday, which he had noticed.
- All aged folks have the same appearance.
- Kennedy were visions of national vitality – but for a baseball player, forty-four years old is an old man.
- Ryan was 44 at the time, and I was 24, and despite the fact that we both had a haircut that was almost identical, I remember thinking to myself, “This man is ancient.” There have been some Methuselehs who have continued to play baseball despite their age and deterioration.
- Dennis Eckersley pitched his final game a week before he turned 44, but he did not announce his retirement until after his 44th birthday, which must have been a difficult decision.
- The quarterbacks Warren Moon and Vinnie Testaverde, as well as the hockey player Claude Lemieux and the basketball player Kevin Willis, were all 44 years old when they took their rocking rockers to their final resting place in the world of professional sports.
Robinson, who many regarded as the greatest of all time boxing champions, had by then devolved into a sad spectacle as a 44-year-old elderly man.
Only then, at the age of 45, did he learn that he could still play, and he continued to do so until he was 51.
The number forty-four is diametrically opposed to the number 56.
It’s an odd place to end up, not only for sportsmen, but also for their records.

Athletes aren’t the only ones that retire at the age of 44.
Gary Larson retired from illustrating “The Far Side” when he was 44 years old.
Scott Fitzgerald both resigned from life at that age, recognizing that there was no such thing as a second act in American life for them.
At least, not on a regular basis.
The feeling of being thrown down an elevator shaft when an airline requests your year of birth and you have to scroll down – and down – and down to locate it on their website is excruciatingly frustrating.
None of this is meant to be a lament.
But, in the midst of a pivotal week for the 44th president, this 44-year-old man who has spent the majority of his life on the northern 44th parallel – the part that runs through Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New York, rather than the part that runs along the Mediterranean – has had the number 44 on his mind.
In the words of Henry David Thoreau, who wrote: “We would do well to follow the words of Henry David Thoreau.” “Do what you are passionate about.
Learn about your own bone by gnawing on it, burying it, unearthing it, then gnawing on it some more.” Thoreau was a smart guy who managed to cram a lot of life into his 44 years on this planet.

There are three days of competition during the MLB All-Star week, which includes the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, the Home Run Derby, and the MLB All-Star Game itself. The annual Home Run Derby took place at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, on Monday, July 12. Eight sluggers entered the field to compete in the annual event. 2 Prior to the July 13 contest, the All-Star Game participants donned No. 44 jerseys in honor of Hall of Famer Henry ‘Hank’ Aaron, who was born on that day. Why did everyone wear 44 during the MLB All-Star Week?
Nonetheless, those who tuned in to the July 12 celebrations saw that all of the athletes competing in the Home Run Derby were wearing the number 44. Henry Aaron, a Hall of Famer and Braves hero who passed away in January, was commemorated during workouts by the wearing of No. 44 uniforms by the coaching staff, pitchers, and position players. On April 8, 1974, the renowned slugger eclipsed New York Yankees great Babe Ruth to become the all-time leading home run hitter in Major League Baseball.
44 outfits were wore ahead of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, which will take place on July 13.
They were dressed in their customary team clothes, with their names on the back, but with the number 44 in place of their usual number on the front.
However, once a new voting statute was enacted in Georgia, Major League Baseball relocated the game to Denver in April.
“We will continue with our preparations to commemorate the legacy of Hank Aaron during this season’s All-Star festivities,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We are committed to making Hank Aaron’s memory a significant part of this week.”
Who won the 2021 Home Run Derby?
The Home Run Derby was held on July 12th, and eight of the game’s best hitters entered the field to participate. Among those who took part in the competition were:
- Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels, Joey Gallo of the Texas Rangers, Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals, Trevor Story of the Denver Rockies, Matt Olson of the Oakland Athletics, Salvador Pérez of the Kansas City Royals, Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, and the reigning World Series champions, the New York Mets

Alonso faced up against Mancini in the championship round a year after the Orioles star was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer. When asked if he was the best power hitter on the globe, Alonso replied affirmatively during a news conference while wearing a spinning championship medallion and displaying his trophy.
“There was never a time in the game that I believed I was going to lose,” he continued.
How can I watch the MLB All-Star Game?
The MLB All-Star Game will be broadcast live on FOX on Tuesday, July 13 at 5:30 p.m. ET. ESPN2 and FOX Deportes will also broadcast the game live, as will ESPNU.
Retired Uniform Numbers in the National League
The Yankees and Indians began using uniform numbers on a permanent basis in 1929 to make it easier for fans to identify who was playing who on the field. They were assigned to players according on their position in the lineup; for example, the players who batted leadoff wore number one, while the players who batted cleanup wore number four, and so on. This practice gained popularity, and within a few years, every team had numbers on their uniforms. Shortly after it gained popularity, it began to shift as numbers were retired by clubs, making it hard to complete the lineups and allowing players to wear numbers that did not match to their place in the lineup, hence allowing them to wear other numbers.
Baseball Almanac conducted the research.
Jackie Robinson was the first and only player in Major League Baseball history to have his uniform number (42) retired by the organization (April 15, 1997).
Louis Cardinals organization has retired more numbers than any other National League team in the history of the league?
