This baseball hitting practice helps players improve their rhythm, timing, balance, and swing sequence while also giving them the opportunity to work on pitches from all directions, including inside and outside the strike zone. It also aids batters in dealing with pitches of varying heights. Ideally, this baseball drill should be performed in a team environment with each batter receiving 25 swings at a time, with no more than 10 swings at a time.

  • During the delivery, the pitcher shows the batter the ball before pulling it back and delivering it to him. By displaying the ball and drawing it back, the hitter is able to work on his rhythm and timing, which is beneficial. When the ball is halfway to the batter, he should have his front foot planted firmly on the ground. This provides him with a balanced strength position from which to strike

3-Ball Front Toss Drill

In this practice, you will perform a variant of the front toss drill. As we throw, we will focus on pitches inside the strike zone, down the center off the front edge of the plate, and outside the strike zone off the back corner of the plate in this hitting practice. Focus on ensuring that you have the right sequence while hitting the ball in the inner area of the plate, with a forceful hip turn to ensure you can get your hands inside the ball as soon as you hit it. A team setup requires that each batter hit three pitches from each of the three locations, for a total of nine repetitions per hitter.

  • Three baseballs should be placed on the ground in the vicinity of home plate. Each ball symbolizes the location where a certain batter would want to hit that ball in respect to its position on the field. The batter can determine whether or not he is hitting a specific pitch in the proper location by referring to these reference points.

Front Toss Curve Ball Drill

In this hitting exercise, the batter improves his stance, balance, rhythm, and timing, as well as the right sequencing of the swing, as well as his perceptual abilities, as well as his rhythm, timing, and rhythm and timing. Each batter should complete a total of ten repetitions at once. In a practice session, he should complete two sets of ten repetitions.

Baseball hitting drills for power are available at The Hitting Vault, where we have over 100 different workouts. Four Baseball Hitting Drills for Power

The four drills that follow will prepare you to bat with power, whether you’re a high school baseball player, a collegiate baseball player, or a professional baseball player who has made it through college level. A significant distinction is made by the fact that these drills are meant to engage the bottom half and build power from the ground up. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman’s statistics from 2017 to 2018, as well as his crazy increase in numbers.

1) The Flamingo Drill

The flamingo exercise is an excellent starting point for this series of power hitting drills because it addresses three crucial parts of the swing: balance, bat control, and lower-half rotation (which are all worked simultaneously). This baseball hitting technique challenges you to step off your back foot and generates momentum when you strike the baseball. All you will need for this practice is a bat, a ball, a tee, and a net to complete it. Stride to the tee using your back leg, then strike the ball with your foreleg.

  2. Since 2015, Major League Baseball teams have started experimenting with ways to include vision training into their player development programs.
  3. The first step is to begin by lying on your back leg with your front leg lifted at a 90-degree angle.
  4. Attack the baseball with your lower half first, and then blast through the baseball in the second step.
  5. Step Three: When used in conjunction with the rest of the drills, this baseball hitting practice for power serves as a wonderful warm-up exercise.

2) Full Turns

The act of hitting a baseball is one of the most difficult things a person can accomplish in sports, yet the actions that go up an outstanding swing are surprisingly basic. The Full Turns practice is straightforward, yet it is quite effective. All you’ll need is a bat to complete this task. The goal of the complete turn drill is to stimulate the core and bottom half of the body in order to create stronger and more forceful turns throughout the golf swing. Start in your stance with your arms outstretched in front of you and the bat in your hands out in front of you.

  1. There are a couple modifications to this practice from here, and we recommend that you incorporate all three into your training.
  2. You will get into your stance, stride like you usually would, and then halt in the launch position to complete the movement.
  3. After the pause, twist your hips all the way through and finish the swinging motion.
  4. In order for the batter to continue their swing, it is critical that if you kicked out the hitter’s back foot, they fall BACK rather than forward.
  5. If you want to do this, take a complete swing and feel the bottom half erupt as the body turns through the baseball.
  6. In the complete turn exercise with timing, the hitter will do the identical actions as in the previous drill, but the front toss will be timed from fifteen feet away.

The batter may concentrate on the drill while also focusing on timing his load and blasting through the ball during practice sessions. Straightforward, yet quite effective.

3) Lower Body Coil

Throughout The Hitting Vault, you will hear the term “Launch Position” used frequently. The launch position is the position in which you are when you are about to swing the bat. Coil drilling using the lower body is intended to assist in loading the bottom half properly and getting into a favorable launch position for the upper part of the coil drill. Using a bat, you may do one of our favorite power baseball hitting workouts. All you need is a baseball bat to complete this practice. The lower body coil drill requires you to rotate in such a way that your belly button can be seen by the catcher, which is critical for success.

  1. A coil is formed in the bottom half of your body, which allows the hips to have an early start in the kinetic chain, which then generates power throughout the duration of the swing.
  2. The exercise begins with the batter standing in his stance on the field.
  3. Keep an eye out for how the hitter’s back pocket is being revealed to the pitcher, and how his belly button is pointed towards the catcher in the image below.
  4. You will stride your standard length from this coil and keep it in place.
  5. This drill is ideal for generating power because it is located in the lower body.
  6. Throughout the ballgame, you will observe that Christian has excellent motions and rotates his hips throughout the game.
  7. Notice how Josh loads into his rear leg and then proceeds to release the rest of his swing during his stride, as shown in the video above.

4) K Posture Drill

The K-Posture Practice is the final drill in our series of baseball hitting drills for power, and it is the most difficult. A bat, a tee, a ball, and an aslant board will be required for this activity. Muscle memory of what a good launch position should feel like will be created with the k-posture exercise. This drill incorporates full turns, timing, and lower body coils, which is essentially everything we’ve been working on throughout this post thus far. To begin this drill, set the slant board at a steeper inclination – around 45 degrees – to allow the batter to feel the right load position when hitting.

The rear leg should be at the top of the board, and the weight in this swing should be exerted into the back leg, as shown in the illustration.

Explode off the slant board and charge towards the baseball with all of your might. Take note of how the hitter’s rear foot is off the board in the picture below. He is flipped onto his front side, allowing all of the tension that had built up in the burden to be released.

Be Patient: What You Think Are Swing Flaws May Be Youth Hitters’ Way of Learning to Use Their Bodies

Chase Glaum is the author of this piece. When I was coaching high school freshman football, I had a lot of fun with it. The growth of one particular child was such that he went through three pairs of cleats in the course of one season. During the course of the school year, he had gained 18 inches in height and was arguably the most uncoordinated child I had ever witnessed. My memory of him is of a chat we had when he remarked, “I don’t understand why I can’t throw or catch a football, shoot a basketball, or throw a baseball as well as I used to.” “I swear to you, I’ve never been this lousy in sports.” Because he was continuously running into things, this same youngster would also show up to practice with bruises on his shins and shoulder when he wasn’t running into things.

Every time he experienced a growth spurt, his body required more time to learn how to navigate across space.

He eventually reached the point in his senior year when he stopped growing.

Drastic Movement Solutions for Youth Hitters

Frequently, parents raise inquiries and voice concerns about what they believe to be issues with their child’s swinging motion. When children have “issues,” they often have “solutions” that are dramatic in nature, such as unconventional methods of getting to the ball that are effective for the child’s body at the time. Kiddos are continually growing and gaining new degrees of proprioception (perception or knowledge of the position and movement of the body), which is often the underlying cause of these movement-based interventions.

  • If you haven’t already, go attend a high school freshman sports event; you will almost certainly see at least one of them.
  • Growth spurts were like eclipses in that they only happened once in a while.
  • Because his development spurts were uncommon, his body did not have to continually adjust to the changes in his environment.
  • When it comes to kids baseball, it is typical to see an athlete take a completely different swing on every single pitch.

We witness a youngster whose swing appears to be having issues, and we want (or need) to help him or her repair them. We could, on the other hand, take a step back and ask ourselves these questions:

  1. Is this youngster physically strong? Is he quick on his feet? What is the reason for his swing being like this?

And then. just don’t say anything at all.

Growing Pains

If the child is physically powerful, he will almost certainly need to go more quickly. If the child is going quickly, but the bat appears to be dragging him all over the place, the child clearly needs to strengthen his or her muscles. Having addressed the first two questions, let’s go on to the third, which will most likely be answered in some way by the answers to the first two questions. Depending on the situation, we can look at the surroundings, restrictions, or athlete experience—for example, how many times has the player hit the ball with a bat in his career?

When this child experiences a growth spurt, it is possible that we may have to start again with the instruction of particular motions.

Because of proprioception: if the player’s limbs are suddenly in new positions, the old modifications won’t be as effective as they were before.

Examples of these sorts of dramatic swing errors include: a severe head tilt, stepping into the bucket, and being too early in the game.

Drastic Head Tilt

The extreme head tilt is something I notice pretty frequently. I’ve seen it in people of different ages, even those as young as nineteen years old. This movement solution is most typical among younger hitters, who must figure out a means to get their eyes on plane with the pitch in order to smash the ball. Several people have emailed me footage of a child swinging, with the worry that his head is leaning excessively. “During the swing, my 14-year-old son brings his right ear close to his right shoulder — this is quite obvious in the swing below, where you can see his head being virtually parallel to the ground near contact.

Because of his rear eye dominance, he has recently experimented with a more open posture to see whether it improves his ability to pick up the ball.

“Are there any drills or cues that might be worked on?” I’m a big fan of this kid’s swing, and after seeing the video, a few of suggestions sprang to mind for how he may continue to develop it.

Here Are Some Observations

1) He is beginning to acquire natural strength, as are the majority of 14U players. At this age, proprioception is also continually evolving, which is another factor to consider. As a result, he may find himself in unexpected positions at times, but I would not be too concerned about it as long as the emphasis on achieving the task at hand (hitting the ball) is placed on moving quickly and swinging forcefully.

2) Here’s a side-to-side picture of him and Buster Posey during contact with the ball. There are a few of things to note: their postures at touch are quite similar when we pause the movie, which is interesting. As a result, when Posey strikes the ball, he actually drags it down the line.

Things to Look At

Unlike the young hitter, Posey’s body is oriented toward the left side of the infield, whereas the youth hitter is oriented toward centerfield. This posture is appropriate for a batter of this player’s age since it is frequently the consequence of swinging forcefully without the power required to hold positions during the swing or to naturally slow the swing at the appropriate moment. However, because his body is attempting to move quickly on a pitch that appears to be set up down the middle but deep in the zone (take note of the position of the tee in relation to his body), his body understands that the eyes must go behind the ball in order to make contact with the ball.

Due to the shorter amount of time he had to react on a moving pitch, I could anticipate his head sinking even further.

Fixes for Drastic Head Tilt

  1. Using a high-tee or low-tee will assist in properly positioning this hitter’s stance when approaching the ball. Earlier in the game, the high tee could have provided more immediate benefits
  2. But, alternating between high and low tees provides the hitter with additional stimuli, which will enhance the swing in the long run. Check to see that the tee location isn’t too far into the zone (like on the plate or behind it).
  1. On average, I place the tee 4 to 8 inches in front of the plate on the table. Because of the angle at which the batter is positioned in relation to the tee, it is not always placed in the proper location. If the player is fairly level in the box, 4-8 inches should be sufficient
  2. Otherwise, 6-8 inches should be sufficient.
  1. Open stance with an offset – This will assist hitters in decelerating properly without having to sacrifice how hard they are attempting to swing
  1. An open stance with an offset will aid in direction (for this batter, I would make sure they are attempting to hit anything between centerfield and left center)
  2. An open stance with an offset will aid in speed.
  1. This practice can assist batters in learning a proper hinge, forward movement, the ideal stride for each particular hitter, and rhythm while moving in the correct direction. Hook ’em drill

When dealing with youth athletes and their numerous mobility solutions, there are a plethora of elements to consider. “Quick solutions,” like everything else, are rarely beneficial to gamers in the long run. These drills will aid in the development of the abilities that the player already possesses and is attempting to use during the swing. To avoid coaching these talents out of the player, we must be careful not to place him or her in less-than-optimal positions just because the swing is now configured.
