Baseball is ingrained in the fabric of American society. Many hours have been spent in front of the television with our friends and family, cheering on our favorite team to victory. The transmission of this knowledge from one generation to the next is a family tradition. We’d always fantasized about going to a baseball game and seeing some of the top names in the world on the field. This was our plan all along: to eat some hot dogs, snag a foul ball, and then return home to love our newest and most prized item.

But which MLB team has the most number of fans?

25.Oakland Athletics

Fans totaled 807,000. Oakland, California is the location. Nine championships have been held. Founded in the year 1901 (as Philadelphia Athletics) TheA’s won three consecutive World Championships between 1972 and 1974, with a roster that included such prominent players asVida Blue, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, and star reliever Rollie Fingers, among others. Despite this, they haven’t had much luck after then either. The Oakland Coliseum is where the team’s home games are held. The Oakland Raiders of the National Football League played their home games at the stadium from 1966 to 1981, then again from 1995 to 2019.

24. Colorado Rockies

925,000 people are fans of the band. Denver, Colorado is the city in question. 0 victories in championships Date of establishment: 1993 TheBlake Street Bombers are the only team that have never won a World Series championship. In truth, they only have one National League championship, which came from their historic 2007 season. Despite this, they have one of the most devoted fan following in the country. That duality has been a part of the Baltimore Orioles’ identity for a long time.

20. Minnesota Twins

Founded in the year 1901 (as Washington Senators) The franchise, which was founded in 1901 but moved to Minneapolis in 1961, has featured 19 American League batting champions since its inception. Joe Mauer is the last player to have received it, having done so in 2009. Since 2010, they have played their home games at Target Field in Minneapolis. Particularly in the last decade, theTwinshave experienced a number of difficulties.

In the next series, they defeated the New York Mets in five games to capture their second – and last – World Series triumph in franchise history. When the team relocated from Municipal Stadium to Kauffman Stadium (affectionately known as “The K”) in 1973, it became their permanent home.

It was dubbed “The Big Red Machine” after the color of the machine. Some of the most notable players from the ‘golden period’ included Johnny Bench, Tony Pérez, Pete Rose, Lee May (who was also known as Bobby Tolan), Gary Nolan, Jim Merritt, Wayne Simpson, Jim McGlothlin, Clay Carroll, Pedro Borbón, and Don Gullett.

Their second World Series championship came five years later, when they won two in a row. Since 2003, and following the demolition of Riverfront Stadium, the organization has played its home games in the Great American Ball Park, which is currently one of the most famous ballparks in the country.

16. Los Angeles Angels

The number of fans is 1.3 million. City: Anaheim, California 1st place in the championships In 1961, the company was established. Since its inception in 1961, the franchise has gone through four different name changes. After being known as the Los Angeles Angels from 1965 to 1996, they were renamed the California Angels from 1997 to 2004. They were previously known as the Anaheim Angels from 1995 to 2004. Due to the rules of its lease with the city of Anaheim, the team was forced to change its name in 2005.

Their rivalry with the Los Angeles Dodgers is one of the longest-running and most intense in the history of the American major leagues. Oracle Park is where they play, but it may not be as crowded as it once was now that the Giants have finally begun their long-overdue rebuilding process.

4. Chicago Cubs

The number of fans is 3.4 million. Chicago, Illinois is the city in question. Three championships have been won. Founded in the year 1876 (as Chicago White Stockings) The Chicago Cubs are a storied baseball organization. It took them 108 years to win the World Series in 2016, but they finally did it in 2016. Since 1916, the Chicago Cubs have played their home games at Wrigley Field. Wrigley Field is without a doubt one of the most legendary baseball stadiums in the history of the game. For years, the Cubs were considered ‘cursed,’ but today they’re consistent World Series challengers, thanks to the likes of Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Javier Báezon on the roster.

3. Los Angeles Dodgers

The number of fans is 3.4 million. Los Angeles, California is the location of the event. 7 championships have been won. Founded in the year 1883 (as Brooklyn Atlantics) There have been seven World Series championships and twenty-four National League pennants for the Dodgers throughout their history. It was an exhibition versus the Boston Red Sox in 2008 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that established the world record for the biggest audience for a single baseball game. There were 115,300 people in attendance that day.

With the additions of Mookie Betts and David Price to an already excellent team, they have all the ingredients to establish themselves as a perennial contender for many years to come.

2. Boston Red Sox

Founded in the year 1901 (as Boston Americans) The Boston Red Sox are not just another sports franchise. They have won nine World Series titles, which is the third-highest total of any Major League Baseball club, and their popularity across the world is almost as large as that of any other baseball team. When it comes to professional sports, the rivalry between them and the New York Yankees is among the most intense in the world.

With Rafael Devers at the helm of the offense, they’ll be back in the hunt for a championship in no time.

MLB value and revenue

Major League Baseball franchises are worth an average of 1.78 billion U.S. dollars per in 2019, according to Forbes. The total income generated by the Major League Baseball league in 2018 reached $9.9 billion U.S. dollars, the largest sum ever recorded. With regular season home attendance behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals, the New York Yankees are one of the most popular teams in baseball, ranking third in the league. In 2019, the average ticket price for New York Yankees games in the Major League Baseball was 47.62 U.S.

MLB and social media adoption

Despite the popularity of the sport, the Major League Baseball (MLB) is falling behind other professional sports leagues in the United States, such as the NBA (National Basketball Association) and the NFL (National Football League). Among the reasons for this include the league’s relatively late embrace of social media and the arguably harshest social media policy of any major sports league, which prohibits not only fans, but even teams and television stations, from promoting and debating material on social media platforms.

This policy shift is partly due to the desire to interact with younger sports viewers, who are more likely to discuss sports on social media than older sports audiences.

Who Is No.1? Ranking The 30 MLB Teams’ Fan Bases

What type of fan base is the most devoted? Which month has the most pleasant weather? What is the level of attendance? When attending a game, do people actively pay attention to what is going on? There are a variety of factors that contribute to having a positive or negative fan base, and we’ll examine how they all come together. Despite the fact that fans of all 30 clubs have varying levels of devotion, knowledge, engagement in games, and attendance, only one fan community can claim first place.
  1. Kevin C. Cox is a photographer who works for Getty Images. In the last 20 seasons, they have won two World Series championships. Cubs supporters would give their right arm to have the opportunity. The same cannot be said for the Marlins, who once drew 375 people to a single game. In terms of attendance, they finished 28th in 2010, with only little more than half of the stadium being filled on any given day. With all of the bright orange seats available for the Marlins games, it might be difficult to concentrate on the highlights. The fact that the city has a history of sending away excellent talent, as well as the variety of things to do in Miami, does not help.

Being consistently one of the worst offensive teams in the league makes for some dull baseball. To add insult to injury, the success of the Giants, who play just a few miles up the coast, has been a source of inspiration. They are barely able to fill 40% of their stadium, which places them 29th in baseball.

If you walk around downtown Pittsburgh, you’ll have a difficult time locating somebody wearing a Pirates jersey. The irony is that the Pirates play in one of the most beautiful venues in professional sports. It is located directly on the river and is quite clean and easily accessible. At the very least, there is no such thing as a Pirates supporter who jumps on the bandwagon. They are ranked 27th in baseball in terms of attendance, averaging slightly under 20,000 people each game.

The Nationals’ window of opportunity to build a fan base is closing, and in one of the country’s four smallest sports markets, that is terrible news for the team. Despite the fact that the franchise is still in its infancy, the Nationals are losing the trust of their supporters at an alarming rate. The absence of historical context does little to alleviate the issue.

Two of the team’s greatest players have openly expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of spectators at Tropicana Field. David Price took to Twitter to express his dissatisfaction with the supporters’ lack of support. Evan Longoria expressed his dissatisfaction to media. They had to give away 20,000 tickets in order to win the championship! With only 23,000 supporters attending each game, the squad is ranked 22nd in the league.
  1. Photograph by Brad White/Getty Images Even a well-attended game at the colossal Rogers Center appears empty due to the venue’s immense size. However, the sight of a sea of crimson when the Boston Red Sox arrive in town must be demoralizing for the players. Since their historic World Series run, the team’s fan base has been steadily declining. The Blue Jays are a long way away from the Maple Leafs in Toronto, and their lack of success since the early 1990s has seen them progressively fade away into obscurity. In 2010, they were only able to operate at an average of 39 percent capacity, which was the lowest among the majors.

However, that is now old history in Atlanta, as Braves supporters have been sluggish to rally behind the team’s most recent postseason run. According to a widely held belief, Braves supporters are indifferent. In fact, the Braves had only sold out five of their previous 13 National League Division Series games at Turner Field heading into this postseason. They sold out one postseason game, but just 89.5 percent of the seats were filled for the following game. The Braves are riding a wave of popularity, and this is a good thing. It is expected that the Braves’ attendance would fall significantly if the team gets off to a shaky start under Fredi Gonzalez.

The lack of improvement on the field has resulted in a generation of Royals supporters who have no idea what it’s like to watch their team compete at a high level. The average attendance statistics are low, and a limited market means fewer fans on a given night. Give the Royals credit for maintaining their excitement for a team that has been consistently bad. The young fan base provides management reason to be optimistic about the future. They are ranked 25th in terms of attendance.
  1. Photograph by Donald Miralle/Getty Images San Diego’s Padres have arguably the largest fair-weather fan following in baseball, with a fan population that isn’t very dedicated to the team. Even in the midst of a playoff race, going to a baseball game is comparable to going to the San Diego Zoo or taking a trip to a beautiful beach. It’s just something to fill the time. Petco Park’s novelty has worn off, and attendance has declined as a result. There aren’t a lot of die-hard Padres supporters who are interested in the team’s history and current status as a club.

In terms of attendance, the Indians were dead bottom in 2010, with only 17,395 people per game. Since then, interest in the Indians has waned significantly as the club continues to underperform and the franchise’s title drought grows even more intractable. Nonetheless, this is a fan base with considerable promise
  2. All they want is a quality club. And, like any other Cleveland club, the supporters are devoted to their team without question.
  1. Christian Petersen is a Getty Images contributor. The squad changes its outfits on what appears to be an annual basis in an attempt to raise income, as it isn’t generating much money at the ticket office. Because to the movable roof and air conditioning, the stadium has a significant advantage. The admirers, on the other hand, are largely from other cities. Die-hard Fans of the D-Backs are few and far between. The D-Backs’ rating is further hampered by the absence of a long history with the franchise. In 2010, the D-Backs were placed 21st in terms of average attendance.

They appear to be in the center of the attendance list all of the time, with this year’s showing placing them at No. 16. In the end, though, they were docked some points for the humiliating act of one of their fans, who allowed his fiancée to be pounded with a foul ball after jumping out of the way at the last second. In fact, I’m very certain that’s his ex-girlfriend now.

The Mariners were by far and away the most uninteresting club in the league this season. This is a franchise that is in desperate need of a resurgence in order to win back some of its former supporters. The level of fan loyalty is great, and the level of knowledge among the supporters is astounding. It is possible that the Mariners may find a way to compete again, and that the fans will return in force. I don’t hold it against the supporters of Seattle for their lack of support recently

This season, though, the Sox were rated 17th in terms of attendance. They do have a large number of die-hard supporters who would relish the opportunity to hit a man who thinks himself a Cubs fan. However, a large number of Cubs fans travel to U.S. Cellar to see the annual cross-town rivalry. After the sixth inning of every game, a wave of disinterest will break out in the stands, indicating that “I don’t care, I’m not watching.” They do, however, have the most well-known fan in the United States. This year, they made it to the postseason for the first time, and the fans showed up in droves, selling out both ALCS games thus far. They don’t have a very good overall attendance ranking (20th), but they do play in one of the smaller MLB markets. The team does a fantastic job of reminding its supporters of the franchise’s rich history on the field. The Reds Hall of Fame is one of the more interesting exhibits at a baseball complex. Pete Rose, as well as the rest of the Big Red Machine period that began in the mid-1970s, is still spoken about at every game. The team has one of the most dedicated fan bases in all of baseball. An important factor in the team’s success has been the constant support they have received.

This year, they finished second in the Major League Baseball in terms of attendance, and the supporters have turned out in force for the postseason. It is clear that the white-towel-waving fans are exceedingly vocal and enthusiastic about their club. Many Philly supporters have been devoted for decades, and the team’s recent resurgence has been especially satisfying. They can be crazy, as evidenced by the fact that two separate supporters have run onto the pitch this season. They demonstrate why the mascot is known as the “Phanatic.”

Analysis: The Spending Patterns of MLB Fans

Despite the fact that “America’s Pastime” has fallen well behind football in terms of national appeal, Major League Baseball’s opening day is still one of the most anticipated “kickoffs” in any professional sports league. Opening Day in Major League Baseball, often regarded as the unofficial start of spring, has a long and illustrious history in the United States. We were particularly interested in seeing how Opening Day 2021 might affect consumer behavior, if Opening Day inspires fans to purchase more stuff than they do during the World Series, and how this year’s Opening Day compared to last year’s COVID-delayed event.

Does Opening Day boost market demand for MLB team gear?

We began by looking at demand on Amazon for all Major League Baseball clubs combined from January 2020 through Opening Day weekend in 2021, commencing in January 2020. The quick explanation is that Opening Day results in a significant boost in market demand for MLB club apparel and merchandise. The average daily demand increased by 116 percent during the week leading up to Opening Day 2021 (March 28 through April 3), compared to a regular day throughout the year. Here’s a look at the demand for MLB team merchandise on a day-to-day basis: As you can see, the demand for MLB club attire on April 1st, 2021 (Opening Day) was the greatest of any single day in our data since January 2020, surpassing both the Christmas shopping frenzy and Opening Day 2020.

Demand was stable once lockdowns began, but dropped precipitously after it was announced that the 2020 season would be postponed until next year.

Opening Day in 2021 will see an even greater growth in demand for baseball caps, which are the most popular item of MLB club attire in general.

Which MLB teams experienced the most demand on Opening Day 2021?

Following that, we wanted to discover which Major League Baseball teams had the greatest demand on Opening Day. The demand for caps for each individual team was examined over the week leading up to Opening Day in order to accomplish this. It should come as no surprise that the New York Yankees, the most powerful club in baseball, saw the highest demand of any team in our survey, with demand exceeding supply by a wide margin. The Los Angeles Dodgers, the defending World Series champions, finished a distant second.

  2. In order to determine this, we looked at the average daily demand throughout the week leading up to Opening Day and compared it to the average day on the whole.
  3. When compared to a regular day throughout the rest of the year, demand for tickets to see the Royals and the Angels increased by approximately 150 percent.
  4. The San Francisco Giants, who haven’t played a home game yet, have had the least rise in demand of all of the teams.
  5. We also compared the demand for team hats on Opening Day 2021 to the demand for team hats on Opening Day 2020 in order to have a better understanding of which fans are the most (or least) enthusiastic about their teams.
  6. Padres and Tigers fans are likewise more hopeful this season, with demand for tickets increasing by more than 150 percent when compared to Opening Day 2020.
  7. The Washington Nationals, who were forced to postpone their opening game of the season owing to a COVID-19 outbreak on the team, reported a 30 percent decline in demand as a result of the postponement.

Because Cleveland supporters were awaiting the team’s upcoming rebranding, the city’s demand dropped by 26%.

How much does a trip to the World Series increase demand?

Is the World Series having an impact on demand? In this case, everything is quite basic. Yes, it is correct. Alot. To give you an example, below is the weekly demand for caps for the Tampa Bay Rays, who finished second in last year’s World Series: It is clear that demand increased by over 700 percent as a result of the Tampa Bay Rays reaching the World Series this year. And, as we shown in the preceding section, that enthusiasm has translated into a 213 percent spike in demand at the start of this season, which is expected to continue.

Consider the following comparison of the top five selling clubs, including the Tampa Bay Rays: During the World Series, Dodgers hats had the highest demand of any club hat at any period since January 2020, surpassing all other teams combined.

To further demonstrate how popular the Yankees are, their Opening Week attendance came within striking distance of matching the demand for Dodgers tickets during last year’s World Series.

A lesson for brands

Our data reveals that the anticipation around Opening Day (particularly this year following the COVID-condensed season in 2020) is fueling large spikes in demand for MLB club merchandise as fans want to convey their enthusiasm and excitement for their favorite teams. Consumer behavior is influenced by a variety of factors, and understanding these aspects may help firms better estimate demand for their products on online marketplaces, as well as inform product design and marketing strategy. 10. Atlanta Braves

The Braves’ winning streak in the 1990s—eight consecutive division crowns, five National League championships, and one World Series championship—as well as their merchandise’s rise to become some of baseball’s most popular items. It also served to draw attention to the team’s Native American-themed uniforms, which were largely seen as insulting. The franchise has since discarded its laughing Indian emblem, and during the playoffs of the previous season, it initiated a campaign to eliminate the use of the tomahawk chop in the ballpark, which has been successful.

9. Philadelphia Phillies

Following signing with the Washington Nationals last year, sales of right fielder Bryce Harper’s jersey established a new record for any sport and for any player during the first 24 hours after his signing, helping the team’s products rank among the best-selling in the league. Phillies supporters, on the other hand, are a famously difficult bunch. Following a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park in late September, Phillies fans booed Harper and the club for not winning by a larger margin, causing former utility player Sean Rodriguez, whose home run won the game, to dub them “entitled” in the press.

8. Cleveland Indians

The Indians removed their racially insulting caricature Chief Wahoo from their jerseys last year, but the character continues to appear on goods marketed to fans, despite protests from Native American organizations. In each of the last three seasons, the team has finished in the top three of the Major League Baseball’s local television ratings. The Indians’ social media following (2.4 million) much exceeds the population of the greater Cleveland region, and the team is frequently cited as one of the most early users of social media in all of sports, having established a dedicated social media section in Progressive Field.

7. San Francisco Giants

Fans of the New York Giants threatened a boycott in 2018 after learning that one of the team’s owners, Charles B. Johnson, had donated to the Senate campaign of Mississippi Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith, who made national headlines for comments regarding the practice of public hangings, as well as other racist remarks. The Giants and Johnson then made comments in which they denounced her campaign and her use of racist language. Last season’s attendance set a new low, yet it is still among the top 10 in the league.

6. Milwaukee Brewers

Despite being in the league’s smallest market and having only reached the league championship series three times in 52 seasons, the Milwaukee Brewers routinely rank in the top 10 of the league in terms of attendance, according to Baseball America. According to club president Rick Schlesinger, the retractable roof of the ballpark makes it a popular travel destination for visiting team supporters. The custom of sixth-inning Racing Sausages grew so popular that two-thirds of Major League Baseball teams started their own mascot races.

Nationals Park is home to the Washington Nationals.

5. Los Angeles Dodgers

Among Los Angeles residents, there are more Dodgers fans than there are supporters of any other club in the city, including the NBA’s legendary Los Angeles Lakers. Despite the fact that the club’s tickets are among the most costly in the league, the team ranks towards the top of the league in terms of attendance. Since 2010, the Dodgers have boosted the average price of their season ticket package by upwards of 90 percent, while the average price of individual tickets has grown to $43 from $25 during the last five seasons.

One issue that arises when a large number of supporters attend a game is security; fights that have erupted at games have been the subject of recent lawsuits.

4. New York Yankees

The Yankees finished the decade without appearing in a World Series, a sort of losing skid that the franchise had experienced just once before in its 117-year history, during the previous decade. The Bronx, on the other hand, continues to hold a tremendous allure. When it came to secondary market prices, they remained at or above league average, and tickets were as popular as any in the city among tourists. Yankees apparel continues to be among the most popular not just in Major League Baseball, but also across all sports.

3. St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals concluded the season with the top television ratings and the largest attendance in Major League Baseball. However, there are hints of trouble in Redbird Nation, which prides itself on being the “greatest baseball fans in the world.” A playoff game at Busch Stadium in October failed to sell out for the first time since the stadium’s construction began in 2006; less people attended the game versus the Braves, Game 4 of the National League Division Series, then a normal regular-season game at Busch Stadium.

Additionally, according to Nielsen, the proportion of inhabitants who identified as fans has decreased 10 percentage points from a high of 76 percent in previous years.

2. Chicago Cubs

Cubs fans continue to express their gratitude for the team’s World Series victory in 2016, which ended a 108-year drought and ended the team’s 108-year drought. Since then, the squad has consistently been in the top five in terms of attendance. Its social media following has more than doubled, reaching 5.9 million, and is more than twice the size of the Chicago White Sox, who play across the street. Following an in-game report on the team’s local NBC partner in May 2019, a fan was banned for life from Wrigley Field.

1. Boston Red Sox

For more than eight weeks, starting on March 26, when the Red Sox were supposed to open the season, Fenway organist Josh Kantor has been streaming Take Me Out to the Ballgame and other ballpark favorites to a growing global audience of Red Sox fans, which has grown to more than 8,400 people from all over the world. One of the reasons the stadium is considered family-friendly is because of his practice of accepting Twitter requests from fans, which began in 2011. The Red Sox were also named to Forbes’ list of America’s most ardent sports supporters, which included the New York Yankees.

Torii Hunter’s recent claims that he was the victim of racist taunts when playing for the Boston Red Sox prompted the Red Sox to acknowledge that they still have a lot of work to do in order to rid their fan base of racial slurs and hate speech.

Methodology

The following quantitative consumption metrics are used to rank MLB’s most devoted fan bases: local television ratings (per Nielsen), stadium attendance based on capacity reached, secondary ticket demand (per StubHub), merchandise sales (per Fanatics), social media reach (based on the team’s metro area population on Facebook and Twitter), and hometown crowd reach (defined by Nielsen as a percentage of the metropolitan area population that watched, attended, and/or bought merchandise).

Because Nielsen only provides data for the United States, the Toronto Blue Jays were unable to provide television statistics; nonetheless, the team was not penalized in the rankings as a result of the omission of that criterion.

Teams exceeding their capacity received the same consideration as if they had submitted a perfect report.

The merchandise was given out in exchange for units moved rather than cash paid.
