An ode to the 2017 Major League Baseball season: Year of the homers and juggernauts
Earlier this week, the 2017 Major League Baseball regular season came to an end. Unfortunately, there were no races that went down to the wire, and instead we were forced to sit and watch individual milestones on the last day of competition. Between Brett Gardner’s dive in against Chris Archerback on Sunday, April 2, and the last out on Sunday, there was a lot that transpired this season. This is by no means an exhaustive list because there is just too much that occurs during the course of the 2,400-plus games that make up the regular season, but let’s take a look back at some of the more significant stories from the season so far.
The month of Thames
It’s easy to say something along the lines of “time flies,” and it seems like it was just yesterday that the season got underway. In contrast, this nugget here provides a decent indication of how long the MLB season is in terms of hours and minutes each game. Consider this: remember when Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Eric Thames performed a Barry Bonds impersonation for a month or so? Thames batted.371/.483/.929 on his return to the majors after spending the previous season in South Korea. He also smacked 11 home runs in his first 20 games this season.
In addition, there were no gaps in his defenses.
He was supposedly getting tested for performance-enhancing drugs on a regular basis since he was so talented.
Thames had a decent season overall, despite the fact that it was substantially cooler than normal.
It is only the second time in the franchise’s existence that they have reached the century-win mark. As a result of their record start, they’ve also been able to coast through the American League West for the most of the season. They were really 4-4 during their first eight games, but then it was game over. The Astros would win 38 of their next 50 games, a record that still stands today. Over the course of the run, the team posted winning streaks of 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 11, and 11. The team’s 42-16 start was one of the finest in Major League Baseball history.
Their amazing offensive, led by a trio of MVP hopefuls in Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and George Springer, made them a lot of fun to watch as well as to play against. In addition, the same Astros went 21-8 in September and October, as previously stated. It’s possible that their work isn’t finished.
Court in session
Yankeesrookie Much of the season, particularly the first half, was dominated by Aaron Judge, who ignited baseball. After posting a.329/.448/.691 line with 30 home runs and 66 RBI coming into the All-Star break, the 6-foot-7 beast was dubbed “the toast of baseball.” It’s so simple for him to go to all of the fields, and because he has so much power, he can leave the yard without even completely “getting it” on a particular pitch. For a time, it appeared as though Judge might lead the majors in home runs and perhaps even crack the top 60.
Judge struggled after the All-Star break and continued to struggle into August.
He will be named American League Rookie of the Year, and he may even win the MVP award (though my bet is on Altuve).
The Dodgers struggled to get off to a good start this season, going 10-12 in their first 20 games. They would go on to win 10 of their next 12 games, but they would not get their stride until after they had lost three straight games from June 6 to June 8. They were tied at 35-25, which was a pretty excellent result. After then, though, things just progressed to the next stage of development. The Dodgers would subsequently win six straight games before suffering their first defeat of the season.
- They went on to win 11 games in a row a short time afterwards.
- They simply kept on winning.
- Between June 6 and August 26, the Dodgers won more games than nearly any other club in baseball history.
- For the purpose of comparison, that’s a 162-game winning streak with 135 (!) victories.
- Despite the disappointment that has followed, it doesn’t really matter at this time.
- What’s impressive about the Dodgers’ performance throughout this run is that they were dealing with injury hardship the whole time.
- Kenley Jansenis often considered to be the finest closer in baseball.
- For a brief period of time, Alex Wood was invincible.
- Yasiel Puighas has developed into a standout defender.
Justin Turner was on the attack. 390 people are expected by the end of July. Chris Taylor has developed into a stud. It’s just an extremely deep and skilled group of players. In some ways, they were the baseball team’s equivalent of The Terminator for a while.
Stanton’s smashing season
For years, we speculated about what Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton may be capable of if he could play a complete season without suffering an injury. The culmination of this process was witnessed, and it went into overdrive during the All-Star break. He finishes with 59 home runs and 132 RBI, which places him first in the majors in both categories. He has a good chance of winning MVP. Interestingly, Stanton “only” hit 21 home runs through his first three months of the season. The next month, he clubbed 12, then 18 in August, and finally eight in September.
This season will be remembered fondly unless Stanton manages to surpass it in the near future, which is completely plausible at this point.
The year of the home run
This season, it wasn’t only Stanton, Bellinger, and Judge who were on top of their games. Despite missing the first six weeks of the season, we witnessed J.D. Martinez hit 45 home runs in the regular season. We could give a slew of more instances, but this was unquestionably the year of the home run in baseball. With 12 days left in the season, the 2017 season established an MLB record for the most total home runs ever hit in a season. The record has been shattered, with 6,104 home runs being hit during the 2017 season.
Unfortunately, the winners of the six divisions were all rather obvious. I can personally speak to this because I properly anticipated all six of the questions and I didn’t even believe it would be difficult to do so. There were, however, a few of unexpected contestants in the running. In the end, the Brewers hung in there and weren’t even eliminated from contention until the second-to-last day of the campaign. What about theTwins, do you think? They are the only club in Major League Baseball history to reach the postseason despite losing more than 100 games in a season.
For the first time since 2009, the Colorado Rockies have advanced to the postseason.
Mega trades, even in August
In the MLB this season, teams were not afraid to make blockbuster transactions, and some of the most significant occurred as late as August, when waivers were involved. Justin Verlander has been pitching like an ace down the stretch for the Royals this season. Astros? A major shock to the system has undoubtedly been his absence from the Tigers outfit. He was also dealt at the last minute on August 31st, as well. That is just wonderful. There have also been trades involving major leaguers like J.D.
Martinez, Yu Darvish, David Robertson, and Jose Quintana. Going even farther down the list, there are Todd Frazier, Sean Doolittle, Ryan Madson, Jay Bruce,Neil Walker, Eduardo Nunez, Jaime Garcia(twice!) and a slew of other notable names. It’s been a crazy year in the trading world.
A winning streak of 22 games is the longest in baseball history, and it was achieved by the 2017 Cleveland Indians, who had won 22 games in a row. It wasn’t a freak occurrence. This is how good the Indians are. They weren’t even fully healthy throughout the run, with important players like as Michael Brantley, Andrew Miller, and Danny Salazar missing significant time due to injury. Over the course of their franchise existence, the Indians have won 102 games, second only to the 1954 Indians, who won 111 games during their inaugural season.
Since then, this has been one of their most successful squads.
The powerhouse playoffs
The Astros, Dodgers, and Indians have all been discussed. This season, all three clubs have won 100 games, making 2017 the sixth season in which three teams have achieved this feat. The Nationals have won 97 games in a row, which is another record. Since the All-Star break, the Cubs have gone 49-25 with a +127 run difference, making them the defending champions. Since the All-Star break, that record has been the best in the National League by four games. The Red Sox are the weakest American League division winner, but they won one of the hardest divisions and have shown to be a competitive team.
- There weren’t any standout races down the stretch, which may be attributed in part to the fact that the league has been dominated by the best drivers this season.
- The Nationals and Cubs, as well as the Astros and Red Sox, will be battling it out in the divisional series already this season.
- Each of the four series should be well-played, competitive, and dramatic in its own way.
- That’s some major ability there.
- This postseason has some great giants among its participants.
MLB Opening Day History
Baseball has been referred to be “America’s National Pastime” for more than a century, surpassing all other sports in popularity. In addition, no other game during the regular season’s one hundred sixty-two game schedule has elicited as much excitement as the first game of the season. Just take a glance at the calendar of any die-hard baseball fan. Vacation? Holidays? Anniversaries? All of these things are quickly forgotten and pale in comparison to the highly anticipated opening game of the season.
It’s likely that their response will be “Opening Day.” It is much more than a single event; it is a whole experience.
Due to inclement weather, they were only forced to debut on the road twice over this period (1877 and 1966).
However, despite being hailed as baseball’s opening act, Cincinnati has posted an average record of 50-52-1, which has been overshadowed by the countless spectacles that have taken place away from the field, including parades, fireworks, circus performances as well as the opening of new ballparks in 1884, 1894, 1912 and 2003.
- Since then, eleven sitting presidents of the United States have thrown out the ceremonial first pitch of the season.
- Truman, who demonstrated his ambidextrous abilities in 1950 when he threw out balls with both his right and left arms.
- In addition, “Teddy Ballgame” had at least one hit in each of the Opening Day games in which he appeared.
- Cleveland ace Bob Feller and Chicago White Sox hurler Eddie Smith battled head-to-head on Opening Day in 1940, making it one of the most legendary pitching matches in baseball history.
- When Hank Aaron tagged the Cincinnati Reds for his 714th career home run on his first swing of the 1974 season at Riverfront Stadium, he energized the fans, tying Babe Ruth for the all-time record and electrifying the whole stadium.
- Following a significant blizzard that preceded the opening of the 1907 season, the New York Giants took the field against the Philadelphia Phillies.
- Fans at the Polo Grounds became enraged when their team fell behind 3-0 and began tossing snowballs onto the playing field, disturbing the game’s flow.
Bill Klem, the home plate umpire, had had enough after being pelted with baseballs and declared a forfeit in favor of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The answer is that it isn’t all that much.
The Detroit Tigers, who won every Opening Day from 2009 through 2017, were tied with the Big Red Machine in 2018, but lost their position as the tenth best team in baseball.
Greg Maddux was a foregone conclusion on the mound, since he had a perfect 6-0 record in seven career starts.
Other perfect Opening Day hurlers include Wes Ferrell (6-0) and Lon Warneke (5-0).
Walter Johnson, probably more than any other player in baseball history, was the first to put on a uniform on Opening Day.
His two most illustrious starts are a 3-0 shutout of the A’s in 1910 and a 1-0 marathon triumph over Philadelphia’s Eddie Rommel in which he battled for fifteen innings.
That tiny extra thrill, that slight increase in pulse rate is all there is to it.
You’re well aware that once you’ve won the first one, you can’t possibly lose them all.” Regardless of the outcome, Opening Day continues to be the most important day of the year in the hearts and minds (as well as on the calendars) of baseball fans throughout the world.
ALSO, please keep in mind that the Opening Day game data presented below pertains to each specific team’s Opening Day game — which was played in their home ballpark.
Every club, every year, is required to play an Opening Day game, and when a team plays its first game at home, the data from that home opener is used to gather information for Opening Day study.

Cape Cod Baseball League Announces 2017 Schedule: New Opening Day & Return of Doubleheaders
CAPE COD, MAINE (December 5, 2016) — The city of Cape Cod is celebrating the holiday season with a parade. Two significant adjustments to the Cape League’s 2017 schedule have been authorized by the League’s Executive Committee as officials prepare for the next season. It has been decided that the 2017 season would begin one week later than prior seasons in order to better assist entering players’ transition between the conclusion of their collegiate season and the commencement of the Cape League’s summer schedule.
The season began on June 9 of the previous year.
During the 44-game regular season, each team will play two doubleheaders — one at home and one away – against the other.
“These adjustments were accepted by our Executive Committee in order to improve the Cape League experience for both players and fans.” ‘Beginning the season on June 14 will provide players with more time to finish their college season and be ready to play when the Cape Cod Baseball League season begins,’ said Commissioner Paul Galop of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
‘This summer, baseball fans will have the opportunity to spend an entire day watching the best of the collegiate crop battle for a shot at making it to the Major Leagues,’ Galop explained.
The 2017 Friendly’s All-Star Game and Home Run Hitting Contest will be held on July 22 at Clem Spillane Field, which has been the home of the WarehamGatemen since the 1960s, according to League officials in the release of the upcoming season schedule.
The National Football League has altered certain portions of the schedule, but many of the fan-pleasing elements will remain the same.
The Cape Cod Baseball League is comprised of the following teams: The Cape Cod Baseball League, the top collegiate summer league in the country, draws athletes from all over the country, representing all college levels, to compete in a 10-team loop.
The Cape League has its origins in 1885 and will be celebrating its 130th anniversary this year.
With more than 1,100 all-time alumni playing at all levels of professional baseball, the Cape League commemorated its 131st season by having a record number (292) of former Cape Leaguers on Major League rosters, including 13 who appeared in the 2016 World Series.
