Major League Baseball on Tuesday released its tentative 2016 regular-season schedule, which begins with the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game on April 3 with a matchup to be announced and includes 13 games on the first convergence of Opening Day and Square Root Day, which occurs on April 4, 2016. The schedule will be finalized later this week. In addition to the regular opening game at Cincinnati (versus Philadelphia), there are six divisional meetings and an Interleague game between the home Royals and New York Mets scheduled for that first Monday.

The following is a rough timetable for the year 2016.

  • Aside from Jackie Robinson Day on Friday, April 15, Mother’s Day on May 8 and Father’s Day on June 19, as well as the opening day of the 2016 MLB Draft on Thursday, June 9, there are several more notable events to remember in 2016.
  • The Padres will travel to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays for the first time on July 25-27, marking the first time since the format’s inception in 1997 that a location-specific Interleague battle has taken place.
  • The American League East will face the National League West, the American League Central will face the National League East, and the American League West will face the National League Central.
  • The Cubs will open the season on the road for the 11th time in the previous 15 seasons, and will do so for the first time in their history as part of Interleague Play.
  • The Cubs last played a season-opening game in Los Angeles in 1960, when they faced the Dodgers.
  • The Red Sox have faced the Indians three times in the first game of the season, all at Fenway Park, in 1962, 1977, and most recently in 1979.
  • In addition to hosting the Reds (June 17-19), Cubs (September 9-11), and Cardinals (August 16-17), the Astros will also travel to Milwaukee and Pittsburgh for games against the Brewers and Pirates.
  • The Pirates will start the 2016 season at home against the Cardinals, matching two of the teams presently vying for the National League Central crown against one another.
  • Louis, for a three-game series.
