2016 World Series by Baseball Almanac
The 2016 World Series was the 112th edition of Major League Baseball’s World Series, and it was a best-of-seven playoff between the National League (NL) champion Chicago Cubs and the American League (AL) champion Cleveland Indians. It was the first time in postseason history that the two franchises had met. Corey Kluber created World Series history by striking out eight batters in the first three innings of Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday. On a single and two walks in the first inning, the Indians loaded the bases against Jon Lester, and Jose Ramirez’s single brought in a run.
- Perez’s two-run home run in the fifth inning made it 3-0 Indians in the fifth.
- Even though Andrew Miller had to pitch his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning, the Indians were victorious in Game 1 of the series, winning 6-0.
- Arrieta was unsuccessful.
- The Cubs jumped off to an early lead in the first inning when Kris Bryant singled and Anthony Rizzo doubled to bring Bryant home and give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.
- A single by Kyle Schwarber drove home Rizzo from second base and increased the Cubs’ lead to 2-0 in the second inning.
- Rizzo was intentionally walked again by Zach McAllister, and Zobrist tripled to bring Rizzo home.
- Arrieta maintained his excellent performance, walking only three hitters while holding the Indians without a hit through the sixth inning.
After allowing another single, Arrieta was replaced by reliever Mike Montgomery in the game.
As a result of the victory, the Cubs earned their first World Series game victory since 1945 and knotted the series at one game apiece.
The sole run of the game came on a Coco Crisp single in the seventh inning that drove home Michael Martinez from third.
The game was ended when Javier Baez was struck out swinging, putting the tying and winning runners in scoring position.
Game 4 began with a Dexter Fowler double to lead off the first inning and scored on Anthony Rizzo’s one-out single, but Kluber kept the Cubs to a single run through six innings before Francona gave the ball over to the bullpen to finish the game.
The following inning, Jason Kipnis hit a leadoff double and came home on Francisco Lindor’s single to tie the game.
A leadoff double and a one-out hit-by-pitch greeted Justin Grimm in the following inning before being relieved by Travis Wood, who enabled Kipnis to connect for his third home run of the season, putting the Indians in up 7-1.
Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez smacked a home run in the second inning of Game 5, but the Cubs, who were on the verge of elimination, rallied three runs in the fourth inning against Trevor Bauer.
Following that, Anthony Rizzo doubled and Ben Zobrist singled.
Following a strikeout by Jason Heyward, Javier Baez’s bunt single advanced Zobrist to third base, where David Ross’ sacrifice fly made it 3-1 for the Cubs.
During the seventh inning, with the tying run on second base, Maddon brought in Aroldis Chapman, who went the distance and earned his first save of the 2016 World Series by throwing 2.2 scoreless innings.
Score three runs in the first inning, all with two outs, and then hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to complete the comeback.
Game 7 of the 2016 World Series would go down as a classic, some calling it the greatest Game 7 in World Series history.
Dexter Fowler led off the game with a home run for Chicago off Kluber, becoming the first player ever to hit a lead-off home run in a World Series Game 7!
To start the fifth inning, Javier Baez hit a home run to center on the first pitch he saw to knock Kluber out of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Hendricks retired the first two batters.
This move, along with others throughout the series, would be highly criticized afterward, as it appeared to some that Hendricks was pulled out too soon.
David Ross committed a throwing error that allowed Jason Kipnis to reach base and put runners on second and third.
To atone for his blunders, the 39-year-old Ross hit a home run to center, in his final at-bat of his career, in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-3 game, becoming the oldest player to hit a home run in a World Series Game 7.
Maddon opted to use Aroldis Chapman, who had thrown 42 pitches in Game 5 and was used in Game 6 despite the fact that the Cubs had already built a large lead.
The next batter was Indians center fielder Rajai Davis, who unexpectedly hit a dramatic home run off Chapman, just barely clearing the left field wall and the left field foul pole, scoring Guyer.
During the delay, Cub right fielder Jason Heyward called his teammates into a weight room behind Chicago’s dugout and told them, “We’re the best team in baseball.
Kris Bryant then hit a deep fly ball to center, and Almora tagged up to second base, in what was called the “savviest baserunning play of the season.” After an intentional walk to Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist stepped up to the plate.
After another intentional walk to Addison Russell, Miguel Montero singled into left, scoring Rizzo and making the score 8=6.
Davis, following up on his eighth-inning heroics, lined a single to center, making it a one-run game.
Montgomery retired Michael Martinez with an infield grounder fielded by Bryant, who threw to Rizzo to end the game, series, and the Cubs’ 108-year world title drought.
The Cubs, playing in their eleventh World Series and their first sinc 1945, won their third championship and first since 1908, ending the longest world championship drought in North American professional sports history.
World Series
It is the championship series of the two major professional baseball leagues in North America, which are known collectively as Major League Baseball: the American League (AL) and the National League (NL), which are played postseason play-off series between champions of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL), which together constitute Major League Baseball. The World Series was established in 1903, following the conclusion of hostilities between the Netherlands and the newly constituted Allies of the World.
- The event drew a little more than 100,000 people, and the players’ half of the proceeds totaled somewhat more than $1,000 apiece.
- Since 1922, a seven-game series has been the traditional format.
- Montreal and Toronto were given major league clubs in 1969 and 1977, respectively, making them the first Canadian teams to compete in major league baseball.
- The American League’s New York Yankees have won the most series.
- Are you up for it?
The World Series name has been applied to a number of lesser-known baseball championships, including theJunior World Series, which is played between the champions of the International League and the American Association (both professional minor leagues in the United States), and theLittle League World Series, which is held annually and features international representation for teams of boys and girls ranging in age from 9 to 18 years old.

Cubs vs. Indians – Game Recap – November 2, 2016 – ESPN
A smile appeared on Kris Bryant’s face even before he touched the ball in Cleveland. Moreover, with his throw to first base for the last out, the torturous wait until the next year was finally ended. There will be no more Billy Goat, no more Bartman, and no more curses of the black cat. Fly the W in honor of a legion of fans who have been waiting a lifetime: Your Chicago Cubs are World Series winners. The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series since 1908, defeating the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in 10 innings in a Game 7 thriller on Thursday morning.
- They even had to wait an extra inning for rain to finally put an end to the drought.
- It actually occurred.
- “We were successful.
- I’ll tell you what, we’re world champs right now.
- Throughout the game, blue-clad Cubs fans who had traveled from Wrigley Field packed practically the entire lower deck behind the Chicago dugout at Progressive Field, chanting “Go, Cubs, Go!” amid the pouring down rain.
- The Cubs, who have been lovable losers for years, came dangerously close to losing this one as well.
- However, after teasing their supporters for yet another inning, the Cubs came right back after a 17-minute rain delay before the top of the tenth inning ended.
Davis drove in a run with a single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Mike Montgomery came in and closed it out at 12:47 a.m., and the party was on.
“This is a very magnificent game.
I still can’t believe we were able to pull it off after 108 years of planning “Zobrist said himself.
Since spring training, the Cubs have been considered World Series favorites, and they have led the majors with 103 victories this season.
It wasn’t long until Bryant, one of Chicago’s brightest rising talents, began to celebrate after collecting a grounder by Michael Martinezto third base and tossing it across the diamond at Rizzo for the game’s last out.
Zobrist had a career-high ten hits in the Series, a year after he contributed to the Royals’ World Series victory.
In addition, he put together the Boston Red Sox club that ended the city’s 86-year winning streak by winning the World Series in 2004.
“We don’t need to take a plane back home,” Epstein explained.
The president explained that he simply needed to remind everyone of who they were and what they had to endure in order to get to this point.
The Indians were one double-play grounder away from winning the 1997 World Series before falling to the Marlins in Game 7 of the World Series, which took 11 innings.
It stings because we care about them, but they must walk with their heads held high since they left nothing on the field; otherwise, they would be embarrassed “Francona said himself.
As the Indians suffered the same defeat as the Warriors, James and his colleagues were in a suite, pulling for them with all their might.
Dexter Fowler hit a two-run home run on Corey Kluber’s fourth pitch of the game, while the Cubs’ 23-year-old Javier Baez and 39-year-old Ross – who is poised to retire – each hit two-run home runs for the team, which led 5-1 in the fifth inning and 6-3 in the eighth inning.
Bryan Shaw, who gave up a leadoff single to Kyle Schwarber in the 10th inning, was charged with the loss in only the fourth Game 7 to go to extra innings in franchise history.
Joey Zobrist hit an opposite-field double past diving third baseman Jose Ramirez after being deliberately walked by the pitcher, Anthony Rizzo.
Later in the inning, Carl EdwardsJr.
In the process of taking control, Montgomery helped to spark a chaotic celebration on Chicago’s North Side.
“It actually happened: the (at)Cubs won the World Series.
Would you like to visit me in the White House before I leave?” President Barack Obama sent out a tweet.
On the 39,466th day after Orval Overall’s three-hit shutout won the 1908 finale in Detroit in a game that took 1 hour and 24 minutes – this recent Game 7 only took 4:24, not including the rain delay – they ascended to the pinnacle of baseball once again.
The Cubs were last champions in 1907-08, when Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance won consecutive championships for the franchise, which remains the only time this has happened in the team’s history.
This one was dedicated to Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, Ron Santo, and Billy Williams, all of whom were unable to go past the regular season.
The “nickle-dime folks” were Lee Elia and his friends, who spent countless wind-swept days in the Friendly Confines, watching defeat after defeat.
If you believe the legend of William Sianis, the Billy Goat Tavern owner who declared, after being forced to leave Wrigley Field with his pet during the 1945 World Series, “Them Cubs, they ain’t going to win no more,” you’re right.
And for Harry Caray, who assured fans following the 1991 season finale that “sure as God made green apples, the Chicago Cubs are going to be in the World Series someday,” it was a bittersweet moment.
“Everyone is going at it with their hearts in their mouths, blow for blow.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this was the first World Series in which no starting pitcher recorded at least one out in the seventh inning.
UP It is expected that the Indians will play their first spring training game against the Chicago Cubs on Feb. 26 at Chase Field in Mesa, Arizona.

The 2016 World Series (Video 2016)
Droughts always come to an end with rain. The cleaning removes any curses, superstitions, and implausible losses that have been placed on the person. The Chicago Cubs were able to snap their seven-year losing streak. Take to the air with the W. The Cubs have won the World Series for the first time since 1945. The 2016 Fall Classic was the culmination of a lengthy journey. Generations of families and friends gathered to reminisce about happy memories that had been rekindled by victory. The Cubs and their supporters were embarking on a new sort of adventure, and it was maybe the beginning of that journey.
The Cubs, led by Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Jake Arrieta, Dexter Fowler, Jon Lester, and World Series MVP Ben Zobrist, outplayed the Giants and Dodgers in a historically dramatic World Series to advance to the American League Championship Series against the Indians.
It would take a legendary rain delay, an inspirational speech, and an extra inning of baseball for the Cubs to defeat the Indians and win the World Series to cap a 103-win season with their first World Series championship.
I’m with you all the way.

Both the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians were attempting to end long title droughts as Game Seven of the 2016 World Series took place at Progressive Field in Cleveland. For the first time in 108 years, the Cubs had failed to win a World Series, and “The Curse” remained to hang over their heads. For a long time, Cubs supporters held Steve Bartman responsible for the team’s failure in the National League Championship Series in 2003. Others said that a black cat ran in front of the Cubs’ dugout during the 1969 season, causing them to lose their cool.
An effort by a fan to smuggle a goat into the 1945 World Series was foiled before Game Four of the series was even completed.
For the Indians, it had been 68 years since they had won a championship.
Rocky Colavito was moved from the Cleveland Indians to the Detroit Tigers only a few days before the start of the 1960 season.
The trading of Colavito became a convenient scapegoat for their subsequent failures from that point on.
The Indians have a 1-0 lead.
Mickey Lolichin 1968, while pitching for the Detroit Tigers, became the last pitcher to win three games in the World Series.
As the Cubs’ Dexter Fowler hit a leadoff home run, he made history by being the first player in MLB history to do so in a Game Seven of the National League Championship Series.
A sacrifice fly by Addison Russell and a double by Willson Contreras sent the Cubs back into the lead in the top of the fourth inning, giving them a 3-1 advantage.
This is when Francona withdrew Kluber from the game and brought in Andrew Miller to replace him.
Miller, on the other hand, struggled in this game, walking Kris Bryant and allowing Anthony Rizzo to hit a single that scored Bryant, bringing the score to 5-1.
Hendricks had only allowed one run in 63 pitches, yet he had only thrown 63 pitches total.
It was his hubris that he was attempting to put his stamp on what was about to take place.” 1 Lester entered the game with barely two days’ rest after starting and winning Game Five following six innings of solid performance.
David Ross, Lester’s normal catcher, accompanied him on the trip.
Kipnis advanced to second and Santana advanced to third on the play.
In the fifth inning, both Santana and Kipnis scored, and the Cubs won 5-3.
David Ross hit a solo home run in the seventh inning of Game Seven of the World Series, making him the oldest player to do so in the series’ history at 39 years and 228 days.
The eighth inning was when things began to alter.
As part of his bullpen overhaul, Cubs manager Joe Maddon added Aroldis Chapman, who subsequently expressed dissatisfaction with his use during the World Series.
Rajai Davisnow stepped up to the plate in a critical circumstance.
As soon as the ball crossed the goal line, the Cleveland supporters exploded in applause.
During the third round, Davis exclaimed with his tongue, clearly pleased with himself.
As the Cubs prepared to bat in the top of the tenth inning, heavy rain began to fall, prompting the game to be called due to weather conditions.
As a result of the brief delay, the Cubs held a meeting in their locker room with only their players in attendance.
He was mostly concerned with getting the squad back on track after blowing a three-run lead.
Don’t let your guard down.
It’s about everyone working together to accomplish something.
We needed 114 victories, and I informed them that everyone in this room, right now, was committed to getting us to that number.” 3 Heyward’s words of encouragement were just what the squad needed to win.
The entire squad participated in a no-holds-barred game.
We wouldn’t be where we are now if it weren’t for the team.
4 The rain delay came to an end shortly after the conference concluded.
In fact, Schwarber was not even scheduled to be playing in this game, and he was not even expected to be playing at all in the 2016 season after injuring ligaments in his leg during spring training.
As soon as he learned that he would be returning to assist the Cubs in breaking their curse, he admitted that he would “certainly weep at some time today.” 5 Schwarber was represented by Albert Almora Jr.
Rizzo was intentionally walked, and the batter was Ben Zobrist, a switch-hitter who had gone hitless in the first three innings of the game.
(Zobrist was awarded the World Series MVP title as a result of this play in the game.) Following Zobrist’s hit, Addison Russell was deliberately walked to end the game.
The Cubs took an 8-6 lead when Rizzo scored.
With the Cubs three outs away from ending their 108-year World Series championship drought, manager Joe Maddon summoned pitcher Carl Edwards Jr.
When Edwards had gotten the first two outs, he walked Brandon Guyer, who stole second base as a result of defensive apathy.
With a runner on first and two outs, Maddon removed Edwards from the game and replaced him with Mike Montgomery.
He was facing the hitter.
Martinez hit a dribbler toward third base with one strike remaining in the inning.
They were crowned World Series winners in 2016.
