How Much Is A Jose Canseco Baseball Card Worth

10 Most Valuable Jose Canseco Baseball Cards

In the late 1980s, Jose Canseco baseball cards were a huge hit, with collectors flocking to buy them. By 1989, he had already won the World Series, been named MVP, and been named to three All-Star teams. He and his teammate “Bash Brother,” Mark McGwire, appeared to be on the verge of becoming the greatest slugging combo in baseball history at the time. After all, the baseball card craze of the time period would come crashing down, and we’d later find that he was involved in the PED scandal that shook the league.

And in this guide, I’ll go through the top ten most important ones.

For the sake of clarity, I’d like to point out that all of the cards on this list were released in 1991 or earlier.

However, I wanted to draw a line somewhere, and I decided that 1991 would be a decent place to do so because the majority of people will be able to relate with his cards from that time period.

1984 Chong Modesto A’s5

PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $500. The Sequoia Market in Ceres, California, was owned and operated by the Chong family from 1955 until its closure in 2005. From 1975 through 2004, the Class A affiliate of the Oakland A’s played in Modesto, California, which was less than 5 miles away from the Oakland stadium. A number of promotional baseball cards featuring the local baseball club have been made by the Chong firm over the years, with Jose Canseco making an appearance in the 1984 set. In today’s market, a top-grade Minor League card like this may command hundreds of dollars.

1991 Donruss Elite3

PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $500. In our pastime, there are select sets that stand out as being the first to establish a trend, and the 1991 Donruss Elite set is one of such sets. These inserts, which were only available in print runs of 10,000 apiece, are now widely regarded as the first cards to have serial numbers to indicate their relative scarcity. Donruss was able to distinguish itself from its competitors at the time because of this innovative approach in a market that had grown severely congested.

1986 Topps Traded20T

Tiffany PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $250. PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $40 on a base level. It is one of the most iconic sets of the decade, with its team names printed out in huge, block letters above the thick black border that runs across the top of the cards. Even though Canseco was not included in the standard 1986 Topps set, he was included in the 1986 Topps Traded collection along with other notable players like as Bo Jackson and Barry Bonds. The vivid blue sky in the backdrop, along with the green and yellow of his Oakland A’s shirt, creates a striking visual contrast that draws the attention.

High-grade copies of the regular edition will be worth roughly $40, while the Tiffany version, the premium factory set that Topps released that year, can be for as much as $250 or more in top condition, depending on the quality of the card.

1991 Topps Desert Shield700

PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $200. To make matters more difficult, the Desert Shield set from 1991 has a fascinating backstory, making it one of the more difficult sets to collect in the contemporary age. When the Persian Gulf War broke out in 1991, a limited quantity of them were delivered to soldiers stationed in foreign countries. In addition to the small number of sets that were produced, even fewer were able to remain in high quality due to the amount of damage they were subjected to during a military war.

Because of the difficulties of locating them in excellent quality, they may be rather pricey.

1991 Topps Desert Shield390

PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $200. Canseco received Silver Slugger honors and was selected to his fourth All-Star game in 1990 after hitting 37 home runs and driving in 101 runs during the regular season. As a result, he appears on the 1991 Topps Desert Shield set, where he is a member of the American League All-Star team. Both of his cards in this set look to be about equal in value in high grade, which is a rare occurrence.

1986 Donruss39

PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $150. The 1986 DonrussRated Rookie card, which is perhaps Canseco’s most iconic rookie card, remains to be one of the most sought for rookie cards of all time. One of Canseco’s head shots dominates the card’s front, which is framed by the card’s signature stripes on the sides and bottom. Canseco hit 33 home runs and drove in 117 runs in his first full season in the Major Leagues, earning him the American League Rookie of the Year honors in the process. That season catapulted him into the limelight, and this card became an essential must-have at that period in the history of the hobby.

1987 Topps620

Tiffany PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $150. PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $40 on a base level. Canseco made his debut in a Topps base set in 1987, when the company debuted cards with the instantly identifiable woodgrain borders that are still in use today. Topps strategically placed the All-Star Rookie trophy in the bottom-right corner of this card, giving it a noticeable visual boost. In the 1980s, this card and the sight of a young Jose Canseco slumped down in the dugout became one of the most recognizable images in sports.

1986 Fleer649 Major League Prospects

PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $100. Fleer featured Canseco and his teammate, Eric Plunk, in its 1986 issue as part of a subgroup titled “Major League Prospects,” which contained Canseco and Plunk. Canseco is the main attraction on this card, despite the fact that Plunk had a distinguished career as a relief pitcher, particularly as a set-up man with the Cleveland Indians in the 1990s.

It is common for the dark blue borders of this card to exhibit signs of wear and chipping, which prevents it from reaching PSA 10 rating.

1986 Donn Jennings14

PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $100. The Hunstville Stars were once the Double-A affiliate of the Oakland A’s until being acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1999. The team was founded in 1985 and played in the California League. The 1986 Donn Jennings Southern League All-Stars was a 25-card set that featured Jose Canseco as well as other notable players from the league at the time, including Tom Glavine, Bo Jackson, and Mark McGwire. Featuring a picture of Canseco marching boldly across the field, the front side of this baseball card features the MVP award sitting above him.

1983 Fritsch Madison Muskies43

PSA 10 is estimated to be worth $75. Last but not least, we have a Minor League issue featuring Canseco as a member of the Madison Muskies, the Oakland A’s Class A affiliate from 1982 to 1993, which is the final item on our list. It was one of a number of cards produced by Fritsch Cards of Stevens Point, WI, for their 1983 Midwest League Stars of Tomorrow series, which included a number of players from the Midwest League. Originally consisting of clubs from Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, as indicated by the tri-state emblem in the lower-right corner of the card; currently the league includes teams from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky as well as the three original Midwest League states.

Jose Canseco’s Legacy

Canseco’s legacy is one of the most complex of any baseball player in history, and it is one of the most difficult to understand. He was one of the most exciting sluggers in the game during his early playing days in Oakland, and he appeared to be on his way to a Hall of Fame career when he became the first member of the 40/40 club. Throughout the 1990s, he hopped about from club to team, and while he was still hitting for power, he wasn’t quite the household name he had been in the previous decade.

Despite the controversy that has surrounded him, Canseco has amassed an impressive record of accomplishments, which includes the following:

  • Rookie of the Year in the American League in 1986, MVP in 1988, 6x All-Star, 4x Silver Slugger, and two-time World Series champion

Canseco’s legacy will forever be tarnished by his use of performance-enhancing drugs, but it cannot be denied that he is still a significant figure in the sport, having emerged as one of the superstars of the 1980s. It is because of this recognition that his cards continue to be on the radar of many current sports card collectors to this day.

The Value of a Jose Canseco Rookie Card

A Jose Canseco rookie card will send you into a trance and transport you back to the 1980s. Moreover, it was not a flashback of a baseball card, but rather the swing of a muscled-up, enormous baseball player. If you grew up watching baseball in the late 1980s, the Jose Canseco swing is forever etched in your memory as one of the most fantastic, violent, and massive hacks in the history of the game. I’m not sure I can disagree with the title of this video, which is “The Swing From Hell.” Jose Canseco is known for a variety of accomplishments, but his very colossal baseball hack will stand out above all others as the most enduring Canseco memory.

  • From 1985 through 1992, he played with the Oakland Athletics, where he was named Rookie of the Year, earned the Most Valuable Player Award, and was named to six All-Star teams.
  • After each of them hit a home run, they celebrated by banging their forearms against each other, earning them the moniker “Bash Brothers.” The use of performance-enhancing drugs by Canseco and other players during his period would be revealed later on.
  • This man has the ability to pound the baseball out of the park.
  • They were interested in seeing how far the ball would travel.

The Young Jose Canseco Journey

He and his twin brother, Ozzie Canseco, who is also a former major league baseball player, were born in Havana, Cuba, where they grew up. In 1965, when Jose was nine months old, the family left Cuba for the United States and settled in Miami, Florida. During his junior varsity and varsity baseball seasons in high school, Jose would go on to be awarded the team’s Most Valuable Player on several occasions. Canseco was selected by the Oakland A’s in the 15th round of the 1982 Major League Baseball draft.

His big home runs, which he hit while playing in the Minor Leagues, made him a household name. During his time in the minor leagues, he was named Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year in 1985, and he made his Major League debut later that year.

Major League Baseball Career

In his first full season with the Oakland Athletics, Canseco established himself as the team’s starting left fielder and designated hitter. By the All-Star break, he was leading the American League in home runs and runs batted in, but he hit a snag that stopped him from earning the American League’s RBI title. Despite the setback, he was named American League Rookie of the Year and won the title. After signing with the Athletics in 1987, Mark McGwire and his brother, Mark McGwire, formed the Bash Brothers, two of the largest and deadliest home run sluggers in baseball.

Power, Speed, and a Household Name

With his 42 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season during the 1988 season, Canseco became the first player in baseball history to achieve the “40-40” milestone, which was achieved by just a few of players. They symbolize an unique baseball combination: home run power combined with baserunning speed on the basepaths, which is extremely unusual in baseball. A smash brother with power, speed, and an enviable reputation that was becoming known in nearly every family throughout the country, Canseco was a force to be reckoned with.

Jose Canseco’s gigantic moonshot of a home run in the 1989 American League Championship Series in Toronto’s Skydome helped propel him to the rank of “household name.” Despite Canseco’s injury absences, the Oakland A’s won the World Series in 1989, despite the fact that the team played in 97 regular-season games.

Conseco continued to earn trophies and set all-time team records with the Athletics throughout his nine-year tenure with the organization, which spanned 1986 to 1992.

Texas Rangers

Canseco was dealt to the Texas Rangers in 1992, which took everyone by surprise because he was considered to be one of the top players in Major League Baseball at the time. After suffering injuries for the most of his two seasons with the Texas Rangers, he was voted The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year. As a result of his trade to the Boston Red Sox in 1995, Canseco continued to be a good player while on the field, but he struggled with injuries that kept him out of many games throughout the 1995 and 1996 seasons.

Boston, Oakland, Tampa Bay, New York, Anaheim

In 1997, Caseco returned to the Oakland A’s, bringing the Bash Brothers back together for a brief period of time. Despite having a strong season, Jose was sidelined by a back ailment that forced him to miss many games. In 1993, after three seasons as a designated hitter, he moved to the outfield more frequently. In 1998, he signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays to play outfield.

After 151 games, his most in six years, he hit a career-best 46 home runs with 107 RBIs, 29 stolen bases, and 98 runs scored. He also set a career high with a total of 151 runs scored. Canseco received his fourth Silver Slugger Award of his career in 1998.

Jose Canseco’s Retirement from Major League Baseball

Canseco agreed to a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after having an outstanding season overall. He had a back injury before the mid-summer classic and was forced to miss the rest of the season while recovering from back surgery. Jose was selected as a starting designated hitter for the American League All-Star squad by the fans. Canseco became the 14th player in Major League Baseball history to blast 30 or more home runs before the All-Star break on Tuesday. Canseco competed in the MLBPA Big League Challenge home run derby in Las Vegas prior to the start of spring training in 2000, defeating 12 other sluggers in the process.

Canseco was victorious in the competition.

Despite this, he was plagued by injuries throughout his Major League Baseball career.

Jose Canseco Rookie Cards

While Jose Canseco had a tremendous Major League Baseball career and was a fearsome homerun slugger, his baseball career was ultimately overshadowed by his use of performance-enhancing drugs. Furthermore, throughout the late 1980s, the baseball card market was undergoing a bubble of its own. As the Topps monopoly came to an end and new firms began creating a large number of new sports cards, the value of sports cards and the interest of collectors began to decline. As a result, many baseball cards created during this time, known as the Junk Wax era, were mostly forgotten for several decades after their publication.

Especially in recent years, when sports cards have experienced a resurgence in popularity.

The First Jose Canseco Rookie Card

The majority of people believe Jose Canseco was a first-round draft selection who went right from high school to the major leagues, as has been the case with so many previous baseball heroes. However, his ascent to superstardom was more difficult than you may expect. Jose was sent to the minor levels after being selected in the 15th round of the MLB draft. With the Miami Marlins of the Florida State League, and the Medford A’s and Madison Muskies of the Pacific Coast League, as well as the Modesto A’s, Idaho Falls A’s, and Tacoma Tigers, he had a successful professional baseball career.

He then moved on to the Huntsville Stars of the American Hockey League.

Jose Canseco Topps Rookie Cards

Rookie of the Year The Jose Canseco 1987 Donruss Opening Day card was included in the 273-card set that included players who were in the starting lineups on opening day in 1987, despite the fact that it was not officially his “rookie card.” The Canseco card is one of several noteworthy cards from the first day of the season, which also includes rookie cards of Bo Jackson, Will Clark, Barry Bonds, and Barry Larkin.

Fleer Jose Canseco Rookie Cards

A 1986 Fleer rookie “Major League Prospects” card of Jose Canseco is reportedly valued between $300 – $500, according to recent transactions on eBay for similar cards. Please keep in mind that these are documented transactions that have been completed, not merely asking prices—there is a significant distinction. Anyway, this Jose Canseco rookie card is fantastic. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that hot-shot prospect Eric Plunk is seated next to the future bash brother himself.

  1. Unfortunately, Eric Plunk does not receive any recognition.
  2. Please accept my apologies.
  3. Rookie Card #649 for Jose Canseco In addition to the six logo stickers included in the 1986Fleer League Leaders set,3 Jose Canseca is another card that has increased in value over the years.
  4. The Fleer Mini baseball card set is a 120-card collection that was first produced in 1987.

Finally, the 1987 Fleer Award Winners is a 44-card set that includes players who have received a variety of major league awards throughout their respective careers. A Jose Canseco baseball card from this collection is currently worth $100, according to the market. Fleer was founded in 1987. In addition to being the first to print serial numbers on each card, they were also the first to do so, highlighting the rarity of the set and boosting its overall popularity and value.

If you can find a panel of all four cards that has not been cut, the values will be higher than if you cut them out individually. Card collections in good condition are extremely difficult to come by, as you can imagine. 1987 Jose Canseco is the leader of the Topps Mini League.

Other Valuable Jose Canseco Collectibles

Even though many stickers have not been recognized greatly over the years, there are a few Jose Canseco stickers that are well worth acquiring. A Jose Canseco Red Foley Sticker14 PSA 10 Pop 1 from 1990 is a rare discovery that is worth more than $100. Also available is a very rare and valuable 1988 Jose Canseco Panini Sticker, which may be found here.

1988 Topps Cloth Test Team Leaders

According to lore, Topps decided to create a test printing of the 1988 Topps Team Leaders card, which featured Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco, to see how it would turn out. Only 50 of the cloth sheets were manufactured, and the instructions on the sheets state that they are “not for sale.” No, I haven’t seen the Topps test cloth printing in person, but according to accounts, there were 121 “cards” created that were designed to somewhat replicate the normal 1988 Topps cardboard set. If you happen to come across one of these fabric test printings in the wild, I strongly advise you to add it to your 1980s memorabilia collection.

Jose Canseco Collectible Coins

Topps coins, which are 1.5 inches in diameter and show a full-color photograph of the player, as well as the player’s name, team, and position, are among the most valuable collectibles available. A Jose Canseco 1987 Topps Coins Card in PSA 10 Gem Mint condition may get upwards of $300. Finally, there are Topps stickers, which come in a variety of designs and are available in a variety of rarity levels. These stickers may be worth a lot of money depending on their rarity and design. A Jose Canseco Topps Super Star Sticker from 1990 might be worth anywhere from ten to twenty dollars.

Jose Canseco Kenner Starting Lineup Cards

Jose Canseco is far from being a flawless player. He’s made a number of pretty public gaffes in the past. Even if he appeared to have taken ownership of them, this would not excuse his actions. After everything is said and done, everyone has something in their history that they would most likely wish to alter. This half of the bash brother pair strikes me as a pleasant, extremely human, and undeniably amusing parody of baseball history from a historical perspective. Jose Canseco is a player who has stood the test of time.

Over half a million people follow his Twitter account, which is where he is always selling new goods, ideas, and hypotheses on a wide range of issues. A former major-league slugger who has become a renaissance man. If you aren’t already following him, I strongly advise you to do so.

Still Entertaining Fans and “Haters” After All These Years

If we claim that Jose is continuously reinventing himself, we would be understating the case. The Jose Canseco rookie card will continue to be a part of baseball and American society for many years to come, whether you like it or not. Go ahead and follow Jose on Twitter now. Please remember to visit Jose’s car wash, where you may fill up your tank, wash your car, and pose for a photo with him. Jose Canseco wasn’t a fan of bunting in the first place.

Jose Canseco Rookie Card Review & Collector’s Guide

Are you looking to purchase a Jose Canseco rookie card? You’ve arrived to the correct location! In particular, we have 5 items in mind that you may still pick up for a reasonable price (a couple of which seem INCREDIBLY reasonable). So fasten your seatbelts and let’s get started!

Jose Canseco’s Impact on the Game

As you are aware, we have already explored the many Mark McGwire rookie card alternatives that are available. What about the other Bash Bro, on the other hand? It’s long past time to take a look at one of the greatest baseball villains to ever walk foot on a baseball field! Before we go any further, let’s take a look at what Jose was capable of prior to his purported blacklisting from the game. With 96 at-bats, Jose hit.305 with 5 home runs, a more than respectable mark for a first cup of coffee (with that small sample size, it was more like a shot of espresso!).

Jose achieved immediate notoriety in 1986, when he hit more than 30 home runs and drove in more than 100 runs in his first full season of professional baseball (numbers that were good enough to earn him Rookie of the Year).

He hit more than 30 home runs and drove in more than 100 runs in all but one season, 1990, which was cut short by injury.

So now that you have a better understanding of WHY you should be interested in purchasing a Jose Canseco rookie card, let’s move on to the topic of which one to purchase.

The Jose Canseco Rookie Card Power Pack

Okay, let’s start with the most collecting (and precious) member of the group: the aforementioned acorn. When it comes to the 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco rookie card, appearances may be misleading.

It shows a drab headshot of Canseco set against one of the most uninteresting Donruss backdrops ever created. However, with a current selling price of around $500 (for a grade 10) for this card, it is not one to be taken for granted.

1986 Donruss Rookies (Find Bargain on eBay)

The 1986 Donruss Rookies rendition, which comes from a subset of the collection we just reviewed, depicts Jose in the midst of what seems to be the beginning phases of the famed Canesco home run trot. Although this card looks to be more interesting on the surface, it is in fact far less valuable than the card that was originally released as part of the standard Donruss collection. As a result, if you’re wanting to save money, this is your best option.

1986 Topps Traded Tiffany (Find Bargain on eBay)

The 1986 Donruss Rookies edition, which comes from a subset of the collection we just reviewed, depicts Jose in the midst of what seems to be the beginning phases of the iconic Canesco home run trot. Although this card looks to be more interesting on the surface, it is in fact far less valuable than the card that was first released as part of the Donruss set. When it comes to saving money, this is your best bet for getting by.

1986 Fleer (Find Bargain on eBay)

We’ll wrap things out with a handful of Fleer cards to round out the list. As an example, take a look at Canseco’s card from the normal set, which has him alongside a shady-looking fellow prospect named Eric Plunk (we know Erik is a nice man, but the expression on his face is not a good one). Fortunately, it is not a difficult card to obtain; if you can get past ole’ Plunk, you will have obtained a card that should retain its worth.

1986 Fleer Update (Find Bargain on eBay)

Fleer’s second card comes from the “Update” collection, which was released earlier this year. As far as the look and border of this card are concerned, it’s fairly comparable to the ordinary version. However, there is one significant difference: Plunk is no longer included in the Update version (probably much too the delight of the lady collectors out there). Although neither of the Fleer cards will set you back a fortune, the original edition is the more desirable of the two cards. We can only presume that this has everything to do with the fact that it is extremely unusual and nothing to do with Erik Plunk himself.

Overall Bargain Rating:Room for Growth

Neither the rookie cards of fellow Bash Bro Mark McGwire nor the rookie cards of fellow 1986 rookie Barry Bonds are anything near in value to these cards. However, this is not necessarily a negative development. For starters, you won’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get your hands on one. For the second time, a sudden increase in the demand for Jose Canseco rookie cards may result in some spectacular gains if you opt to acquire at present prices. Canseco was instrumental in bringing the drugs issue to a close, had a relationship with Madonna, won three American League pennants, two World Series championships, and had a remarkable 40/40 season.

Aspects such as the athlete’s current relevance should ALWAYS be taken into consideration when selecting a new card.
