5 Things That Affect an Autographed Baseball’s Value

“How much is my baseball worth?” is a question I get asked almost every day. That is dependent on a variety of circumstances, including who signed it. For the sake of this post, I will only discuss how the actual baseball itself influences the worth of the baseball. Here are five things to keep an eye out for. 1 SPECIFIC KIND OF BALL Every autographed baseball signed by a current player should be on an official Major League Baseball baseball card, according to MLB. The official Major League Baseball, with the exception of the All-Star and World Series logo baseballs, is the baseball that everyone desires.

  • When at all feasible, use the official Major League Baseball ball.
  • Blue is a more vibrant hue that lasts longer and is much more noticeable.
  • The same technique can be done using a sharpie.
  • Nobody likes to see a smudge or a fading signature, and it’s much worse when it’s their own.
  • The higher the quality of the signature, the more desired it is.
  • 4 BASEBALL IN GOOD CONDITION With the exception of earlier autographed baseballs such as those signed by Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, and Mickey Mantle, every current player’s autograph should be on a clean, white baseball, unless otherwise specified.
  • The presence of staining or spots on the ball tends to detract from its value.

AUTHENTICATION is number five.

Authentication always increases the value of a baseball’s monetary worth.

For example, a Babe Ruth signed baseball that has been authenticated by one of those companies sells for significantly more money.

The presence of inscriptions on your signed baseball, such as a player’s year as MLB’s Most Valuable Player or the year he was named World Series MVP, can also increase the value of your item.

The reason behind this is because a ball with TO JOHN written on it is difficult to sell to someone called Matt!

Autographed Baseball Value – What Determines It?

It seems like every week, one of our sports memorabilia buyers asks me, “How do you assess the worth of an autographed baseball?” Here are ten critical considerations. 1.) The Athlete is a person who participates in sports. In general, the more well-known an athlete is, the greater the selling price of his or her merchandise. Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Albert Pujolsare all expected to command a higher price than Eric Hosmer and Lance Berkman in the near future. 2.) Achievements and distinctions If a player has won a World Series victory, an MVP or ROY award, or has just been inducted into the Hall of Fame, the price of his or her jersey will go up accordingly.

  1. A certificate of authenticity (COA) from a reputable organization such as PSA/DNA, JSA, or Major League Baseball has a great deal of weight in the business, and collectors are ready to pay extra for goods that have received such a certificate.
  2. 4.) The World Series or the MLB All-Star Game.
  3. Take, for example, the following: Pedro Martinez autographed a World Series baseball during the 2004 season.
  4. Another point to consider is that Rawlings discontinues production of World Series baseballs three years after the event, meaning that a 2004 baseball was last manufactured in 2007.
  5. 5.) Inscriptions on the wall.
  6. A baseball with an inscription such as “To Matt” on the other side will be considered low-quality and so devalued.
  7. A smeared signature or brown discoloration will always detract from the value of a piece of art.

All Major League Baseball balls, or if it’s a World Series ball, the ball should be autographed under the World Series emblem.

7.) The law of supply and demand.

Mariano Rivera is yet another outstanding illustration of this.

He would perform signings every 4 to 6 weeks or so, but the merchandise would always sell out in a matter of minutes.

Because of this, corporations boosted his pricing in order to take advantage of the advantageous market conditions that existed.

Purchasing a player’s signature immediately following a significant achievement (World Series championship, MVP award, Hall of Fame induction) will always result in a higher price for the autograph simply because collectors and fans’ emotions are running high.

9.) Is it better to be dead or alive?

That’s all there is to it.

It is no secret that players get compensated for signing their autograph.

Professional athletes like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera command high salaries.

Baseballs are normally on the more affordable end of the spectrum.

In addition, think about dealing with internet firms like ours, where our overhead is far lower and we can afford to sell products at a lower price. Comments will be reviewed and approved before they are shown.

Ask the Experts: How Much Is My Vintage Autographed Baseball Worth?

Is it possible to get your antique sports cards or memorabilia appraised? For example, do you have a baseball bat or a football jersey that you would like appraised? “Ask the Experts,” a new section in my column that will debut with this piece, is something I am really happy to promote. Please use the email tool provided above to give me photographs of your item as well as any relevant background information about it. Question: John Edwards, a goldsmith who lives in the San Francisco area and owns an online jewelry store, contacted me to ask for an evaluation of a vintage baseball signed by the Detroit Tigers that he had acquired through a friend.

  1. Baseball was one of my favorite sports.
  2. I came upon this autographed Tiger baseball.
  3. The fact that my uncle was such a nice person, and he handed it to me with pride that day, means that I’ve had it ever since.” An autographed baseball signed by the complete baseball team is one of the most iconic pieces of sports memorabilia ever created.
  4. It is possible to discover everyone, from Hall of Famers to obscure utility players who just had a cup of coffee, on a whole ball.
  5. In a recent piece, I discussed “clubhouse” signatures, which refer to team officials, such as clubhouse attendants, who would occasionally sign for busy ball players and managers in the olden days.
  6. As I mentioned in that piece, Ron Keurajian says in his reference guide,Baseball Hall of Fame Autographs, that one technique to spot defective team-signed balls is to check to see if the signatures do not overlap.
  7. It has been brought to my attention by a couple of former players that signing boxes and boxes of baseballs before games was a big headache.

If you’re a beginner, you should be especially cautious with replica baseballs, as I’ve talked about in a previous piece, “Buyer Beware: 10 Sports Memorabilia Items You Should Think Twice About.” Aside from the rather evident machine stamping, the fact that some of the signatures are piled perpendicularly to one another rather than vertically, as they are on real balls, is a dead giveaway.

  1. The good news is that your ball is a genuine piece of equipment: In terms of autographs, there are several good ones: Virgil Trucks, Dick Bartell, Johnny Groth, and Pat Mullin.
  2. Red Rolfe, a four-time All-Star for the New York Yankees, is a wonderful name, although it has become rather dated.
  3. Eddie Lake is always on the move.
  4. You can find out what day it is by jotting down all of the players’ names and searching up their rosters on the internet.
  5. Tigers’ balls from this era are worth $300 to $400 if they are in excellent condition.
  6. Overall, I would describe the condition as bad to fair.

Keeping them out of the sun and in a suitable container, such as a cube, that shields them from ultra violet radiation is recommended. As a precaution, avoid keeping valuable items in attics or garages, where high temperature variations can cause harm as well.

All Century Team Signed Baseball with 16 Signatures Including Williams, Koufax, Aaron, Mays, Ripken, and More (PSA/DNA)

This near mint to mint official American League baseball (President Bobby Brown) has been signed by 16 of the 18 members of Major League Baseballs All Century Team who were living in 1999 when that incredible team was named.Ted Williams had suffered multiple strokes by that time and had stopped signing baseballs, so the person who put this together started with a Ted Williams single signed baseball and then added Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn, Roger Clemens, Brooks Robinson, Willie Mays, Nolan Ryan, Johnny Bench, Stan Musial, Pete Rose, Cal Ripken Jr., Bob Gibson, Yogi Berra, Mike Schmidt, Ernie Banks, and Sandy Koufax.Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr. would complete this gem.A few of the signatures have minor smudges or bleeding, but many of the keys are perfect.Definitely a unique, fantastic piece that cannot be duplicated due to Warren Spahns passing (let alone cost and availability). The ball comes with a full PSA/DNA letter of authenticity, which includes a photo of the ball on the letter along with a matching numbered PSA/DNA authentication sticker on the ball. There is also a Steiner Sports hologram on the ball. For a limited time, we are offeringFREE FedEx shippingon all orders! We acceptall major credit cardsthroughour secure website, Paypal, or by phone.Click”Add to Cart”above to check out online or give us a call at(877) 472-1001to order by phone.

5. Estimates

The low and high estimates assigned to each item in the catalogue indicate the range of values that, in the judgment of Doyle New York, represents a reasonable and likely auction value for that particular property. Once a comparable piece of property, condition, uniqueness, quality, and provenance have been determined through prior auction records, the estimate is derived from them. The estimations are frequently made many months before a sale and, as a result, are liable to change based on more study into the property, changes in market circumstances, or changes in the value of a currency.
