- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon light Karo syrup
8-inch round cake pans are the container for this recipe.

FROSTING TECHNIQUES: (Double if making two cakes)

When you are through decorating the cake, carefully lift the wax paper from underneath the cake and discard it. When taking it out, carefully slide it back and forth as you draw it out for optimal results.

Baseball cake tutorial that is both simple and gorgeous! My baby boy turned one recently, and to celebrate, we threw him a birthday party with a baseball theme for him. I decided to make him a birthday cake, which, as you may recall, has had a negative impact on my reputation in the past. However, I chose a straightforward design and documented my progress with photographs so that you could see how I accomplished it. You can do it if I can do it, so can you! Cake Supplies Needed:
- Hot water, Betty Crocker Red Velvet Cake Mix, Betty Crocker Fluffy White Whipped Frosting, Wilton Red Sparkle Gel, round plastic lid (I used the cover from my Pampered Chef Batter Bowl), off set spatula, Betty Crocker Red Velvet Cake Mix
Step 1: Mix the Cake
Empty the box of cake mix into a mixing basin, but instead of adding the ingredients listed on the container, add four eggs, one-third cup melted butter, and one-cup milk. Mix until well combined. This will make your baseball cake taste more handmade and will give it a denser structure, which will be useful for stacking the two layers together in a baseball shape.
Step 2: Bake the Cakes
Pour the batter into two 8-inch baking pans that have been oiled and dusted and bake according to the package directions. Allow to cool fully on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Step 3: Prepare for Stacking
Each layer should have its rounded dome removed with a serrated bread knife to make a lovely flat surface on each cake.

Using a substantial amount of frosting, cover the entire cake (I used nearly an entire jar on this step). Working your way out and around the edges of the cake, make the frosting as smooth as possible by starting in the center and working your way out and around the sides. Nobody enjoys a dessert that has too little icing on it!
Step 7: Smoothing the Frosting
When smoothing the frosting, a Viva paper towel is sometimes used; however, I didn’t have any on hand, so I used my fingers instead. I merely filled a large pot with really hot water and dropped my offset spatula in it.
I would use it to smooth the frosting throughout the surface, applying only a small amount of pressure on the icing. Every few seconds, I dipped it into the water to clean it. This helped to keep the spatula hot while also adding just enough water to get a truly smooth surface.
Step 8: Marking the Baseball Laces
I used the lid of my Pampered Chef Batter Bowl to create the appearance of baseball laces, but you could use any circular, thin lid or bowl to achieve the same effect. To use as a guide for my piping, I gently pushed it into the icing (I think it would have been better to freeze it for a few minutes before doing this).
Step 9: Piping the Laces
In order to create a solid line, I used thered sparkling food gel, followed by the V laces. Just take it easy. My kid was waking up from his nap at the exact moment I was performing this step, and some of them suffered the price as a result of it. I also considered using the red pull-n-peel licorice for this purpose, but decided against it. However, considering my previous failures at making birthday cakes, I still believe it turned out fantastic. So don’t be intimidated by the prospect of hosting your next baseball party; instead, bake this ridiculously simple baseball cake!
