What Does Nlds Stand For In Baseball

Understanding the MLB Baseball Playoffs System

When the Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason begins, it signals the conclusion of the sport’s 162-game regular season, which normally begins the first full week of October. For baseball fans, it’s an exciting time of year when league leaders may fall apart and wild-card clubs can shock everyone. Ten teams advance to the postseason, with five from each of the American and National Leagues. The playoffs for each league are comprised of a one-game playoff between two wild-card clubs, two best-of-five Division Series playoffs (DS) including the wild-card winner and the winners of each division, and ultimately a best-of-seven League Championship Series (LCS) between the two division winners (LCS).

Wild Cards

The wild card system was originally used in 1994, when Major League Baseball increased the number of divisions in each of the American and National Leagues from two to three apiece. In each league, a wild-card squad was added to the playoffs, consisting of the team with the best record that did not win its division. Starting with the 2012 season, a second wild-card club was introduced. Exactly two days after the regular season comes to a conclusion, the two wild-card clubs square off in a winner-takes-all matchup.

During recent World Series playoffs, wild cards have shown to be a formidable opponent.

Within a Division: If there is a tie at the conclusion of the regular MLB season for any of the divisional or wild-card slots, a one-game playoff will be conducted the following day to determine which team goes to the postseason. If there is a tie for first place in a division and the losing club is certain to receive a wild card, there will be no one-game playoff to decide the winner. The division champion is determined by the team that wins the season series between the two teams. Inside the Series: If the teams split their seasonal series evenly, the team with the superior overall record within the division wins the championship.

It is possible that they will tie after 82 games, 83 games, and so on until they are separated by a single game.

Division Series (ALDS and NLDS)

The Division Series is a best-of-five series that takes place over five games. The club with the greatest overall record earns the top seed in the playoffs as well as home-field advantage throughout the tournament. It will host Games 1, 2, and 5 of the Division Series round and will play off against the wild-card team from the other league. The remaining two divisional champions will also face off against one another in a best-of-five best-of-five series.

That series’ home-field advantage goes to the team with the second-best season record; the club with the second-best season record hosts Games 1, 2, and 5 of the series. The League Championship Series will be played between the two winning clubs.

League Championship Series (ALCS and NLCS)

It is the Division Series champions who progress to the American League and National League Championship Series, which are also best-of-seven series. The home-field advantage will be awarded to the club with the best record in each league. If a wild-card club has a superior record than the other qualifying team that is a division champion, the division champion retains the advantage and hosts Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 of the championship series. The Milwaukee Brewers, who made the switch from the American to the National League in 1998, and the Houston Astros, who made the switch from the National League to the American League in 2013, are the only teams to have appeared in both the American League Championship Series and the National League Championship Series.

The World Series

The champions of the American League Championship Series and National League Championship Series progress to the World Series, which is a best-of-seven-game playoff. Prior to the 2002 season, each league had a rotating home-field advantage (games 1, 2, 6, and 7) that switched every year between the two divisions of baseball. A regulation change that year changed that method, awarding home-field advantage to the league that won the All-Star Game that year instead of the other teams. In 2017, the Major League Baseball modified the regulations once more.

The Major League champion is determined by the first team to win four games in a best-of-seven-game series against the other club.

In addition, it was Chicago’s first World Series championship since 1908.

History of the Playoffs

The inaugural World Series was contested in 1903, and the winners of the American League and National League met in a best-of-nine series, which was then the standard format. The Boston Americans (who would subsequently become the Red Sox) won the World Series that year. Two years later, the World Series was reduced to a best-of-seven matchup between the American and Japanese teams. When the American League and National League were separated into separate divisions in 1969, the American League Championship Series (ALCS) and National League Championship Series (NLCS) were founded, with four clubs making the playoffs.

Before the 2012 season, the playoffs were expanded to include a fifth club from each conference.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred stated in 2018 that he is considering expanding the league to 32 clubs, 16 in each league, which would allow each league to have four divisions. The elimination of the wild card and winner-take-all one-game playoff rounds might result as a result of this alignment.

How the Astros got here

The Houston Astros of the American League have had a long and weird journey thus far this season. Following their sign-stealing controversy and a sub-.500 finish in the truncated 2020 season, it was reasonable to question if Houston was actually as elite as their reputation would have you believe them to be. That response turned out to be a loud affirmative. First and foremost, the club defeated the Chicago White Sox in decisive way. Afterwards, they squared up against the suddenly resurgent Red Sox, who appeared to have them on the ropes after a flurry of home runs helped Boston grab a commanding 2-1 lead in the series.

The Astros, on the other hand, did not panic and were able to shut down the Red Sox’s hitters with relative ease in the following three games.

How the Braves got here

In the National League, theAtlanta Braves won three straight games in the National League Division Series after falling to the Milwaukee Brewers in the first game. After that, they’d be in line to face the winner of the San Francisco Giants – Los Angeles Dodgers series, a battle that would determine whether club had a historically good regular season the Braves would have to overcome in the postseason. They proved to be more than up to the task, beginning the series with a pair of walk-off victories in Atlanta and holding off a late charge by the star-studded Los Angeles Dodgers.

2021 MLB playoffs: Five things that must happen for Dodgers to come back from NLCS deficit vs. Braves

The Atlanta Braves have a 2-0 series lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series in 2021 after winning two games and two walk-offs. It is only the second time in baseball history that a club has won Games 1 and 2 of a League Championship Series on walk-offs, joining the 1969 Baltimore Orioles in the feat. Austin Riley and Eddie Rosario delivered walk-off hits for the Orioles, exactly as Paul Blair and Curt Motton did for the Orioles in their heyday. Braves manager Brian Snitker noted after Game 2 that his team had received “significant hits.” “I’m talking about all of them, Joc (Pederson), in Austin.

You may look at it both ways (Freddie Freeman won’t be able to keep striking out indefinitely, for example), but the Dodgers were competitive in both games until the final out.

A club that leads a best-of-seven series by two games to none has historically gone on to win the series 84 percent of the time.

It will be difficult, though, to defeat an 88-win squad four times in the following five games.

Los Angeles must overcome a 2-0 deficit to defeat Atlanta for the second consecutive playoffs. Here are the five things that must happen for the Dodgers to succeed.

1. Buehler dominates in Game 3

Los Angeles dropped Games 1 and 2 to the Braves in the National League Championship Series last year, but came out and scored 11 runs in the first inning of Game 3 to win the series. That was clearly an exception, and no one should expect something like that to happen again in the future. On top of that, the Dodgers got off to a strong start in Game 3 thanks to Julio Uras. After taking a commanding lead in the first inning, he surrendered just one run in five innings. The route to an NLCS comeback begins on the mound, with Walker Buehler shutting down the Braves in Game 3 to give the offense some breathing room and time to establish a lead.

Because he played Game 4 of the National League Division Series on short rest last Tuesday, Buehler will have two extra days of rest for Game 3.

Buehler should be able to go the distance in Game 3, and he has established himself as a reliable big-game pitcher (2.50 ERA in 13 career postseason starts).

2. The RISP tide must turn

The Dodgers are 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position after two games in the National League Championship Series, with both singles coming from Chris Taylor. He is 2 for 3 with runners in scoring position, while the rest of the Dodgers are a combined 0 for 15 with runners in scoring position. In these two games versus the Braves, they’ve converted 25 baserunners into only six runs on the ground. Obviously, there will be no comeback until and until that improves. “I believe that in that specific situation, there was an approach issue,” Roberts remarked after the second game.

  1. The Dodgers have a strong home run offense (their 237 home runs were the fourth highest in Major League Baseball), but they have only hit seven home runs in their first eight postseason games.
  2. The Dodgers are still waiting for their turn.
  3. They posted baseball’s fourth-lowest swing rate (45.4 percent) and ninth-lowest strikeout rate (22.9 percent) during the regular season, according to Baseball Reference.
  4. In response to a question about whether the Dodgers are purposefully being more aggressive following Game 1, Roberts responded affirmatively.
  5. Just trying to win and fight, win pitches, and give ourselves a fighting chance.
  6. Consequently, I believe we have been doing a far better job in this regard.” The Dodgers recorded six two-strike hits off of Max Friedin in Game 1 of the series.
  7. Despite striking out 10 times in Game 2, they managed to score four runs, which was their third-highest total in eight playoff games, partly as a result of nine walks – nine!
  8. When the stakes are highest in the postseason, it’s important to be ready and able to make adjustments.
  9. Perhaps the walks and strikeouts in Game 2 are an indicator that this is already taking place, as they suggest.
  10. In any case, the Dodgers have done an excellent job of creating scoring opportunities in the National League Championship Series.

This NLCS comeback will require them to convert at least some of their opportunities into runs if they are to be successful. The Braves are really talented, and they should be commended for keeping the Dodgers off the board, but constantly congratulating yourself is not the way to win a series.

3. The Turners have to be better

With Justin Turner and Trea Turner being as ineffective as they have been this postseason, it’s a little marvel that the Dodgers are four victories away from capturing their fourth World Series title in five years. As a team, the Turners are 10 for 63 (.159) in the playoffs, and even though they had three hits in Game 1, they were not scalded by the opposition. A ground ball up the middle and a tiny flare in the other direction were the two hits of the day. What we’ve seen thus far from the Turners is much too much of the same thing: A hittable fastball was fouled away over the plate by Trea, who then widened the zone and swung at pitches off the plate for strikes two and three in a vital situation.

When Turner has a terrible at-bat and a bad postseason, it becomes more obvious.

It’s a game of chase, and even when you do get some pitches to handle, you’re not going to finish the at-bat with them.

“I believe a large number of our players are torn between a need for velocity and a want for spin.

Everything outside of your zone should be avoided at all costs.” This past Saturday, Turner (Trea, not Justin) hit a ball to the warning track in Game 2 of the World Series, which would have been a home run at 26 of the other 29 ballparks, including Dodger Stadium, and which may be a hint that he’s on the verge of breaking out of his slump.

  1. To be successful at this point, the Dodgers will want more than just hints that Trea is on the mend and Justin’s probable injury excuses.
  2. While it is implausible that the Dodgers would win the World Series with the Turners performing like this, I would not rule it out.
  3. My normal stance on “shaking up the lineup” is that it’s not necessary, while I’m not sure it’s necessary to put Trea back in the leadoff slot.
  4. At the very least, it’s something to think about.
  5. “If I receive two strikes, I’ll fight because I feel like my aggression has been insufficient.
  6. However, for me, it is necessary to take those risks.
  7. That ten-for-sixty-three performance is now in the books.

There’s nothing you can do about it. Concentrating on becoming more productive in Game 3 and beyond must be the goal. Good players go through slumps from time to time, and the Turners are going through a slump at a horrible moment for the Dodgers.

4. Lean on the top bullpen arms more

Count me among those who predicted Uras’s performance in Game 2. To summarize, the following is true: Roberts was relieved by Uras in the eighth inning with a two-run lead, three days after his 59-pitch relief appearance in NLDS Game 5 and three days before his planned start in NLCS Game 4. Roberts had a two-run lead in the eighth inning. In his first four at-bats, Uras allowed three hits, including Riley’s thunderous game-tying double, which tied the game at 1-1. Six pitches later, the two-run advantage was gone.

It didn’t work, “After Game 2, Roberts had this to say: “He hadn’t thrown a bullpen before, but he was the most qualified candidate at the moment.

It was a wonderful place for him, and getting him through the 8th was crucial in getting him to Kenley (Jansen) to finish the game.” Uras has a lot of experience in the bullpen and in important games.

The question was whether it was indeed “a ideal place for him,” considering the following facts:

  • Blake Treinent pitched only nine pitches in the seventh inning, and there was a chance to utilize him for more than three outs if the situation called for it. Due to the fact that Treinen was not double swapped in, his position in the starting lineup was taken by Max Scherzer, who stated that his “arm was dead” in Game 2 after appearing in relief for the National League Championship Series Game 5 three days before. In that game, Uras threw a total of 59 pitches. His performance in Game 2 was likely hampered by Roberts’ penchant for forcing starting pitchers into playoff relief outings when it isn’t absolutely required. Just think about how many times we’ve witnessed him do it with Clayton Kershaw over the years.

In the eighth inning, the Dodgers appeared to be desperate for a left-on-left matchup against Rosario and Freeman, which is logical given their recent struggles. However, when your best alternatives are Uras on his toss day or a rookie with 19 2/3 major league innings under his belt (Justin Bruihl), it’s probably best to go with Treinen or go with Jansen against the top of the order and work out the ninth later in the process. Following Game 2, Roberts was asked about possibly using Bruihl in the eighth inning, and he responded, “I just think that if you’re talking about performance, experience – nothing against Justin – but when you have a choice between him and Julio, I think it’s pretty clear who I was going to choose.” Even after Uras was removed from the game, Brusdar Graterol was sent in to begin the ninth inning with the score at 4-4, and it wasn’t until the situation became critical that Jansen emerged from the bullpen.

  1. Consequently, the argument may be made.
  2. I had no objections to the decision to use Scherzer to finish out Game 5 of the NLDS.
  3. Kelly and Vesia have done an outstanding job!
  4. The game in question was not an elimination game, and I was hesitant to utilize Uras as a reliever, not only because of the nature of the game, but also because it may throw a kink into his Game 4 starting lineup.
  5. “No, not at all.
  6. No, not at all “When asked if Uras’ availability in Game 4 will be affected by his presence in Game 2, Roberts said affirmatively.
  7. Assuming there is a Game 5, the games 3-5 (if there is a Game 5) will be played on three consecutive days, making it more difficult to push your top relievers over the following several days.

That being said, the Dodgers are in a tight spot, and if it means putting Treinen and Jansen on the mound for more than three outs apiece to win Game 3, then so be it. Make no attempt at stealing bases while starting with starters in relief or with weaker relievers.

5. Get a little lucky

The Dodgers have enough skill to defeat the Braves four times in the next five games based only on their individual abilities. It wouldn’t hurt to have a little bit of good fortune along the road, though. The Dodgers could need a couple of bounces to go their way, a few of calls to go their way, and a few things to break their way more generally. The best teams are fortunate, and the Dodgers haven’t had any good fortune thus far in the National League Championship Series. It only takes one lucky leap to shift the scales in their favor.
