Which Baseball Teams Are In The Playoffs

MLB playoffs: 2022 MLB postseason predictions, schedule and format

Troy Taormina is a sports reporter for USA TODAY Sports. The Major League Baseball playoffs in 2021 have concluded, and the Atlanta Braves have been crowned World Series winners. Teams are already planning for the MLB playoffs in 2022, now that the Fall Classic has been chosen. Let’s take a look at the program for 2022 and some early forecasts. Due to the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement this offseason, the 2022 season and postseason structure might be drastically different than they are now.

However, it will be included in CBA discussions this winter, with the possibility of further growth.

MLB playoff predictions 2022: National League

Orlando Ramirez is a sports reporter for USA TODAY Sports.

NL No.1 seed vs. NL Wild Card Game winner: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be confronted with a slew of concerns this offseason as a result of the departure of so many key members of their roster. Los Angeles, however, is the favorite to win the World Series in 2022, thanks to a deep and talented farm system, an ownership group that has little regard for money, and an already exceptional lineup and strong rotation. Unless and until proven differently, the Los Angeles Dodgers would keep the #1 rank in our MLB season forecasts until further notice.

National League Division Series: Atlanta Braves (No. 2 seed) vs Milwaukee Brewers (No. 3 seed)

Winning the World Series without one of baseball’s finest players is a stunning accomplishment. The Atlanta Braves hit a hot streak at the ideal time, which resulted in a run that concluded in a World Series victory celebration. Despite the return of Ronald Acua Jr. and Mike Soroka to the Atlanta Braves, no team has won the World Series twice since the New York Yankees in 1986. (1998-2000). At the very least, the Braves have a good chance of making the Major League Baseball playoffs. Once again, the Milwaukee Brewers were unable to complete the comeback in the Major League Baseball postseason.

The Brewers’ dynamite rotation (Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Adrian Houser) is back in action, and the team has the financial wherewithal to bolster the middle of their lineup.

NL Wild Card Game prediction: San Diego Padres vs. St. Louis Cardinals

The San Diego Padres’ problem in 2021 was not a lack of talent; rather, it was a lack of leadership and bad in-game management that caused this team to struggle. It is anticipated that the appointment of Bob Melvin will resolve some of these difficulties. As a result, San Diego should be proactive this winter, seeking some of the best players available in trades and on the open market. Because of the returning star power, the San Diego Padres have an advantage over the San Francisco Giants in the NL West.

Louis Cardinals made the correct move in hiring Mike Shildt as their manager.

The return of both starters provides St.

The Cardinals should be in the heart of the MLB postseason battle throughout the season, thanks to a solid rotation that is supplemented by an above-average offense and a good bullpen.

MLB playoff predictions 2022: American League

Jayne Kamin-Oncea is a sports reporter for USA TODAY Sports.

AL No. 1 seed vs AL Wild Card Game winner: Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox team already appears to be in excellent shape heading into the winter. There are contracts with Luis Robert, José Abreu, Yoán Moncada, Andrew Vaughn, Yasmani Grandal, Tim Anderson, and Eloy Jiménez, among other players. Dylan Cease, Lance Lynn, Lucas Giolito, Liam Hendriks, and Michael Kopech are among the pitchers who will be back in the lineup. The only real concern is whether or not Tony La Russa will be able to make the correct selections during games throughout the postseason.

American League Division Series: Houston Astros (No. 2 seed) vs. Toronto Blue Jays (No. 3 seed)

The Houston Astros have a significant edge in terms of their position in the Major League Baseball playoffs. The American League East, on the other hand, is a duel between four teams with postseason aspirations. Houston confronts its own set of problems this summer, especially how it will cover the vacuum created by the departure of Carlos Correa, but the Astros’ remaining talent plus Dusty Baker’s presence in a tight AL West division should be enough to propel them to the postseason. Despite missing out on the playoffs by one game, many who participated in October were grateful that the Toronto Blue Jays were not invited to the postseason.

A youthful team with more experience has a chance to win the American League East.

AL Wild Card Game prediction: Tampa Bay Rays vs Detroit Tigers

If the Tampa Bay Rays had a payroll of $115 million, which wouldn’t even place them in the top 10 in the American League, they would be the perennial World Series favorite. Instead, the Rays will hope that a few of All-Stars and great players, along with some creative mixing and matching, can propel them to victory. As long as they remain in the bottom ten in terms of salary, they will never win the World Series, but the system nearly assures that they will make it to the postseason. It is time to make a bold forecast.

However, for this team to have a realistic chance of making the MLB playoffs, they will need to be extremely active in the summer.

If you throw in Carlos Correa and a front-line starter acquired through free agency, as well as top prospect Spencer Torkelson, it’s feasible that October baseball will be a reality.

However, given the likelihood of an expansion of the MLB playoffs, we’d anticipate the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees to make the journey to the postseason as well.

When are the MLB playoffs?

Major League Baseball reveals its schedule for the 2022 season at the start of the offseason, according to Thomas B.

Shea of USA TODAY Sports. The regular season in 2022 comes to a close on Friday, September 30. The Major League Baseball playoffs in 2022 will begin shortly after that.

  • It is unknown when the National League and American League wild-card games will take place
  • The American League and National League Division Series are unknown
  • The National League and American League championship series are unknown
  • And the World Series in 2021 is unknown.

Tracking which teams have clinched a spot in 2021 MLB playoffs

The Major League Baseball regular season in 2021 has reached the month of September, and the postseason is just around the horizon. The San Francisco Giants, who were the first club in major league history to win 90 games, and the reigning champion Los Angeles Dodgers have both secured their berths in the postseason. Now it’s just a question of determining who will win the National League West and who will occupy one of the two National League Wild Card slots. In addition to those two clubs, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Chicago White Sox are all on the verge of punching their tickets to the postseason as well.

As the month of October approaches, we’ll be keeping track of who has clinched a playoff spot in the following days and weeks.

Teams who have clinched 2021 MLB playoff berth

The San Francisco Giants have been one of the most pleasant surprises in baseball this season, and they are a genuine contender to make a long postseason run in the American League. On September 13, the San Francisco 49ers won a postseason place and became the first club in the league to reach 90 victories. The Giants boast a strong starting rotation that includes All-Star Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Logan Webb, and Alex Wood, all of whom have accumulated at least 10 victories so far this year.

As part of their offensive overhaul, they acquired Kris Bryant at the trade deadline to complement Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford. San Francisco is presently in first place in the National League West, with a 2.5-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Los Angeles Dodgers — Playoff berth

After beating the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday and suffering losses to the San Diego Padres and the Cincinnati Reds, the defending World Series champions will return to the postseason for the seventh consecutive season, according to the team’s official website. Los Angeles possesses one of the finest opening lineups in baseball, as well as a top-tier starting rotation, anchored by Walker Buehler, that is among the best in the league. Buehler, the team’s ace pitcher, with a 14-3 record and a 2.32 earned run average in 29 starts.

Los Angeles is presently in second place in the National League West and holds the first available National League Wild Card position.

Milwaukee Brewers — Playoff berth

After winning a wild card place on Saturday, the National League Central champions will return to the postseason for the fourth consecutive season. With a win over the Cubs and defeats by the Padres and Reds, the Brewers were able to secure the division title. Milwaukee leads the Cardinals by a double digit margin in the Central Division, and they have a chance to capture the division this week when they play the Cardinals in a four-game series. When it comes to the triple crown, Avisail Garcia is on top, while Corbin Burnes is on top of the pitching staff when it comes to ERA and strikeout totals.

Chicago White Sox — AL Central champs

Chicago became the first club in the league to clinch a division championship. They secured the division title with a victory over the Indians, who were in second place in the American League Central. Since the Chicago White Sox are 7.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the American League standings as of clinching day, it seems improbable that the ChiSox will secure the top slot in the league. Chicago struggled to get off to a good start this season, losing three of their first four games and going 6-8 in their first 14 games before gaining momentum.

They have three pitchers with at least ten victories, but Lance Lynn has been the most effective, posting a 2.47 ERA and a 5.0 WAR.

Tampa Bay Rays — AL East champs

The Rays added the American League East championship to their 2021 trophy case just three days after clinching a postseason berth. The Rays defeated the Marlins twice in a row on Friday and Saturday, while the Yankees defeated the Red Sox twice in a row on Sunday. Tampa Bay was able to secure the division title as a result of this. With eight games remaining in the season, they have a five-game lead over Houston for the best record in the American League.

St. Louis Cardinals— Playoff Berth

Tuesday, September 28th, the St. Louis Cardinals officially clinched a berth in the postseason. While the club extended their winning run to 17 games, which is a new franchise record, this was virtually completely overlooked. The saying goes that you have to go hot at the right moment, and with only a 2.8 percent chance of making the playoffs as of September 10th, the Cardinals are accomplishing just that with their recent success.

They are now 6.0 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central.

Houston Astros — AL West champs

Having secured their fifth postseason appearance in as many years, the Astros are the American League West champions, having won the division title for the fourth time in five years. Houston defeated the Rays on Thursday, September 30 to clinch the American League East championship. Tampa Bay eliminated Houston from the playoffs last year and might face them in the ALCS this year. Astros have a two-game lead over the White Sox for second place in the American League, with the Astros having won two of their last three games.

Atlanta Braves — NL East champs

In the National League East, the Braves defeated the Phillies 5-3 on Thursday, September 30 to clinch the championship. This is the Braves’ fourth consecutive division win, and it is a well-deserved one given all the attention paid to the New York Mets during the season. Atlanta won six straight games and ten of eleven overall to claim the division title.

List of Major League Baseball postseason teams – Wikipedia

The MLB postseason format has evolved throughout its history, with the number of participating teams increasing from two (for its first six-plus decades) to the current 10, with a special format in2020having 16. The World Series was first played in 1903, when the champions of the establishedNational League(NL) and the upstartAmerican League(AL) met for a playoff series. From that time through 1968, the two leagues (which each had eight teams through 1960) each sent only its team with the best regular-season record to the World Series. In 1969, as each league had expanded to 12 teams, each league was divided into East and West divisions and another playoff round was created. This round became known as theLeague Championship Series(LCS), with the four division champions competing for a spot in the World Series every year. This format lasted until 1993. In 1994, the again-expanded leagues were re-organized into three separate divisions, and another playoff round was established, called theDivision Series(DS). In this format, for each league, the champions of the East, Central, and West divisions would be joined in the playoffs by aWild Cardteam. The addition of the Wild Card allowed a team that was not a division winner but still had one of the top regular-season records to enter the postseason. In 1998, the system was slightly modified so that the division winners with better regular-season records would be rewarded with homefield advantage in the division series and LCS. In 2012, the structure was adjusted such that two teams from each league receive Wild Card berths and then playa single game against each otherto determine who advances to the Division Series. It also eliminated the previous restriction that the wild card team could not play a team in its own division in the first round. Until 2019, this was the playoff format used in MLB. Three anomalies in the above-described system occurred. In 1904, theWorld Seriesdid not take place because the National League champion did not wish to participate and the leagues had not yet agreed to require their champions to do so. In 1981, there was aDivisionSeriesdue to a split season brought about by a midsummerplayer’s strike. And in 1994, the postseasondid not take placedue to aplayer’s strike.

Updated through the 2021 postseason.

Ranking Every 2021 MLB Playoff Team’s Starting Lineup

  1. Associated Press photographer David J. Phillip It’s worth taking a look at the top remaining lineups now that we’re down to the final eight Major League Baseball clubs vying for a World Series berth. Some of baseball’s top lineups, such as the Toronto Blue Jays and the St. Louis Cardinals, either missed the playoffs or were eliminated from contention altogether. Nonetheless, you will discover that the majority of the finest lineups are still competing for a chance to win the pennant and, ultimately, the World Series.
  1. Associated Press photographer Alex Gallardo The Milwaukee Brewers were able to win their division despite having the poorest hitting average in the National League, which they shared with the Miami Marlins (.233). They are last in OPS among playoff teams and were 20th overall in the regular season, both lows for the postseason. In addition, this is the only club in the playoffs that does not have a player who has hit at least 30 home runs. The Brewers had a slash line of (.233/.317/.396), which was lower than the National League average (.242/.318/.407). Avisail Garcia, Willy Adames, Christian Yelich, Kolten Wong, and Luis Urias are some of the team’s most potent hitters. It is a mediocre offensive performance. The Brewers just needed two runs off Charlie Morton, who pitched brilliantly for the Braves in the National League Division Series opener, to take a 1-0 lead in the series. They then went on to lose Game 2 3-0, which was pretty predictable. A pitching staff that has struck out more hitters than anybody else while allowing the second-lowest opposition batting average and the third-lowest earned run average has propelled them to this point.
  1. Associated Press photographer Chris O’Meara It sounds strange to claim that the greatest club in the American League has the weakest lineup, especially considering that they have created the second-highest number of runs of any team in the league this year. On-base percentage is the most important stat for the Rays, as they have the lowest among the four American League clubs competing in the division series (.321). Other than the White Sox, the Rays have the lowest slugging percentage in the American League, and their batting average is the lowest among the remaining AL contenders. Only the Brewers concluded the season with a worse on-base percentage (OPS) than the Rays among the remaining playoff teams. They are good at the small things they do offensively. For example, no other team in the postseason has stolen more bases than the Rays did during the regular season. The St. Louis Cardinals were the only club to make it to the postseason that stole more bases than the Tampa Bay Rays did during the regular season. Only the Astros have a better offensive win share (WAR) or total win share (WAR) among the postseason clubs. The Rays’ defense is also outstanding, ranking second only to the Astros among the remaining contenders in outs over average (the Cardinals led in this statistic). According to Baseball Savant, Tampa Bay’s defense held on to a 28-run lead. Pitching is critical for the Rays, who posted the sixth lowest opponent batting average in the league, same to the Brewers.
  1. By Ben Margot for the Associated Press After losing superstar Ronald Acuna Jr. to injury in July, this lineup did a remarkable job of making up for the void left by his absence. Despite this, they managed to score runs, placing them sixth in baseball (790). The Cubs are trailing the leaders from the West, but they are doing far better than their current NLDS opponent Milwaukee. Atlanta hit more home runs in the postseason than any other club, with the exception of the San Francisco Giants. In that effort, Austin Riley had 33 home runs to lead the way, followed by Freddie Freeman with 31 and Ozzie Albies with 30. The Braves had a better on-base percentage (.754) than either the Rays or the Brewers this season, but they lagged every other club remaining in contention for the World Series. When there were runners on base, only the Astros had a greater batting average (.267) or slugging percentage (.463) than Atlanta, and only the Dodgers had a better on-base percentage when there were runners on base than Atlanta.
  1. Associated Press photographer Matt Marton They finished in the top five of the South Side’s batting average and on-base percentage rankings. The White Sox just did not hit many home runs this season, and they finished worst among postseason teams in this department. Among playoff teams, the Chicago Cubs had the third-best batting average (.266) with runners in scoring position, and they had more hits than every other team in the postseason except the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, and Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s difficult to miss a lineup that includes the reigning American League MVP Jose Abreu, who completed the season second only to Salvador Perez in RBI. This right-handed-dominated lineup is led by one of the finest hitters in the game in All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson, who is also the team’s starting shortstop. Anderson concluded the season tied with Bryce Harper for the seventh-best hitting average in the major leagues. Add to it the likes of Luis Robert (who led the White Sox in slugging at.567), Yasmani Grandal (who hit 23 home runs) and Andrew Vaughn, and the White Sox have a potent arsenal.
  1. Associated Press photographer Jeff Chiu This season, the Giants hit a total of 241 home runs, which was a National League record. Their isolated power matched them with the Atlanta Braves for second place in MLB, following only the Toronto Blue Jays in terms of total runs scored. Additionally, the Giants had the greatest batting average and slugging percentage among the National League postseason teams, with only the Los Angeles Dodgers having a better on-base percentage. The Giants’ walk-to-strikeout ratio was the second-best among National League contenders, once again behind only the division-rival Dodgers in this category. This is a lineup that has a lot of power and has good control of the zone. Despite the fact that the Giants did not have a single player who ranked among the top 10 in any slash line, they created the second-highest number of runs in the National League, trailing only the Dodgers. San Francisco also placed first among National League clubs in a number of offensive metrics, including weighted runs generated, weighted runs over average, and weighted on-base percentage. It was a complete surprise to everyone when the Giants finished with the best record in baseball, led by the likes of trade deadline acquisition Kris Bryant and veterans Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford.
  1. Photograph courtesy of Mary DeCicco/Getty Images With the second-best batting average among the postseason teams, the American League wild-card winner had a good season, and the advanced statistics have been just as kind to them. Boston had the second-best wRC, wRAA, and wOBA in baseball, behind only the New York Yankees. Only the Astros and Blue Jays had a better record in these categories throughout the entire season. The Red Sox’s explosive offense was on full display in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Friday night, as they pounded out 14 runs on 20 hits in a rout of the Rays. Boston was shut out in Game 1, but outhit Tampa Bay 9-6 in the second game. In addition, there was that wild-card game against the Yankees. A pair of homers from Xander Bogaerts and Kyle Schwarber set the tone for the evening. In the third inning, they were able to get Gerrit Cole out of the game. Alex Verdugo knocked in three more runs to give the team some breathing room. Similarly to the top wild card on the other side, this is an offense that should be feared.
  1. Photograph by Wally Skalij/Getty Images In this situation, the Dodgers do not have a strong statistical argument to make. Let’s get this out of the way right now. The Red Sox or the Giants should be the favorites here, according to the odds. This one is for the old-school baseball enthusiasts out there: it’s a ranking based on how it feels. Alternatively, or maybe more explicitly, founded on dread. There is no more terrifying starting lineup than one that includes Mookie Betts, Corey Seager, Trea Turner, and Justin Turner. Then they bury a mix of Cody Bellinger, AJ Pollock, and Chris Taylor near the bottom of the lineup to finish the season. It makes little difference that the Dodgers are ranked fifth in baseball in terms of wins above replacement (WAR) and that Houston, Tampa Bay, Chicago, and San Francisco all have higher offensive WAR. Betts and Bellinger both had disappointing seasons, but Los Angeles is strong enough to withstand them. When the Dodgers are on the field, there’s only one player I’d want to have over them
  2. It’s Yasiel Puig.
  1. Cooper Neill/Getty Images & Stock Photos When the greatest hitter in the lineup is batting eighth, you know the lineup is lethal. That is certainly the case for the Houston Astros, who have more outstanding players than they know what to do with at any one time. Jose Altuve, a three-time batting champion, has taken over as the team’s leadoff hitter, replacing George Springer in that role. Michael Brantley, who is hitting second, is about as reliable a hitter as you can find. Then there’s Alex Bregman, who finished second to Mike Trout for the American League MVP award in 2019, and slugger Yordan Alvarez, who was named American League Rookie of the Year in the same year. Getting through Yuli Gurriel, the American League hitting champion this year, and Carlos Correa, one of baseball’s greatest playoff performances of all time, will put you in the company of Kyle Tucker. Correadescribed Tucker in the following manner. After the Astros grabbed a 2-0 series lead over the White Sox, with Tucker playing a critical role, the following statement was made: “The greatest hitter in our lineup this year, in my opinion, and he’s also one of the finest hitters in the game. The reason I say this is because, obviously, the stats will back me up, but also because I don’t believe he will be taken in by surprise very frequently. It makes no difference whether you throw a first-pitch breaking ball or a first-pitch fastball on the first pitch. He appears to be punctual all of the time. Quite a unique accomplishment. There aren’t many batters who are capable of adapting to such a situation.” For someone who is hitting so deep in the lineup, this is high praise. You’ll notice that throughout this post, other teams who are lagging the Astros in a certain statistic are frequently mentioned. This is due to the fact that this is the finest lineup in baseball. They finished first in the league in wins above replacement and traded places with the Blue Jays for first place in every major offensive statistic. The Astros led the league in hits, batting average, and on-base percentage, and they were second only to the Toronto Blue Jays in on-base percentage. They also had the best walk-to-strikeout ratio in the league.

MLB Rumors: Expanded 14-Team Playoff Discussed; Division Winners Would Pick Opponent

Austin McAfee/File Image Getty Images/Sportswire/Getty Images A playoff expansion plan that would feature a total of 14 clubs, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, is now being considered by Major League Baseball and the players’ association. The three divisional champions from each league, as well as four Wild Card places from each league, would make up the playoff field. All four division champions would receive byes into the best-of-five divisional series, while the remaining two division winners would choose their first-round opponent from from the lowest three wild-card clubs in each league.

In a departure from previous wild card round formats, the higher-seeded clubs would be given the opportunity to host all three games of the best-of-three series, giving them a significant advantage.

NBC Sports’ Rogers said that players on both sides had “mixed feelings” about the plan, with players afraid that it will “disincentivize clubs from investing and/or striving for more wins knowing that they may make the postseason with, say, 80 to 83 victories.” In the meanwhile, “After taking part in an informal poll at the general managers meetings earlier this month, it was discovered that executives were not enthusiastic about the concept of holding a broadcast event on the Sunday night before the playoffs began in which opponents would be picked.

The situation calls for second-guessing as well as possible bulletin-board fodder.” Financially, it would make sense for league owners, given the increased number of broadcast games and the fact that four additional clubs every year would be eligible for a postseason place and a chance to play at home.

The playoffs was not significantly more chaotic as a result of the structure, with the World Series being decided by the meeting of the top two teams in each league, the eventual champion Los Angeles Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Another alteration in the playoff structure appears to be on the horizon, according to current indications. Until midnight on Wednesday, December 1, the present collective bargaining agreement between the league’s owners and players will come to an end.

Countdown to the MLB postseason: The playoff field is finally set!

The search for October players continued right up until the final day of the MLB season. In fact, as of Sunday, there were six teams still in contention for postseason positions or placement, and they were all playing at the same time, which was unprecedented! Following the events of No. 162, the following is how things turned out: The Giants and the Dodgers started Sunday separated by one game in the National League West. Both teams had already secured their berths in the postseason, but it remained to be seen which club would win the National League West and which team would become a wild-card team with 100 or more wins.

  1. Despite beating the Brewers, the Dodgers were forced to settle for the wild card spot.
  2. WILDCARD PLAYERS: The Yankees, Red Sox, Mariners, and Blue Jays were all in contention for the last two wild-card places heading into Sunday’s game.
  3. The Blue Jays easily defeated the Baltimore Orioles, but they required assistance from a club higher in the standings to have a shot at the postseason.
  4. As a result, the Mariners, who had gone on a spectacular run, were also eliminated.
