It took place from May 25 through May 30 at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Alabama, and was the 2021 Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament. It was decided who would be the tournament winner of the Division ISoutheastern Conference in collegiate baseball during the annual tournament. After making their first appearance as tournament winners, the Arkansas Razorbacks earned the conference’s automatic invitation to the 2021 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. Since 1977 (with the exception of 2020), the tournament has been contested every year, with LSU capturing twelve championships, the most of any institution in the history of the event.

Missouri has never before been victorious in the tournament. This will be the twenty-second consecutive year and the twenty-fourth overall that the tournament will be hosted at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, formerly known as Regions Park from 2007 to 2012.

Format and seeding

The top two seeds in the tournament are awarded to the regular season division champions, while the remaining slots in the tournament are awarded to the top ten clubs in the conference standings, regardless of division. The bottom eight teams compete in a single-elimination first round, which is followed by a double-elimination format until the semifinals, after which the format returns to single elimination until the title game is played. This is the eighth year that this format has been used.

SEC Baseball Tournament Round One Results

Following their victories, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss moved to the next round.

Florida vs. Kentucky

The Gators took an early lead over Kentucky and used that advantage to set the tone for the duration of the game. Florida pitcher Tommy Mace allowed two runners to reach base in the first inning, but then struck out the next three batters to complete the shutout. A solo home run over the left field wall was hit in the bottom half of the first inning by Jacob Young, who connected on the first pitch he saw. The Gators couldn’t get by with just one score as Sterlin Thompson drove in another with a two-out RBI single to make it 2-0.

Florida responded swiftly in the bottom half of the inning, loaded the bases when Cory Action drove in two runs with an RBI single to right field to give the Gators a two-run lead again. The Gators won 4-1 in the last game of the season.

Alabama vs. South Carolina

In the third inning, Alabama scored six runs to put the game out of reach early on against South Carolina. Peyton Wilson drove in two runs with an RBI double in the third inning, followed by an RBI single from Owen Diodati and a three-run home run from Jackson Tate. With two more in the fourth and one in the sixth, Alabama extended their lead to a comfortable margin over South Carolina, which was unable to cut the distance sufficiently. The Crimson Tide hung on for a 9-3 victory.

Georgia vs. LSU

The eighth and ninth seeds didn’t waste any time on Tuesday, scoring all of their runs in the first inning of their respective games. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Georgia starter Luke Wagner, who was lifted by Jaden Woods in the fourth inning and continued to pitch until the seventh inning without conceding a run. Georgia’s Chaney Rogers hit a three-run, two-out double to bring the game to a 4-1 tie, where it remained until the end.

Ole Miss vs. Auburn

Ole Miss scored four runs in the third inning to take control of the game. Justin Bench, the Rebels’ third baseman, started the inning with a home run that went inside the park. In the third inning, four more Rebels reached base, including Peyton Chatagnier, who drove in two runs with a single. Even though Auburn was able to cut the lead down to 5-4 in the seventh inning, the Rebels’ lead was increased by three runs on a two-run homerun by catcher Hayden Dunhurst. Ole Miss won the game 7-4 in the end.

SEC Baseball Tournament in Hoover through 2022, but could it be headed to Oklahoma City in the future?

The SEC Baseball Tournament will be held at the Hoover Met in 2022, but the venue for the tournament beyond that is still up in the air, according to the league. The SEC’s agreement to conduct the conference tournament at the former minor league stadium in Hoover, Alabama, was extended for another two years in 2019, bringing the total length of the agreement to 2021, according to the league. That would have meant that the tournament in May of this year would have been the final one under the existing agreement, but the league extended the agreement by one year because no event was conducted in 2020 as a result of the season being suspended by the COVID-19 virus outbreak.

In a vote this week, the SEC voted 14-0 to ask the current members of the Big 12 Conference to join the league, and both accepted on Friday.

According to current plans, Texas and Oklahoma would join the SEC for the 2025-26 college sports season; however, the institutions may opt out of their existing Big 12 rights agreement and join the SEC earlier if they wanted to.

More:Carlson: Why OU might want to join the SEC even if it meant giving up some of its previous triumphs After hosting all but three Big 12 baseball championships since 1997 (with no event in 2020), Oklahoma City will lose its hosting rights for three years starting in 2022 when the conference tournament relocates to Arlington, Texas.

Nashville, New Orleans, Memphis, and Jacksonville, Fla., all made bids in 2016 to entice the SEC Tournament away from Hoover, Alabama, where it has been hosted since 1998.

The city spent around $80 on renovations to ensure the continuation of the competition.

After an open bidding procedure, the Alabama Sports Council was given the contract to organize the event in Hoover, which is currently in its second year.

A meeting with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey was scheduled for this summer between Gene Hallman, president of the Alabama Sports Council, and Sankey to discuss the possibility of making Hoover the long-term home of the SEC baseball tournament, similar to how Atlanta has served as home to the SEC football championship game and Nashville has served as home to the men’s basketball tournament, which will be held at Bridgestone Arena every year from 2023-2035.

“We absolutely want to keep it in Hoover,” stated a representative from the Hall family.

We’ve been working on it for quite some time now.” “We have a positive outlook for the future,” said the team.

In her role as special projects manager for the City of Oklahoma City, Sue Hollenbeck, a former sports business director for the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau and now special projects manager for the Oklahoma City Baseball Tournament, encourages her city to pursue the baseball tournament.

Oklahoma City may possibly have an interest in hosting the SEC Softball Tournament in the future.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, hosted the 2021 edition of the event.

Additionally, the Big 12 Tournament has been held there since 1996, but the league did not host a tournament from 2011 to 2016.

University of Florida (2022), Arkansas (2023), Georgia (2024), Auburn (2025), Kentucky (2026), Louisiana State University (2027), Missouri (2028), and Ole Miss (2029) will host the SEC Softball Tournament in the future (2029).

As a result of the presence of multiple institutions west of the Mississippi, Hollenbeck believes the SEC will have to host several finals in that region. Jenni Carlson provided assistance with this report.
