After growing up in the little hamlet of Fort Meade, Florida, he went on to play on dusty fields in the major leagues, roaming the outfields of the game’s most storied stadiums. Cutch’s journey was not one that could be hurried. He was never in possession of the most up-to-date equipment or the most advanced facilities. His only possession was a desire to explore how far he could push himself and the game he so much loved. McCutchen is considered one of baseball’s all-time greats with five All-Star appearances, four Silver Slugger awards, and one National League MVP trophy.

1. Become a Master of Hand-Eye Coordination

In the batter’s box, hand-eye coordination is a critical component in achieving success. McCutchen, who has a lifetime batting average of.289, began perfecting this technique at a young age. Cutch’s father, Lorenzo McCutchen, devised a practice that pushed the youngster to concentrate solely on hitting the ball with the bat. “Back in the day, my father used to collect broomsticks and chunks of cork—fishing cork or whatever it was.
