7 Ways to Crush a Hitting Slump

A game of baseball, even for the world’s best players, is a tremendously humbling experience. There are a plethora of Major Leaguers that are experiencing a slump at any one time. So, what are your options? What can you do to assist someone who is in a rut? I touched on this subject briefly in my previous piece on slumps, but here are a few additional suggestions for helping your players get over this difficult experience.

The Causes of a Slump

In reality, the majority of people believe that slumps are caused by the batter performing incorrectly in their mechanics. The mental state of the batter, on the other hand, is frequently what contributes to a prolonged slump. Physical abnormalities are quite simple to recognize and correct. First, go over the following fundamental checklist, and then go on to the mental side of the process:

Make a video of the hitter in action during a live game. If you can simply collect batting practice film, it is OK; however, genuine game footage is preferable.

  1. Allow them to have a sense of firm touch before you make contact. More batting practice should be done, or they could go to a cage where they have hit successfully in the past and are comfortable. Get them back into their comfort zone and give them time to regain their confidence
  2. Have someone they respect give them a complement. Have someone, whether it’s a good player or an opponent coach, tell them that their swing is looking excellent and that they should keep up the good effort. In most cases, a “slump” appears considerably larger in the eyes of the hitter than it does to the rest of the team. Sometimes all it takes is a complement for the batter to realize what they’ve done
  3. Use visualization to your advantage. Studies have shown that visualizing is an effective type of “practice” that has a positive impact on one’s performance in the actual world. All great hitters employ some type of visualization in their game. No need to be odd or wacky
  4. Simply learn to “see and feel” yourself taking a nice swing and making strong contact with the ball. It is possible to work your way up to being able to do this function while on deck
  5. If so, you are on the correct road.

Make it clear that you want them to feel secure in their connection with you. Make sure they get in additional batting practice or find a cage where they have had success and are comfortable hitting in the past. How can you FIX or “get out” of a batting slump?

First and foremost, let’s face it. Baseball is the most difficult sport to play or execute at a high level on a continuous basis, and that is just in terms of the physical talents required. Mentally? Nothing comes close to baseball when it comes to demanding mental fortitude. The following are the reasons why. (See the preceding paragraph.) Baseball is a difficult sport to master. Baseball is a sport that isolates your ability to perform. There is no one else around and EVERYONE CAN SEE YOU when you boot a groundball or when you walk in the “go ahead” run or strike out with the bases loaded, to name a few things.
