The Major League Baseball season in 2022 is planned to begin on March 31 and conclude on October 2 of that year. The 92nd All-Star Gamewill be held on July 19 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and will be hosted by theLos Angeles Dodgers. Prior to the start of the season, the Cleveland Indians were renamed the Cleveland Guardians to better reflect their new identity. In response to the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the league and the Major League Baseball Players Association on December 2, 2021, Commissioner of Baseball Rob Manfred declared a lockout of players on December 3, 2021.

Therefore, the final conclusion of the lockout will determine how the season will be scheduled.

The National League had already used the designated hitter on a temporary basis during the previous season.

Lockout

At their meeting on December 2, 2021, the Major League Baseball owners agreed to impose a lockout after the expiration of the 2016 collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players’ union. The league and the union had disagreements over remuneration for young players, as well as restrictions on tanking in order to acquire better draft picks in the Major League Baseball draft. The MLB lockout in 2021–22 will be the first since the 1994–95 strike that resulted in a work stoppage.

It would be the first time since 1920 that the Rule 5 draft did not include a major league phase, however the minor league phase will still take place as scheduled.

Several players replied by altering their avatars on social media to the same faceless entities that had replaced their MLB.com headshots, which was a direct result of MLB removing news about active players and their headshots off MLB.com.

Schedule

On August 4, 2021, Major League Baseball announced their regular season schedule for the 2022 season. In the same way that they have done since 2013, all clubs play their four division opponents 19 times each for a total of 76 games. They also play six or seven games against each of the other 10 opponents in the same league for a total of 66 games, in addition to 20 interleague games. The American League East will face the National League Central, the National League West will face the American League West, and the American League West will face the National League East.

The game will be held at the Field of Dreams on August 11th. The annual Major League Baseball Little League Classicwill take place on August 21 at Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and will feature the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles.

Managerial changes

  • On the caps and alternate “winged G” emblem on the right sleeve of the home uniforms, the renamedCleveland Guardians will have a new wordmark logo that reads “Guardians,” as well as a “diamond C” logo on the shirts. A new typeface will be used for the names and numbers of the players, which the organization claims “represents the unique qualities of Cleveland with angular letters and numbers that resemble the architecture” of the Hope Memorial Bridge and its Guardians of Traffic statues. Apart from that, the red, white, and blue color schemes on the normal home and road uniforms, as well as the red alternate home uniform and the blue alternate road uniform, have remained mostly intact. There have been several stylistic alterations made by the Royals, including as the use of the word “Kansas City” in block letters on the road jerseys.

Broadcast rights

This will be the first year under the new seven-year television contracts with ESPN, Fox, and TBS, which will begin in January. Fox has extended its television rights to broadcast regular season games on either the main Fox broadcast network or FS1 (as a result of this agreement, the Fox network will carry more games than it did in 2021), as well as the All-Star Game, which will be televised on Fox. Unlike past years, ESPN will broadcast the national opening night games as well as 25 exclusive Sunday Night Baseball telecasts, but there will be no non-exclusive games during the week, as was the case previously.

With the exception of the yearly league rotation between networks for the first three rounds of the playoffs, the postseason rights stay the same each year.

The National League Wild Card Game will be broadcast on ESPN (barring any postseason changes).

The World Series will be shown live on Fox for the 23rd consecutive season.

Radio

It will be ESPN Radio’s 25th season of national coverage, which will include Sunday Night Baseball, Saturday games, Opening Day, and the entirety of the Major League Baseball postseason. A number of regular season and playoff games, including the Home Run Derby, the All-Star Game, and the World Series, will be broadcast in Spanish on TUDN Radio.

Local

  • In a statement released on September 28, 2021, Dodgers radio announcer Jaime Jarrn stated that he wants to retire after the 2022 season, which would be his 64th season as a member of the Dodgers Spanish Radio Broadcast crew. After reaching the age of 86 in December, Jarrin will only work home games for the Dodgers in 2022.

  • Keith Hernandez’s No. 17 will be retired by the New York Mets on July 9, according to the team.
