Baseball Teams Who Have Not Won A World Series

Teams That Have Never Won a World Series

Teams who have never been champions of the World Series What is it about sports that we enjoy? Part of it comes from the joy of celebrating a significant success, particularly a championship, alongside the players of the club we support. When following teams who frequently find themselves in contention, this works out nicely. The situation is less favorable if you root for one of the few clubs who have never won a World Series. Those supporters have experienced years of their teams not being in the championship conversation, or, perhaps worse still, coming close to winning it all and falling short of their expectations.

A list of all of them follows, with the number of years they’ve tried and failed to finish the season as champions being listed first in descending order.

San Diego Padres (1969)

The Padres were one of 14 expansion clubs that began play in Southern California after the 1961 season. They were the first team to do so. The squad has won two National League pennants, in 1984 and 1998, and has won the World Series twice. In 1984, they were defeated 4-to-1 by the Detroit Tigers in the World Series, and in 1998, they were defeated 4-to-1 by a New York Yankees club that had won four of the previous five World Series from 1996 to 2000. The Most Memorable Moments in Detroit Tigers Baseball

Milwaukee Brewers (1970)

The Milwaukee Brewers franchise began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969, but only lasted one season before falling bankrupt and being acquired by new management, who then relocated the team to Milwaukee, where they have been playing since that time. They’ve only appeared in the World Series once, in 1982, when they won the American League pennant before falling to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. They moved from the American League to the National League in 1998, but have yet to win an NL pennant.

Texas Rangers (1972)

The New York Rangers are the club on this list that has come the closest to winning a World Series, but has never done so. The most agonizing moment occurred in 2011 against the Cardinals, when the Rangers twice came within one strike of becoming World Series winners in the sixth game. It did not take place. Prior to moving to Texas, this organization began play in 1961 as the Washington Senators and failed to make the playoffs once during their tenure in Washington (and then not making the playoffs until 1995).

Seattle Mariners (1977)

The Seattle Mariners began play in the Major League Baseball just one year after the Seattle Seahawks began play in the National Football League. The Seahawks have advanced to three Super Bowls, with one of them victories.

The Mariners have never even been crowned champions of the American League. They have not appeared in the postseason since 2001, and they have only appeared in the postseason four times since the team’s establishment. Which sport is superior, baseball or football?

Colorado Rockies (1993)

One National League pennant was won by the Colorado Rockies (in 2007), however they were swept by the Boston Red Sox in the World Series that year. Aside from that, they have never advanced past the first round of the playoffs, which is the divisional series. The most memorable moments in Red Sox baseball

Tampa Bay Rays (1998)

They have won two American League pennants, in 2008 and 2020, with the Tampa Bay Rays. They were defeated 4-to-1 by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 series, and they were defeated 4-to-2 by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2020 series. Despite making the playoffs six times between 2008 and 2020, the team has failed to win the championship game. Despite the fact that none of these teams has ever won a World Series, they have all advanced to the championship game (except for the Mariners). History has shown us that they will all have their day in the sun at some point.

There have been World Series victories for each of the 16 founding clubs of Major League Baseball; however, the Philadelphia Phillies went from 1883 to 1979 without winning a title before winning the World Series in 1980.

The 6 Teams That Have Never Won MLB World Series

The World Series is the ultimate prize for which all Major League Baseball clubs compete, as it has been since 1903, when the champions of the American League and National League are paired together to determine the MLB champion. While the Yankees have risen to become one of the most successful sports teams in the United States as a result of their success in the World Series, none of these six clubs has ever won the championship.

Colorado Rockies

Though they have never won a division championship, the Colorado Rockies went on a 21-game winning streak in 2007 that propelled them to their first and only World Series appearance before being defeated by the Red Sox in seven games. Colorado has only had a couple of postseason appearances, but it’s important to remember that they’re one of the league’s newest clubs, having joined the league in 1993. Coors Field is located at an elevation of 5,200 feet (1,580 m) above sea level, making it the highest altitude of any Major League Baseball venue.

Even though there haven’t been many playoff games played at Coors Field, a World Series championship game here would be a marvel to behold for everyone.

Texas Rangers

In terms of a club that has never won a World Series, the Texas Rangers have the longest such drought, dating back to the organization’s inception as the Washington Senators in 1961. In 1972, the Rangers relocated to Texas, and it wasn’t until 1996 that they qualified for the postseason for the first time in their existence, winning the American League West and falling in four games to the New York Yankees in the Division Series. The Rangers have come as near as they have in recent years, suffering agonizing World Series losses in 2010 and 2011.

In 2011, they were one strike away from a victory on many occasions against the Cardinals, which was heartbreaking. Since 2020, the Rangers have played their home games in Globe Life Field, a magnificent venue that is deserving of hosting postseason baseball games.

Tampa Bay Rays

The Devil Rays, who made their Major League Baseball debut in 1998 as an expansion franchise, are the newest team in the league to have not yet won a World Series. Prior to becoming known as the Rays in 2008, they struggled as a team that was once known as the Devil Rays, averaging 97 loses each season during their first several seasons in the league. Since then, the Rays have won two American League pennants, in 2008 and 2020, before falling in the World Series to the Phillies and Dodgers, respectively.

Tropicana Field is also the poorest stadium in the Major League Baseball and fails to draw spectators, thus the franchise might greatly benefit from a World Series victory to improve its image and reputation.

Milwaukee Brewers

As the Seattle Pilots, the team existed for for one season before relocating to Milwaukee and becoming known as the Brewers. A World Series appearance followed by an AL Championship was the franchise’s only appearance in the postseason, when they were defeated by the Cardinals in seven games despite taking a 3-2 lead in the series. That is the closest the Brewers have ever been to earning a World Series championship. The Milwaukee Brewers advanced to the National League Championship Series in 2018, but were defeated by the World Series champion Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series in 2021.

San Diego Padres

It was created in 1969 and has won two National League pennants, but they have failed to win the World Series in any of their previous appearances. Despite facing two great teams in the Detroit Tigers of 1984 and the New York Yankees of 1998, they were unable to win a single game in either series, falling short by a single run. San Diego lost its National Football League club in 2016, and it continues to be the largest city in the United States without having won a major league sports title. The Padres are the only club remaining that has a chance to make a difference.

Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners are ranked at the bottom of the list since they are the only club to have never participated in, let alone won, a World Series. After joining the Major League Baseball as an expansion team in 1977, the Mariners enjoyed a period of dominance in the 1990s and early 2000s, reaching the American League Championship Game three times. It’s a pity that T-Mobile Park, one of the greatest ballparks in the Major League Baseball, has only hosted a few of postseason games. The community is also more likely to support the Seahawks and even the Sounders, but the Mariners will always be remembered for their 116-win season in Major League Baseball in 2001.

You can know that if the Seattle Mariners ever make it to the World Series, every neutral fan on the planet will be rooting for them to triumph.

After making it to the World Series only once before in team history, the Tampa Bay Rays have made it to the World Series twice more. As a result of their 4-2 triumph in Game 7 against the Houston Astros to win the American League pennant and the 2020 American League championship, the Tampa Bay Rays have a chance to become the second straight team to win its first World Series championship. They’ll be looking to follow in the footsteps of the Washington Nationals, who defeated the Houston Astros in the World Series last year to claim the lone championship in the history of the Nationals/Montreal Expos.

Check out how long each of those six teams has gone without claiming the championship ring in their respective sports.

Tampa Bay Rays (23 years)

The Rays improved from last place to first place in 2008 under manager Joe Maddon. They had the greatest winning percentage (.599) in the franchise’s history with a 97-65 record up until this year’s club went 40-20. (.667). Their division series victory over the Chicago White Sox was followed by a dramatic ALCS victory over the Boston Red Sox, with rookie David Price earning the save in Game 7 of the series. The Rays, on the other hand, were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, which took place over five games.

Colorado Rockies (28 years)

The Colorado Rockies made the playoffs in 1995, only their third season in existence, and didn’t make it again for another 12 seasons after that. The Mile High City, on the other hand, had a truly wonderful year in 2007. The Colorado Rockies, who had appeared to be out of the postseason picture, won 13 of their final 14 regular-season games to force a one-game wild-card playoff against the San Diego Padres. When San Diego scored twice in the top of the 13th inning to send the game into extra innings, it appeared that the game was over.

Colorado’s incredible hot run continued with series victories over the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks in the postseason, before they were swept by the Boston Red Sox in the World Series in 2007.

Seattle Mariners (44 years)

The Mariners have the longest playoff drought of any Major League Baseball team, with 19 years and counting to their credit. All four of their postseason appearances were over a seven-year stretch from 1995 to 2001, all under the direction of manager Lou Piniella. However, while Ken Griffey Jr. ignited the Mariners’ dynasty in 1995, the finest Mariners team was the one that won 116 games in 2001 despite the absence of Griffey, Randy Johnson, and Alex Rodriguez from the team.

However, the Mariners, led by league MVP Ichiro Suzuki, RBI champion Bret Boone, and future Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez, ran into a buzzsaw in the American League Championship Series, falling in five games to the New York Yankees.

Milwaukee Brewers (52 years)

A year after being renamed the Pilots during their first season in the league as an expansion team in Seattle in 1969, the organization relocated to Milwaukee the following season and became known as the Brewers. It was in 1982 that the Harvey’s Wallbangers — named for manager Harvey Kuenn and his band of sluggers — made it to the World Series for the first time. They won the American League East title on the final day of the regular season and defeated the California Angels in the American League Championship Series in five games.

The Milwaukee Brewers, on the other hand, came up against the St.

The Cardinals won the World Series in seven games, with former Brewers catcher Darrell Porter earning MVP honors.

San Diego Padres (52 years)

The Padres were also a part of the expansion team in 1969. (along with the Brewers, Expos and Kansas City Royals). Their history includes a pair of pennants, the first in 1984 under skipper Dick Williams, which featured Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, and the second in 1998 under manager Bruce Bochy and star pitcher Kevin Brown, both of whom are still alive today. In 1984, the San Diego Padres never truly threatened the powerful Detroit Tigers, but they did win Game 2 behind lefty Andy Hawkins’ pitching.

Texas Rangers (60 years)

  • As the expansion Washington Senators in 1961, the team relocated to Arlington, Texas in 1972 and ultimately qualified for the post-season for the first time in 1996, when they were a member of the Western Conference. With back-to-back World Series appearances under manager Ron Washington in 2010 and 2011, the team’s eight playoff outings were highlighted by the team’s best finish to date. The Rangers, on the other hand, came up short on both occasions. When they played the San Francisco Giants in 2010, they were defeated in five games. It was one strike away from winning the World Series in both the ninth and tenth innings of Game 6 the next year, but they were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals, who went on to defeat them in seven games overall the following year. List of World Series champions – Wikipedia

This article is about the victors of the World Series of Major League Baseball, which began in 1903 and has been going on ever since. See the list of pre-World Series baseball champions for information on prior league and inter-league victories. It took eight games for the Boston Americans (front row) to overcome the Pittsburgh Pirates (back row) in the inaugural World Series, which took place in 1903. It is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB), and it marks the conclusion of the Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason.

The current World Series, sometimes known as the “Fall Classic,” has been played every year since 1903 with the exception of two years: in 1904, when the NL championNew York Giants declined to play the AL championBoston Americans; and in 1994, when the series was canceled due to a players’ strike.

  1. Despite the fact that the vast majority of competitions have been played fully during the month of October, a minor number of Series have had games played during the months of September and November as well.
  2. Players, coaches, and others involved with the team are often presented with World Series rings to remember their triumph; however, other things such as pocket watches and medallions have been presented in the past.
  3. Through 2021, a total of 117 World Series will be contested, with the American League champion winning 66 and the National League champion winning 51.
  4. The Dodgers of the National League have the most losses with 14, while the Yankees of the American League have the most losses with 13.
  5. Louis Cardinals have won 11 titles, the most among National League clubs and the second-most all-time behind the New York Yankees, and have made a total of 19 postseason appearances, the third-highest total among National League clubs.

TheSeattle Marinersare the only current Major League Baseball franchise that has never participated in a World Series; theSan Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Milwaukee Brewershave all competed in the Series but have never won it; and theSan Francisco Giantshave competed in the Series but have never won it.

After winning the World Series in 1992 and 1993, the Toronto Blue Jays are the only organization from outside the United States to have appeared and won a World Series.

It is the only franchise to have represented both the National League (2005) and the American League (2017, 2019, 2021), with the Astros taking home the World Series in 2017. The Atlanta Braves are the reigning World Series winners for the year 2021.

Which teams have never won the World Series?

The month of October is here, and before the end of the month, one baseball club will be declared World Series winners. It was the first time in the franchise’s history that the Houston Astros won the World Series last year. With the triumph, Houston was able to remove their name from the list of Major League Baseball clubs who have yet to win a World Series championship. So, how many teams in Major League Baseball have yet to win the Fall Classic? There are seven clubs, including the Colorado Rockies and the Milwaukee Brewers, that have never won a World Series championship.

  • The Rockies were eliminated from the postseason after losing Game 163 to the Dodgers in the NL West, but they overcame the Cubs in the NL Wild Card game to keep their playoff hopes alive.
  • The Milwaukee Brewers advanced to the 1982 World Series, where they were defeated by the St.
  • Milwaukee is making its first postseason appearance since 2011, and it is the team’s sixth overall.
  • Colorado returned to the postseason for the first time since 2009, but was defeated by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Wild Card game last year.
  • Once, in 2007, they advanced to the World Series, where they were swept by the resurgent Boston Red Sox in four games.
  • The Padres have made five appearances in the postseason since their debut in 1969.
  • The Seattle Mariners have never won a pennant or advanced to the World Series in their 42 seasons in the major leagues.
  • The Yankees beat the Mariners in five games before going on to win the American League Division Series and the World Series.
  • The Rays won the American League East and advanced to the 2008 World Series, where they were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies in five games.
  • Rangers of Texas: The Rangers made back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011, after only making eight postseason appearances during 58 seasons.
  • The Nationals relocated to Washington in 2005 after 36 years as the Montreal Expos.

They were previously known as the Montreal Expos. While the Astros only made it to the postseason once, in 1981, the Nationals made it to the National League Division Series four times between 2012 and 2017, but never moved past the first round.

Which MLB Teams Have Never Won a World Series?

As Major League Baseball’s 2020 season comes to a close, after what has been an uncharacteristically unpredictable campaign, the Tampa Bay Rays and their modest payroll hope to win their first World Series by defeating the wealthy Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rays, who are making their second trip in the World Series, are one of just six clubs who have never won the Fall Classic in their history. With the possibility of Tampa Bay reducing that list to five clubs, we thought it would be interesting to take a brief look at the teams that have yet to win a World Series championship.

Baseball’s saddest record finally belongs to its most deserving team

Current Major League Baseball clubs that have never won the World Series is relatively short: the Washington Nationals (ed. note: as of Oct. 30, 2019, this is no longer the case). The fact that I’m required to provide this editing comment is, to put it mildly, ludicrous. Please refrain from sending me emails claiming that this article is incorrect, as if I should have been able to forecast the future), the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, Seattle Mariners, and Texas Rangers have never won a World Series championship.

  • There is, however, a more depressing list, and it has now been reduced to just one name.
  • The Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, and Texas Rangers have all made it to the World Series (and lost).
  • The fact that Seattle and Seattle alone should hold the record for the most deep modern-day futility is well known to everyone who has been a long-time baseball fan.
  • Despite the fact that Washington’s penchant for choking at the divisional level was noteworthy, it paled in comparison to the Mariners’ unique brand of incompetence.

Many congratulations to the Washington Nationals on their presence in the World Series, and thank you for relegating my beloved team to its proper spot in the standings: last place.

MLB teams that haven’t won a World Series title

In total, there have been over 110 World Series, with 24 of the 30 active Major League Baseball teams being able to boast of having won at least one World Series victory. Despite this, there are still certain teams who have yet to get a permanent grip on the Commissioner’s Trophy in their own hands. Not every Major League Baseball team has the potential to win the World Series. A great deal of consistency is required in order to compete for such a lengthy period of time, but you must also stay fit and, why not, have luck on your side more often than not as well.

As we’ve seen previously, a strong final stretch may propel an underdog all the way to the championship stage.

In addition, the day will come for those unluckysixMLBteams that have yet to win their first World Series championship, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated on their progress.

Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays have been slowly but steadily making their way back into contention, and despite their ups and downs and the absence of a strong audience, they were able to win the American League pennant in 2008 despite their struggles. Unfortunately, they were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, 4-1. In fact, there has been some discussion about maybe moving the Rays to a larger market in order for the team to finally take a stride forward toward contending, but that is a topic for another day.

Colorado Rockies

Although they have had their ups and downs and have lacked a dedicated fan following, the Tampa Bay Rays have managed to win the American League pennant in 2008 in spite of their ups and downs and lack of support. In the World Series against the Phillies, they were defeated 4-1. Indeed, there has been some consideration of relocatingthe Raysto an even greater metropolitan area so that they can make a genuine push at contending, but that is a topic for another day.

Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners have had some of the finest players in baseball history break out with their team during the course of their history. Everybody from Ken Griffey Jr. to Lex Rodriguez to Randy Johnson to Ichiro Suzuki to Edgar Martnez to Félix Hernández has gotten their fill of trophies and accolades. Although they have never reached the World Series, they are now experiencing a 17-year playoff drought, which is the longest in all of Major League Baseball and the longest in the league’s history.

Texas Rangers

Over the past decade, the Texas Rangers have been dangerously close to winning the World Series, but they’ve never been able to complete the comeback when it counted the most. They’ve established themselves as consistent competitors for a postseason spot, but they consistently fail in difficult situations.

After making it to the World Series in 2010 and 2011, the Rangers were defeated by the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, respectively, in the last two games of each season. In all likelihood, they’ll be back in time for the Fall Classic in no time.

Milwaukee Brewers

Among the teams on this list, the Milwaukee Brewers have the finest tradition and culture, and they are possibly the most well-known. They have a loyal and devoted fan base, and they have been in the league long enough to have a shot at – at the very least – a World Series championship, but that hasn’t happened yet. When the Milwaukee Brewers played their longstanding rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, in the 1982 World Series, they came within one game of capturing the championship. They came close to making a comeback in 2018, but the Dodgers defeated them in the National League Championship Series in seven games.

San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres play in the smallest market in California, which has proven to be rather difficult to overcome given the team’s lack of postseason success and the fact that the franchise has battled throughout its entire existence. They did make it to two World Series, in 1984 and 1998, but both times they had to contend with highly overpowering opponents, the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees, who combined for 114 wins in their respective seasons. You’re out of luck.

Mapping World Series Winners and Losers – BatchGeo Blog

When it comes to market size in California, the San Diego Padres have the smallest market, which has proven to be extremely difficult to overcome given their lack of postseason success and how much the team has suffered throughout their history. While they did make it to the World Series twice, in 1984 and 1998, they did so against tremendously overpowering opponents, the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees, who each won 114 games in a row. Unlucky you.

Most World Series Wins

Even the most casual baseball fans are aware that the New York Yankees are the best club in the Major League Baseball (MLB) based on their previous success. In total, the team has won 27 titles and has competed in the Fall Classic a record 40 times. The Yankees are in a league of their own in this regard, having won eight more games than the next closest club in terms of appearances.

World Series Top 10

Team Wins Appearances
New York Yankees 27 40
St. Louis Cardinals 11 19
Boston Red Sox 7 11
New York Giants 5 14
Cincinnati Reds 5 9
Los Angeles Dodgers 5 9
Philadelphia Athletics 5 8
Pittsburgh Pirates 5 7
Detroit Tigers 4 11
Oakland Athletics 4 6

At a period when they were required to have the best record in the whole National League in order to win the opportunity to play against the top club in the American League, the St. Louis Cardinals routinely had competitive teams throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Now, in the age of divisions and wild cards, there are a total of ten teams competing for a spot in the World Series each year. The Red Sox are ranked third on the list, which is an impressive accomplishment considering the long gap that existed between 1918 and 2004.

According to their previous monicker, the Boston Americans, the Red Sox may claim one additional victory this season.

Of course, if we include the names of other existing clubs, the Giants and the Red Sox would tie for third position with each other. In contrast to the New York Giants baseball club, which won five championships in its history, the San Francisco Giants have won three more titles in recent years.

Highest Winning Percentage

Having been to the World Series 40 times (or even 19, 14, or 11 times), it becomes much simpler to pile up the victories in the postseason. There are a few number of teams that have won the Fall Classic on every occasion they have participated.

Team Wins Appearances
Toronto Blue Jays 2 2
Miami Marlins 2 2
Boston Americans 1 1
Arizona Diamondbacks 1 1
Anaheim Angels 1 1

Despite the fact that none of these teams has won more than two World Series, they have each won every game in which they have competed. In fact, the Blue Jays accomplished this feat in consecutive seasons in 1992 and 1993. The more the number of appearances a team makes, the more difficult it becomes to sustain a high winning rate. Six teams have made at least five appearances and have maintained a better than 50/50 record. These are the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, San Francisco Giants (twice), Cincinnati Reds (twice), Los Angeles Dodgers (twice).

American League vs National League

As of this year, the league that wins the All-Star Game is awarded the right to host its respective World Series. With the exception of the designated hitter rule, there isn’t much of a difference between the two teams otherwise. The American League, on the other hand, has been significantly more successful than the National League. The American League has 64 victories to the National League’s 48. As one might expect, the Yankees’ several titles account for a significant portion of the disparity.

MLB Teams Without a World Series Win

While everyone is talking about how great baseball is, it’s easy to forget that certain clubs have never won a World Series.

  • The Texas Rangers (who appeared in 2010 and 2011), the San Diego Padres (1984 and 1998), the Tampa Bay Rays (2008), the Colorado Rockies (2007), the Milwaukee Brewers (1982), the Houston Astros (2005), the Washington Nationals (who never appeared), and the Seattle Mariners (who never appeared) are the teams that have made appearances in Major League Baseball.

For those who are not baseball fans, or who feel that your team has no chance this year, try supporting for one of these underdogs. For those who prefer basketball, have a look at these NBA Finals Winners and Losers on a Map, which were created by a fan.

Prior to it, the 1998 New York Yankees won 114 games and the World Series, capturing the championship. The Mets, who won 108 games in 1986, were the last National League club to win 100 or more games in a season and then win the World Series in the same season.
