Andrew McCutchen understands what it takes to succeed. After growing up in the little hamlet of Fort Meade, Florida, he went on to play on dusty fields in the major leagues, roaming the outfields of the game’s most storied stadiums. Cutch’s journey was not one that could be hurried. He was never in possession of the most up-to-date equipment or the most advanced facilities. His only possession was a desire to explore how far he could push himself and the game he so much loved. McCutchen is considered one of baseball’s all-time greats with five All-Star appearances, four Silver Slugger awards, and one National League MVP trophy.
1. Become a Master of Hand-Eye Coordination
In the batter’s box, hand-eye coordination is a critical component in achieving success. McCutchen, who has a lifetime batting average of.289, began perfecting this technique at a young age. Cutch’s father, Lorenzo McCutchen, devised a practice that pushed the youngster to concentrate solely on hitting the ball with the bat. “Back in the day, my father used to collect broomsticks and chunks of cork—fishing cork or whatever it was. When he finished, he’d wrap the cork in tape to make it heavy enough that the wind wouldn’t blow it about too much.
‘I used to do it a lot; it was something I used to do on a regular basis,’ McCutchen recalls.

4. Injuries Are Temporary
By the time he was a sophomore at Fort Meade High School, McCutchen had already demonstrated considerable physical ability. Nevertheless, when he tore his ACL while doing a jet sweep during a football game, his promising future was abruptly called into question. McCutchen, on the other hand, addressed his rehabilitation in a professional manner, aiming to return better than before. “Going through that circumstance as a young child, as a sophomore, was a difficult, difficult experience for me.” I definitely went through some difficult times, but I managed to get through them.

7. Train Smart
During the early stages of his Major League Baseball career, McCutchen spent his offseasons working out by himself. Nevertheless, after a few years of doing so, he understood that partnering with a qualified trainer would allow him to get even more out of his training. He now spends his offseasons at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he trains under the supervision of strength and conditioning specialist Will Townsley, who is a former NFL player. What has changed about my training is that I am now working with a trainer.
Previously, I did not have access to a trainer.
