When Does Baseball Season End 2021

When does 2021 MLB season start & end? Schedule, dates & playoffs

Beginning on Thursday, April 1, 2021, the Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season will kick off for the first time since 1968, with every MLB club playing its first game on that same day for the first time since 1968. The New York Yankees are scheduled to host the Toronto Blue Jays at 1:05 p.m. ET in the season’s first game, while the defending World Series winners, the Los Angeles Dodgers, are scheduled to visit the Colorado Rockies at 4:10 p.m. ET. The regular season of Major League Baseball in 2021 is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, October 3.

When is the 2021 MLB All-Star Game?

The All-Star Game in Atlanta, Georgia, is set to take place on July 13, 2021, at Truist Park, which serves as the Braves’ home ballpark. The 2020 All-Star Game was originally scheduled to take place in Atlanta, however the game was postponed because to the outbreak of covid (19). The All-Star Game was originally scheduled to take place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles this year, but the location has been changed to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Dodger Stadium in 2022.

2021 MLB postseason: schedule TBC

The schedule for the Major League Baseball postseason in 2021 has not yet been announced. This is due to the fact that Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players’ Association have been unable to reach an agreement on whether or not to preserve the expanded, 16-team playoffs that were introduced in the 2020 season. Prior to the 2017 season, a total of ten clubs qualified for the Major League Baseball postseason.

Plenty left to decide on ‘final’ day of season

It is not exactly a novel concept to suggest that Mondays are the worst day of the week. Some years ago, a rotund, lasagna-loving cat wrote extensively on the subject, and the cult classic “Office Space” coined the phrase “Somebody’s got a case of the Mondays” to further emphasize the idea that the beginning of the work week is a drag. The Monday following the conclusion of the 162-game regular season, on the other hand, is unquestionably the worst Monday of the year for baseball fans. The players are either cleaning out their lockers or scouting their opponents for the upcoming month of October on this day.

  • And that is a disappointment for all of us.
  • It is the final day of the regular season in the year 2021.
  • It’s mathematically possible to move that tape across the finish line, and the possibility – perhaps even probability?
  • At 3 p.m.
  • There are numerous storylines that will be resolved by the end of the season in 2021, but the three most important ones are the American League Wild Card race, the National League West race, and the home run crown.
  • To guarantee themselves a position in the American League Wild Card Game, the Yankees and Red Sox must win their respective games today.
  • If one of them loses and either the Blue Jays or the Mariners win, things get a little more complicated for everyone.

The Red Sox will start Chris Sale against the Nationals’ Joan Adon in the first game of the series.

Tyler Anderson of the Mariners will face Reid Detmers of the Angels in the first game of the series.

There is a good chance that the field for next year’s postseason tournament will be expanded.

We’ve been hoping for tiebreaker turmoil since the dual-Wild Card system was created in 2012, and all we’ve had to show for it is a tiebreaker between the Rays and the Rangers to determine the second American League wild card position in 2013.

We’re in desperate need of some Sunday sizzle.

All that stands between two longstanding rivals who have the greatest records in the Major League Baseball is a single run in the ninth inning.

– The Giants have now equaled their club victories record, which was achieved during the administration of President Teddy Roosevelt.

However, even though the Dodgers have gone an incredible 43-13 since acquiring Max Scherzer and Trea Turner before of the Trade Deadline (which is just eight fewer victories than the D-backs have amassed during the season), they have only gained two games on the D-backs in that period.

San Francisco would host Game 163 since they have won the season series versus Los Angeles.

The losing team would host the Cardinals in the National League Wild Card Game on Wednesday.

Buehler, who went seven shutout innings against the Padres in his last appearance after looking unexpectedly wobbly in his previous two, will start opposite Anderson.

On Saturday, he withdrew his ace and NL Cy Young Award candidate Corbin Burnes after two innings to prepare him for the postseason, and he did the same thing on Friday and Saturday to rest his finest relievers, as well as his top starters.

For the Giants, the strategy is simple: Put the ball in the hands of Logan Webb and see if the young right-hander, who has been outstanding all season and particularly effective in the second half, can lead you to victory.

Perhaps wishing for a third tiebreaker between the Dodgers and Giants in the history of these two famous clubs is not feasible.

Incomparably different from any other home run race A home run race like the one we’re about to witness in 2021 has never been witnessed before, and we can’t wait to watch how it all plays out.

To retake the Major League lead over Salvador Perez (48 home runs), Shohei Ohtani, who starts the day with 45 home runs, would have to go utterly insane, which is a difficult ask for anyone, let alone a Japanese player.

Ohtani’s final standing ovation is in order.

He’s already surpassed Johnny Bench’s single-season home run total for a main catcher, which he set in 1989.

In addition, if Perez hits a home run today, he will become the sole holder of the Royals’ single-season home run record.

His home games, including Sunday’s finale against the Twins, are also played in Kauffman Stadium, which has a power-suppressing system in place.

Perez will have to keep his cool against Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

It is not just Guerrero’s Blue Jays that are battling for their postseason survival, but he is also attempting to put the finishing touches on his MVP case against Shohei Ohtani.

Guerrero might not have the same pitching profile as Ohtani, but he has put up a.305/.374/.576 slash line with eight home runs and eight doubles in the last month of the regular season.

What are the MLB rules, schedule and start date for 2021 season?

Nationals Following a refusal by the players union to negotiate a delayed start, Major League Baseballannounced that it would direct clubs to report for spring training on schedule and plan for a full 162-game season when the calendar changed to February. The MLB season in 2021 will be the league’s second effort to compete while dealing with the coronavirus outbreak. After many rule modifications were implemented and just 60 regular-season games were played last summer, this season will be much more in line with what fans are used to seeing.

  • Here’s everything you need to know about the Major League Baseball season in 2021, including the regulations and schedule.
  • It is scheduled that the first spring training games will take place on Saturday, February 27.
  • The regular-season schedule of Major League Baseball will begin on Thursday, April 1.
  • Following the cancellation of the All-Star Game last year, Major League Baseball will host the annual event on July 13 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
  • If all goes according to plan, the World Series will begin on Tuesday, October 26, with a potential Game 7 scheduled for November 3.
  • According to reports, Major League Baseball and the players’ union have struck an agreement on health and safety measures for the 2021 season.
  • In addition to a five-man taxi squad for home games and up to 28 players at either their alternate training facilities or Triple-A affiliate, active rosters will return to their customary size of 26 players.
  • Contact tracing devices will be required to be worn at all times by all players, coaches, and other critical workers, following the lead of the National Football League and National Basketball Association.
  • Despite the fact that fans were not allowed inside stadiums last year, it is predicted that they will be permitted to attend games in a limited capacity this year, depending on local limitations in each specific market.
  • What does this mean for the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and how will it be implemented?
  • According to reports, there is little confidence between the two parties, with neither the league nor the MLB Players Association ready to concede anything at the negotiation table.

If and when a new collective bargaining agreement is struck, rule modifications like as the universal designated hitter and expanded playoffs will be placed in place permanently.

21 dates to remember for the 2021 MLB season

  • Beginning on April 1, all 30 clubs will compete in a conventional Opening Day that will feature ten divisional contests. The Yankees-Blue Jays game, the Phillies-Braves game, the Nationals-Mets game, and the Athletics-Astros game are among the highlights. April 2nd marks 20 years since Albert Pujols made his major league debut. The future Hall of Famer made his major-league debut at the age of 21 and went on to earn the Rookie of the Year title with the St. Louis Cardinals, batting.329 with 37 home runs and 130 RBI in his rookie season. Having signed a 10-year contract with the Angels following the 2011 season, Pujols is entering his last year of the pact. It won’t be quite the same without a full crowd at Dodger Stadium, but the organization will lift their 2020 World Series banner before to the game against the Nationals on April 9. April 9–Dodgers home opening A.J. Hinch will return to Houston on April 12th: The Tigers’ new skipper returns to Minute Maid Park less than two weeks into the new season after only being out of work for a year as a result of his involvement in the Astros’ cheating incident. Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated on April 15th, with everyone in the major leagues donning the number 42 in honor of the Dodgers great who broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947. Robinson’s jersey number was retired by the whole league in 1997. MLB’s $1 BILLION QUINTET: Breaking down the league’s legendary free agency shortstop class PROTOCOLS HAVE BEEN UPDATED: Major League Baseball is taking it easy. Protocols for COVID-19 players and personnel who have been properly immunized The Astros will play at Yankee Stadium on May 4th: A three-game series between the Yankees and Astros is planned to take place in the Bronx on Wednesday, April 3rd. This will be the first regular-season encounter between these two teams since the 2019 American League Championship Series – before the Astros’ cheating controversy came to light. Given the language used by Yankees players last season, emotions should be high this season. Willie Mays celebrates his 90th birthday on May 6th: The Hall of Famer was a 22-time All-Star who blasted 660 home runs in 22 seasons with the Giants and Mets, making him one of baseball’s all-time greats. Bartolo Colon’s home run on May 7th marked the five-year anniversary of the event. When the then 42-year-old pitcher smashed a two-run home run off James Shields in San Diego on this day in 2016, it marked the beginning of his major league career. On that particular night, Mets announcer Gary Cohen declared, “The unthinkable has happened!” June 2nd is Lou Gehrig Day, in which Major League Baseball commemorates the Yankees legacy while also raising awareness about Lou Gehrig’s condition, which is colloquially known as Gehrig’s disease. A distinctive patch will be worn on the uniforms of the players and coaches. It will be the third baseman’s first time playing as a visitor at Coors Field on July 1 when he and the Cardinals begin a four-game series against the Rockies on the first of July. Before being transferred to the Cardinals, Arenado spent eight seasons with the Colorado Rockies, where he batted.322 with a.985 on-base percentage and eight Gold Gloves. The MLB draft begins on July 11th: The 2021 draft, which will be held in Atlanta in conjunction with All-Star week, is likely to have between 20 and 30 rounds, compared to the five-round format of the 2020 draft. For the first time since 2011, the Pittsburgh Pirates have been selected with the first overall pick. July 12–Home Run Derby: Baseball’s finest sluggers compete under the lights at Truist Park on the eve of the All-Star Game. The 2019 Home Run Derby was won by Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who became the sixth right-handed batter to win the title in seven years. The 91st Major League Baseball season begins on July 13th. After the 2020 All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium was postponed, the Atlanta Braves’ home field will host the midsummer classic in their honor. It is currently on a seven-game winning run and has a 45-43-2 edge in the all-time series against the National League. The Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on July 25th. Despite the fact that no one was elected this year, the 2020 class – which includes Derek Jeter, Larry Walker, Marvin Miller, and Ted Simmons – will be recognized after the pandemic caused the cancellation of the ceremony last summer. The Hall of Fame has announced that the ceremony would not be held in its customary, heavily attended format, but will instead be broadcast on television. July 31–Trade deadline: With a number of prominent players set to become free agents following the 2021 season, it is possible that more stars may be traded than normal. Mike Trout celebrates his 30th birthday on August 7th: The Angels’ three-time MVP, who is entering his 11th(!) season, is already being spoken about as one of the best players in the history of the game. Trout, who is under contract through 2030, became only the 16th player in MLB history to hit 300 home runs before turning 30. We can’t wait to see what the next decade has in store for him. August 12–Field of Dreams game: The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox square off in Dyersville, Iowa, in a temporary ballpark near to the location of the 1989 film Field of Dreams. The event was postponed from the previous year, and the ballpark had a capacity of 8,000 spectators at the time. Little League Classic: On August 22, the Indians and Angels will square off at Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, as part of the Little League World Series, which has been an annual fixture since 2017. Prior to this year’s game, the stands were jam-packed with Little League players and their parents. Adam Wainwright celebrates his 40th birthday on August 30th: After experiencing a rebirth over the previous two seasons, Wainwright returned to St. Louis on a one-year agreement to compete for another World Series championship. He was the Cardinals’ closer as a rookie during the team’s 2006 World Series run, but he was sidelined for the team’s 2011 World Series run after undergoing Tommy John surgery. September 11th: The Mets host the Yankees on the 20th anniversary of September 11th: It will be the first time the two New York clubs will clash on September 11, and you can anticipate some poignant tributes to be held at Citi Field in honor of the victims of September 11. The final day of the regular season is on October 3rd. The 2021 season comes to a close on a Sunday, and it wouldn’t be unexpected if numerous postseason positions were up for grabs at the end of the regular season.

Five Things to Know From MLB in 2021

What could be a more appropriate moment for introspection than the conclusion of the calendar year? It’s simple: the end of the year in a game that has been disabled. Here are five things we learnt during the Major League Baseball season of 2021: Those three times in the same game that Max Scherzer was tested for sticky substances will come back to mind. The crackdown was first disruptive, but it quickly became normal, and it made a difference. Eric Hartline/USA TODAY Sports & Entertainment

1. Sticky-stuff enforcement had real—but not overwhelming—effects.

Didn’t it seem like this one was going to be the story of the season at one point? The crackdown on sticky material had the potential to turn into a massive, disruptive nightmare for three days, at the very least, but it didn’t. (Special thanks to Max Scherzer and Sergio Romo for their contributions to this project.) After then, everyone became accustomed to it. The umpires’ inspections on pitchers grew commonplace and faded into the background as the season progressed. However, even though the enforcement itself grew increasingly difficult to ignore, the impact on the game was quite real.

When the new criteria were revealed on June 15, league statistics began to alter, showing that pitchers instantly stopped using performance-enhancing chemicals, despite the fact that umpires would not begin doing their tests for a week.

BA OBP SLG
Before June 15 .238 .313 .398
After June 15 .248 .320 .419

That increase in league batting average was sufficient to bridge the gap between the “worst offense since the Year of the Pitcher” and the “particularly terrible but significantly less shockingly weak” offensive categories. (This is an extremely significant distinction!) Some of this may be ascribed to the crackdown; every summer, when the temperature heats up, the offense gets a lift, but the rise this year was a little more intense than it had been in previous years. And if you’re looking for even more compelling evidence of the impact, go no further.

After June 15, the spin rate across the whole MLB was the lowest it had been since 2016.

Average Spin Rate (rpm)
Before June 15 2,272
After June 15 2,209

In the end, sticky-stuff enforcement did not emerge as the season’s most compelling tale. By July, you could have completely forgotten that anything was going on. Regardless, it made a significant impact in the outcome of the game.

2. Did we hit the ceiling on three true outcomes?

It’s likely that you already have a good grasp of the debate around how seldom the ball is placed into play. Everywhere you go, from a glimpse at league statistics to the grousing on Sunday Night Baseball, it’s becoming virtually difficult to ignore. In that regard, the previous year was a continuation of the previous year. However, there was a new wrinkle to the conversation. As you might imagine, the three true outcomes percentage in Major League Baseball has been progressively increasing in recent years.

  • From 2015 through 2020, the number of people that participated in the event set a new record each season.
  • courtesy of FanGraphs The decline was marginal (36.1 percent to 35.1 percent), but the incidence of three true outcomes remained historically high (36.1 percent to 35.1 percent).
  • But it was still a decline, no matter what!
  • However, this does not provide us with any clear information on what those statistics will look like in 2022.
  • However, it does mark what might prove to be a significant turning point: Is it possible that MLB has reached a natural limit on this issue?

3. Base stealing is at its lowest level in decades—but it’s smarter than ever.

The latest development in a long-simmering dialogue is as follows. Fortunately, the rate of stolen bases has been slowly falling for some time now, and in 2021, it reached its lowest level in more than half a century. However, it coincided with an unusual milestone, which demonstrated exactly how sophisticated teams have become when it comes to base stealing. A common piece of conventional wisdom holds that attempting to steal a base is only worthwhile if the chances of succeeding are more than 75 percent.

And in 2021, MLB achieved that milestone for the first time, with SB percent reaching a record-high 76 percent for the first time.

Instead of appearing to be a disappearing art, base theft appears to be a science that is always evolving and improving. Bo Bichette, the Blue Jays’ shortstop, stole 25 bases and was caught only once (a 96 percent success rate) in the year 2021. Photograph by John E. Sokolowski for USA TODAY Sports

4. It took a lot of players to get through this year.A lot.

It was always going to be difficult to recover from a season that was cut short by the pandemic and jumbled, as was the case last year. There is no template for doing so, and as the repercussions of 2020 continued to echo through 2021, it was reasonable to assume that part of the solution would include bringing in additional players to manage workloads and accommodate injuries to the team. When you combine that with 26-man rosters and pre-existing tendencies of optimizing every available slot by moving players up and down the depth chart, it’s easy to see where this is headed.

One way to look at it is that the league will require 78 more pitchers in 2021 than it did in 2019, a difference higher than the year-over-year change between 1968 and 1969, when the league expanded to include four additional clubs.

5. This year was a glorious reminder not to take baseball for granted.

The arrival of players was, of course, only one tiny aspect of the season’s transition from the previous one in 2020. Major League Baseball was able to reclaim some of its essential duties in 2021 after a year of empty stadiums, phony soundtracks, and logistical difficulties. Baseball as community—as a physical and virtual meeting place, as a common reference point, and as a calendar—was restored to us this season, as was baseball as a calendar last season. Perhaps we shouldn’t have needed to be reminded in this instance.
